You can source a used well maintained stock exhaust as I have seen they do come for sale from time to time. The tyres were changed in April this year and I have put the same set even on my RD 200 which were over 14 years old now. These new ones are Michelin Street 2 and the front is 80/100 in 17 and rear is 100/90 in 17. Alloys are from a pulsar which were painted 14 years ago and the complete front end with disc brake except for the master cylinder (from a Apache) is from a Pulsar and so is the rear swingarm and the alloy.

| Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special Yeah, both are with MS Dhoni. had to sell them when I was short of money. The RD had evolved further before I sold it. RZ was completely stripped down for a rebuild, He bought it as is. Right now I have my most ported RD ever. |

I was hoping to get the Daytona home today but things don’t always go as planned. I like to keep my bikes in top shape always and that is one of the reason why I haven’t sat on both bikes yet let alone ride them as I wanted to swing my leg over only when I know they are 100% mechanically ok to be ridden. Did the same for the 848 as well as I rode it only after I bought it and the basic required maintenance was done. So, just posting an update on where we are with the work progress on the Daytona. My immediate concern was the front disc getting locked and i knew both front and rear master cylinder needed an overhaul. Unfortunately, the repair kit I ordered is not the correct size as for the RD 250F there were two different sizes listed on Yambits and I ordered the wrong one as the kit diameter is 14” which fits on the RD 400 Daytona Special as well. These are the challenges working on rare bikes but now that I know I have to order the right part. Further, the cone set was bad and I had already ordered a replacement which is the same size on the RZ as well but then I found a tapered bearing set in Japan which is yet to be shipped out. So, my friend fitted the tapered bearing he had in stock for his RD for now so that we could complete that fitment. Also, the fork oil seals which are 35mm same size as the RD 400 Daytona Special were fitted as well. On the front brake calliper when it was opened for service it was noted that the brake pads had worn out in an uneven pattern and the main culprit was the front wheel bearing which had gone bad so that was changed as well. Now only the front master cylinder parts are required to finish off the front end. Coming back on the bike the tank has been removed and cleaned for an epoxy coating to be done on the inside to stop any further rusting and that will also remove the need for the petrol filter which is put on both carbs. I personally don’t prefer them as they restrict fuel flow especially at higher speeds. The carbs have been cleaned again (the owner had cleaned it before delivery) and the rubber boots which are connected from the air box were replaced with the one I had got as the ones on the bike had developed cracks. 2t Oil tank has been cleaned as well and also the 2t pump has been cleaned and serviced. The air filter too has been cleaned and is in good condition. On the rear wheel the bearing is in good condition and now only the rear master cylinder part is required to put it back in place. It seems it is the same unit as the R15 and we shall see if the internals match on that. Also, have ordered NGK Plug Cable and Cap from Japan and awaiting delivery of those parts. Some pictures…. This is the first thing we do when we get a new old bike in the collection as many previous owners/mechanics skip on just basic preventive maintenance and parts fail. The cone set on the Daytona had gone bad and was changed with a tapered bearing. The OE ‘T’. These parts are next to impossible to get new now. Bottom part of the chassis Front brake pads The uneven wear thanks to the faulty front wheel bearing which was also the reason for the disc brake jamming up Front master cylinder internal rubber seals. This has to be replaced and have one in the basket in my Yambits purchase list. The rubber seal has aged too and will be replaced with a new one Front brake oil reservoir The top cap bolting screw bottom right is cracked. Will glue it for now till we get a replacement one Top view of the cap. Getting maintenance work done at the right guys is important to avoid such damages on the physical part and wallet Right side engine view minus the carbs, side panels and tank Left side view of the engine with the 2t Oil tank Top view with air filter taken out OE air filter looks in good condition The rear brake master cylinder Its leaking oil so the internal rebuild kit is required to fix it Internal of the rear master cylinder Inside of the fuel tank Bottom view of the fuel tank. The mounting bracket on this tank is unique to the 250 F , 400 F and Daytona series of these RD models. The 2T oil tank up close Rear view of the exhaust pipes with the rear wheel out Can see the rectifier in this image The carbs are back after being cleaned and the cables being synced. The new rubber boots from the airbox are also fitted on.

