September 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only bikes that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Kawasaki W175 is doing decent numbers, contrary to the Motorinc roasting from Shumi.

Yamaha R3 doing justice to its price.

Staggering 6L units sold by Hero! I have never seen such numbers before.

Wouldn't call a 100 units decent for a locally manufactured commuter. It is basically a fancier CT125 if you take off the badge and nothing special. Lets assume it is a 'retro' like a Ronin or Hunter and compare the units sold. Ronin does 2500 and Hunter does 17000. Unless the standards are really low, the 100 units is an extremely underwhelming figure. Their own z900 sells 90 units for starters.

Shumi was well within his rights to criticise Kawa for their smaller capacity strategies. KLX230 is another example. I would like more reviewers to be honest and opinionated.

Kawasaki does not have the dealer presence of TVS or RE. I would consider the W175 as a niche offering rather than an outright commuter. Not sure how Kawasaki has positioned the W175.

100 odd units for a sub 200 CC motorcycle is abysmal. Shumi was basically pointing out everything wrong with the bike and the mentality of Kawasaki with respect to Indian market. If a manufacturer is ready to launch a product of this bare bones feature list and irrelevant strategy it is rightly to be pointed out so that end customers don't suffer.

Read the news that Activa has sold 50 lakh units in Karnataka. Thats a huge number for a single model.

There are many models in the Top 20 list, like the Hero HF Delux, TVS XL Moped, and Bajaj Platina, for which you hardly see any advertisements, yet they still feature regularly in the Top 20 list.

Okinawa sold 2397 units in September 2023, which dropped to just 1 unit in April 2024. Now, in September 2024, they are back up to 1004 units. Should we call it a true roller coaster ride?

Triumph 400 were steadily doing 2000 per month and suddenly steady doing 3000 month. Is it because of the 10k discount they introduced again for a few months ? Lovely to see it. Might see higher capacity bikes manufactured in India with Bajaj partnership if the success continues.

Something wrong with the sales data? Why is CB300R at 0 sales this month and the month before? Surely there should be some takers?

Of all the brands one can point their fingers at, Kawasaki would be the last brand i would point my fingers at and here are my reasons.
Kawasaki had launched the slightly premium 250cc parallel twin in India, the ninja 250r back in 2008. To give a reference yamaha launched their twin version in 2015.

Kawasaki has a line up of road legal bikes ranging from 175 to 1000cc. They have had their flagship on sale in India throughout its production life, the ninja H2 (Ducati, yamaha, honda, suzuki dont offer their flagship throughout their production life cycle for India, triumph is another exception). In the H2 series, you could still buy the fire breathing track only H2r if you fancy or can buy the road legal versions ZH2, H2 SE, H2 SE SX.

Z900 is the most affordable inline 4 you could buy.

Only manufacturer to still offer a 600cc inline 4 in India.
Zx10r is the most affordable inline 4 1000cc supersport you could buy.
Only manufacturer in the world to offer a 400cc inline 4 that has a screaming red line of 16,000, no one asked for it but Kawasaki made it and has 2 models on sale in India 4r and 4rr.

They have 2 range of dirt bikes officially on sale from 65 to 450cc there isnt any other brand who have a dirt bike line up like kawasaki for India.

They are the only manufacturer to offer a dual sport in India, klx 230.

So this begs the question, what exactly is Kawasaki thinking of India? Or should i say, what few Indians think Kawasaki is thinking of India?

I didn’t watch motorinc’s video past “Kawasaki thinks India as a fifth world country”. I would question motoinc as to why they havent made a single video above 450cc bikes. Does motorinc think India as a fifth world country? Or manufacturers just dont give them anything bigger than say 300cc.

Coming to the w175 its a niche offering its not for 1 bike garage even though it could be for the right buyer. I am sure the target audience is someone who owns a Kawasaki product/s or has owned in the past and wants a simple yet niche product to putter around on weekends without attracting a lot of eye balls.

Apologies for the rant, but i strongly believe choose fights worth fighting for. To the right buyer, there is nothing wrong with the w175 or its pricing. Kawasaki has such a strong line up, If you have the money you could enter a showroom with an intention of buying a w and walk out booking an h2.

Re: September 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

Why is BMW motorrad sales figure missing from these stats? Last month JSP showroom alone may have sold 25 numbers of R1300gs. In big motorcycles i think they should be selling lot more than Kawasaki and Triumph.
