Re: BSA Gold Star 650 Review

Couple of updates:

1. Met the BSA team for a sit down interview and received a goodie bag by BSA after few days commemorating launch of BSA Gold star 650 in India

2. Had a pleasure of riding my bike on the NICE road stretch a few days ago, was able to cover the whole stretch within no time, end-to-end (Don't want to mention speed achieved to maintain t-bhp guidelines). Could reach 7k rpm easily, but had to crouch to escape headwind. Vibrations were literally non-existent and the brakes functioned extrordinarilly well. Planning to join team-bhp bike rides sooner

Re: BSA Gold Star 650 Review

I recently purchased a BSA Goldstar 650 Shadow Black on Dec 5. The day after my purchase, the bike started experiencing stalling issues at low RPM and engine cut-off.

I wanted to wait until the first service to see if this resolved itself. I have clocked 600km until now, and after a week of my purchase, I noticed oil leaks from the engine head of my bike. I took it to the service center, and they agreed that the oil leak was abnormal for a new bike and that the gasket needed to be changed. Also, a valve is loose, and it needs to be replaced as well.

I am shocked that a new bike can have these issues. Even though the reviews were poor for the after-sales service, I went ahead with the bike because I was really impressed with its performance.

If this happened after a few months of usage, I would be able to accept it, but on a new bike, this is unacceptable. Please let me know if anyone else has faced these issues. Should I ask for a replacement or get it serviced? I don't want to get it serviced as I am worried this might continue in the long run.

Replacement will NEVER happen, perhaps, they may replace the cylinder piston kit or maybe even the engine, but certainly not the motorcycle. Quite common on any new motorcycle launches {not the oil leak specifically, but niggling issues}, like my CBR having engine seizure or early batches of Interceptor having wheel wobbling, faulty rectifier etc.

Pls wait to see what Mahindra ASC got to say by giving them some time. If nothing works, Mr. Anand Mahindra is active on Twitter.

They are waiting for their Chief Mechanic to take a look at it. They asked me to take my bike and use it in the mean time as it will take time.

There is always a risk of niggles with buying a new launch bike. I am part of a group where one person had similar oil leak from gaskets which was fixed by the SVC.

Do make some noise there and ask them to fix it right away - it should not be acceptable to wait for such an issue to be fixed.

I understand that. But I didn't expect to face a series of issues after a week of riding the bike.

1. From the first day of delivery, the bike's power seems to be capped. It did not feel how it felt when I test-rode the bike. I attributed it to the bike being new and waited to check if it improved after the first service.

Turns out, even the service center agreed the bike's engine performance was not up to the mark. But they needed to look into it more. The initial prognosis was one of the valves in the engine was loose and needs to be replaced as well.

2. After riding consecutively for 5-10 mins above 3000 rpm, the bike makes a pleating noise which I attributed to the newness as well.

3. The engine oil started to leak when I did a 200km stretch on the 5th day.

The ASC agrees that the gasket needs to be replaced.

I again spoke with the ASC where they are still waiting for the Chief Mechanic to come (the same excuse) and also for the parts.

If it were RE, they would have these parts readily available which makes me wonder how long will it take if something goes wrong.

Since this is a new bike which has 2-3 issues in the engine, I am not comfortable so I asked them if they could replace the engine for me. But until now I have to call them every time and no one even called me.

Also, I haven't registered the bike yet. They gave delivery without registration as I was awaiting for special number and they were happy to give it as soon as possible.

The Sales Executive called me and asked me about the registration. When I told him, the bike is still in ASC and I have not received it back, he said he was not aware and check with them and call me back.

Did the person who faced a similar issue, faced delay in replacement as well? Since I have multiple issues, I am unable to attribute it to the new launch and let it go. Having experienced the service experience first hand, I feel it is safer to replace the engine so as not to be sorry later.

Oh Man!! Very disheartening and frustrating at the same time. Kudos to you for being patient till now

I know you must have tried everything possible, but just keep the customer care and the social media pages handled by them, busy very busy. Keep posting every alternate day, trouble them.

Also the only positive as of now is that they are accepting that the bike is not ok. I have read a lot of horror stories about Honda, RE's straight away denying owners complaints about the bike.

As far as I remember the oil leak fix was done in 1 or 2 days. Oil leak and gasket change is not a very big issue/fix either. I had had this issue on my D390 and that was fixed in one day (not when new but some years later).

Clearly something is wrong with your engine and it is not just the oil leak from cylinder head. I would strongly suggest you to not take the bike from the SVC till the issue is resolved. And like I said raise your voice, demand to talk to the manager there, get the regional area manager of Mahindra, post on their social media.

Your bike being unregistered does complicate matters.

Re: BSA Gold Star 650 Review

Hi,

Is anyone aware of any discounts available on the Goldstar 650 or if a new upgraded version addressing the current shortcomings (rear suspension, center stand, tubeless tyres) coming anytime soon?

Thanks,
Anil

I don't think any such upgrade is planned in the near future at least - the best to be hoped for is alloy wheels.

This has been launched long back in the UK, with the same issues. It was hoped that when they launch it here in India, these would be addressed.

Note that there is still no update in those markets for the suspension & alloys. But there have been after market alternatives and most are resorting to aftermarket suspension changes to address the shortcomings.

Re: BSA Gold Star 650 Review

Looks like this bike hasn't been received well. Haven't seen a single bike on-road.
Assuming that the sales are not that great, and March is coming up; is there any discounts going on official or otherwise?

Sadly this seems to be the case - I have seen only one Gold Star on the road in Pune since I got mine.

I think they need a major marketing push and range expansion. Not sure why there is no Cruiser and Scrambler yet.