Distinguished - BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special Parts and more parts. Since, my aim is to maintain the Daytona in its 100% original state and to bring back the RZ close to its original factory look and fit I am constantly on the lookout for parts which are of immediate requirement or which may come in handy in the future. And while I am at it even got a few parts for the RX for the future locally. The ones for the Daytona and RZ will need to be bought down from UK. Some pictures…. Got a good used carburettor for the RX My model is a 4TL block RX 135 and the matching made in Japan carb 4TL spec complete headlight set old period correct style and not the clear lens 4TL spec OE wiring harness and metal key OE lock set (tank, handle lock and tool box) and the 4TL carb Managed to source an OE mirror for the Daytona unfortunately only the right side was available. Yamaha tuning fork logo The OE complete used front master cylinder for the Daytona. Will use the oil filler bottom and the top cap. Length’s one has to go to maintain originality. In good condition ASCO make the other type is a NISSIN which was used on UK models I guess and the internal fittings are different. The Daytona(RD 400) series had these though. OE new brake levers for the Daytona With part number. Might not use this for now and will keep it for future OE used stanley make taillight lens for the Daytona OE used fork yoke cover. All these parts were sourced from the same seller in UK who specialises in air cooled parts. So, i have now identified two good sellers for air cooled and liquid cooled RD for future requirements. OE used CDI for the RZ. Also, have identified an aftermarket wiring harness. Once the bike is stripped will take a call on what all needs to be changed depending on condition. So, planning in advance and being ready |

