August 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only bikes that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Hero has found a new champion in Xtreme 125R! 27668 units sold and 7.7% MoM increment.

As an owner of multiple generations of Honda Unicorn(2005-2018, 2018-2021, 2021- ), I am extremely pleased to see how it continues to sell this much even after having literally no modern features(sans FI & ABS). It really is Honda's champion performer.

On the other hand, I am disappointed to see Hornet 2.0 not crossing 2k mark per month. I really find this bike amazing in the way it looks, feels and rides/handles. It deserves to sell more, IMO.

First of all, the target customers of Unicorn are okay with the lack of modern features in the bike. It still enjoys the advantage of being a no-nonsense bike with no competition. But the dismal part is the out of factory issue in initial pickup and laggy power delivery in the 2023-2024 OBD2 E20 version. Appalled to see HD X440 and Mavrick sell less than a 1000 units in the whole of the country. These are so much better than the competition (Classic, Honda, Jawa), surely deserve more love.

Ultimately, it is a game of numbers. We Indians keep cribbing about the lack of motorcycles, and when interesting and good bikes are launched, we keep buying the same old tired models. Now, why will any manufacturer take the risk of launching something new?

A good reminder about the #1 reason why people buy vehicles - looks and product identity!

The TVS Ronin is another example.

The Harley-Hero venture lacks the premium feel and an aspirational design to make any gains over the traditional players such as RE or the new entrant, Triumph. First thing, they need to fix their showroom experience. Second thing, the styling and fit&finish of both X440 and Mavrick. Mavrick is a confused platform as well. It looks like a muscle bike from front and a commuter from back. And don't forget the terrible cost cutting touches like a blank piece of plastic in place of X440s buttons on the switchgear. And the square tft screen in a round console on the X440. The retro market is all about design and details.

If they need the brilliant 440 motor to thrive, they need to create our version of a KLR650 and plonk it in an ADV.

Re: August 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

These motorcycles provide a no nonsense pure riding experience. At least the x440 does. What they lack is Marketing, Bling and the backing of a aspirational factor (Brand Name, History, etc) to make someone want to spend 3 big ones.

Personally, I loved the ride experience of the X440 to the extent of almost buying it. But the Honda Highness is such a sweet performer that it is very difficult to find a reason to replace the Highness in the Indian road and requirements context.

Re: August 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

I think Hero has established itself as a simple lower-middle class commuter motorcycle brand. It is hard coded in people's minds as a "commuter brand which sells splendors which is a reliable motorcycle easy to fix and maintain".

The OG HH Karizma days are long gone. Anyone with a budget of 2L or more will not consider buying a Hero. The new Karizma is also struggling to do good numbers.

The Harley 440 started off well with 2000 units per month but faded off soon after. Mavrick sold in low numbers since the first month itself.

I think it's all about brand image and positioning. Hero can make great engines and bikes but people won't buy it if they don't get the premium feeling like they would get buying a Bajaj made Triumph 400 or Honda 350 or the so called macho feeling of buying any RE 350.

Why is Ola missing from this analysis? Assuming they sell more than 500 units a month.

Happy to see healthy growth of RE 650 portfolio.

Why are the Honda 300 twins (CB300R CB300F) at ZERO sales? Their sales were steadily declining but I didn't expect to find nobody buying one in August.