Distinguished - BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special As I had mentioned earlier I had ordered the wrong size front and rear brake internals and while I have to wait to carry back the right size parts from UK my friend went through his parts bin to see if a temporary alternate could be done so that the motorcycle becomes usable and as luck was on our side he did find a front mast cylinder unit without the lever and the part I had initially ordered as a replacement was a perfect fit on this master cylinder unit. This is a temporary fix till I get the right part back to India as I am going all out to maintain the OE parts and originality on both the Daytona and RZ. The rear master cylinder is currently running a R15 internal kit which is slightly smaller in diameter but working as desired. Initially there was a leak around the master cylinder but it was due to a damaged pipe which connects the oil reservoir and the master cylinder. Now the bike is 100% sorted mechanically except for the 2T pump which has to be drained out with new oil and adjusted for factory setting. Further, while continuing with my ongoing research on the Daytona I came across something interesting which only the Factory records will be able to answer as too why they did this modification on such a limited production run motorcycle. I wanted to get a spare tank and had identified a few used one including a new old unused tank. I was just comparing them and while visually they would look similar including the decals most of the tanks were designed for the RD 400 Daytona Special and were unlike the one on my 250 Daytona Special. The 250 tank is wider and resembles more to the TZ 750 tank (Coffin style) especially when viewed from top. Luckily I could identify this difference or else I would have ended up with another part to be kept in storage for ever and this would have been a very expensive display piece only Coming to tanks on inspecting the RZ tank we found out that it had been repaired from the bottom in the past and there was a leak and the water drain pipe was clogged as well. These tanks are known to rust and given its age I was prepared for it and expected nothing less. Luckily when the Daytona tank was given for a internal epoxy protection coating the painter told us about a guy who specialises in repairing tanks and we have given him the chance to try and fix it to the best of his abilities. While the whole bottom part of the tank will be replaced with a new customised piece, all the mounting points will be retained from the older piece for a perfect factory fit. However, I don’t plan to use this tank as I have ordered a UK manufactured copy tank that is supposed to be off good quality. With years of rust I didn’t want to end up in a situation like my RD 125 where the paint starts bubbling up. Sharing some pictures on the above update and of parts that I have ordered further for the RX, RD and RZ… Stocking old good parts always come in handy Luckily the wrong 5/8” diameter internal was a perfect fit. So incase of any issues in the future we have a workable backup solution The difference in diameter. Looks like most of the frame parts and brake parts are from RD 400 Daytona Special Ordering this kit as well so that new internal rubbers can be used for the original kit which have now worn out due to age and use. Kit is similar for the 250 and 400 Daytona series. But closer inspection of the tank says otherwise. Mine is on the right and on the left is a old new unused piece available on Ebay demanding a price tag of a few body organs. Same same but different. Mine doesn’t match any of the RD series and I will definitely have to get one made basis the original design as a backup. The Factory guys were really crazy to do something like this on such a single number exclusive limited edition production run. I compared it with a used tank available on Ebay to confirm my findings and the 400 DS tank both used and new version have identical design which don’t match the 250 DS design Top view comparison. Mine on the right is wider and looks closer to the coffin tank design seen on the legendary TZ 750’s. Factory team was like while everyone is focusing on four strokes we will end the air cooled two stroke run with a bang. What a homage if that is what the designers intended to do with this motorcycle. Top view comparison with the new and used 400 DS tanks. Attention to every single detail. Can you spot the difference? Patch work done on the RZ tank The slow leak The UK make copy tank. Supposed to be off good quality and not like the ones made in India and sold on Ebay for a premium. The filler cap position like the regular RZ/RD LC series. The seller also got me a matching key fuel cap, ignition key to match the seat locks I got from him earlier. So a single key will do the job. The JDM version OE tank will be fixed and kept as a backup for the next 45 years Decal Set for the JDM version just like mine. However, Sumant from OCD Detail Studio is confident that we can replicate the decal in paint. OE design three piece front brake pipes. Current ones are braided as well but is a two piece connected directly to the master cylinder. OE design non drilled brake rotors for the RZ Wiring harness for the RZ. Not sure if I would use it but being ready if we need it. Tapered cone set bearings. I had ordered two from WeBike, Japan but unlike Yambits they don’t stock and based on order ask their suppliers to manufacture. Since, they were not able to give me a shipment date even after a week after placing the order I cancelled the whole order and got these along with other parts from Ebay UK. Cost wise they were cheaper too and plus no shipping and customs. Replacement gear lever for the RZ incase we need it when putting it back together. Managed to source Yamalube 2T oil locally along with OE indicators for the RX. Also, got these UK make indicator set for the Daytona locally. Brake pads of the RZ were taken out to see if the ones I ordered were the correct size. A small portion of the new pad had to be trimmed out to have a perfect seat. The inner master cylinder rubber needs to be replaced and the new one has been added to the parts bin Front callipers of the RZ with the new pads. |

Distinguished - BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special Finally today I rode the Daytona for the first time and we are still not getting over the fact that this bike is so silent and feels like you’re riding a four stroke and let alone a parallel twin two stroke producing 30hp or maybe even more? My friend is amazed as well as too how much efforts the engineers at Yamaha put in on this motorcycle with the small yet many significant changes over regular RD’s that we are so used to seeing all of which together contribute in providing a riding experience like none other and they truly made a very special motorcycle. The power delivery is very smooth and linear which is a stark change from the regular RD’s and also the crankcase compression is on the lower side which gives it its characteristic low and quiet idle sound track. Now, waiting to take it out for a longer spin on the highway and before that have to get the Daytona home for the big reveal to my parents and other family members who have no idea about it yet. Also, got the tapered cone set bearing installed on the RX and changed the brake pads as they had rusted and expanded which was causing the brakes pads to rub against the rotor. Went trigger happy today and here are the many pictures I clicked today… Jab We Met.. Oldest garage member finally meets the newest members who are also it’s bigger brothers Evolution of two strokes. Mr. 1999 & Mr. 1979 95 Bhp two stroke power in one frame.. Colour pop. Red is common in all three… Daytona watching over the work done on the other two bikes as it now ready to go to its new forever home Front end on the RX taken down for tapered bearing cone set swap As the RX is anything but stock so every part that goes on needs careful planning and execution Preparing the surface for the new bearing Pulsar triple clamp The old ball bearing cone set which was almost due for change Dry fit to check everything fits all right On the Daytona the bottom old bearing was replaced with the regular ball bearing cone set and the top with a tapered one as that is what takes maximum load and this setup offers the best of both worlds Top smaller diameter tapered bearing. Getting the right size part is always crucial with such critical components All greased up for final fitment Top view of the RZ. The tank is now gone for repair work and will take some time as we want the perfection that we are seeking with this rebuild Mono shock connected on the chassis just below the air box Side view of the air box and engine Not sure if we will open up this engine yet and if we do it might get a power bump Will be all cleaned up and put together OE Japan make rear shock. Have to see if this will need a rebuild or a replacement Single twin cable ignition coil. Even the Daytona has a single coil unlike the regular RD’s which have twin coils one for each cylinder. View of the air box which seats below the tank just like modern bikes to free up space for the mono shock mounting point Yamaha 4L0 branding on the bottom of the air box Can’t have enough pics of these beauties One year apart but so different. The Daytona is 100 cc smaller and no liquid cooling with 17 less hp and yet has better front suspension and bigger and better carbs These two will smoke anyone who has green thoughts or ideas of taking the automobile industry green |

Distinguished - BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special Pictures continued…. The taillight lens is so huge that it needs two bulbs to have proper spread of light The bulbs are positioned at an angle so the spread of light reaches every corner The bulbs were so powerful that it was drawing too much current and because of that the headlight was a bit weaker. Only one of the two bulbs was of a original Stanley make. Nice and bright after the switch but not too bright Another angle Photo angle to match the red stripes on the paintwork This is how big the taillight unit holder is beneath the seat. The top portion is a tool box holder The seat cowl and the seat opens up like regular RD’s Battery, air box, 2t oil filler cap with wiring for low 2T oil level and the tank mounting points on the chassis . Front view Top view OE factory sticker Tool box Normally this sticker is found on the left side cover The old tank front mounting rubber Epoxy coating done no more rust deposits in the carbs Time to fill the belly up. Transferred almost 7 litres of petrol from the RX Still the tank was not even half full 2T Oil light is on as we had to fill up the tank Speedo in MPH and one needs to keep that in mind to avoid riding above the speed limit Tacho. Not sure if I will redline this but might give it a try to feel how it behaves higher in the rev range Time to bleed the 2T oil out Finally after months of owning it I hop on and take it for my first spin. Took it slow as the new pads front and back need time to bed in Piece of art From every angle and especially in this paint scheme Can’t believe it left the factory like this 45 years back looks like showroom condition still You don’t need to look on the side to find out who the manufacturer is when you’re riding behind this masterpiece Bird’s eye view… |

Distinguished - BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special Last batch of pictures… Waiting for the RZ tank to arrive and if we are satisfied with the craftsmanship we will have him make one for the Daytona as well This view screams TZ The kill switch and headlight controls.. Have to develop my muscle memory for this now High and low beam with turn indicators and horn control Even the mirrors have a unique design element Front disc with new pads Rear same size disc as the front. Have ordered new hose pipes as a backup A very special 250 The carbs look like the regular Mikuni 28 mm But have a different bowl construction in the interior and different size jets The OE fuel tap was serviced and being reused. With no rust in the tank no need for fuel filters in the fuel line to the carb which we anyway avoid as the flow is restricted causing fuel starvation which is not good for the engine at high speeds. Loss of power and worst one can seize their engine Attention to small details. A cutout in the fins to accommodate the oil pump cable Regular fins on the left side. So much new to learn on this bike every time you admire it |

Distinguished - BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special As an update on the RZ tank the welder has almost completed his work and more than 70% of the original metal has been replaced as most of the patch work done earlier had gone bad. The guy first opened the entire bottom portion of the tank which cleared the biggest doubt that we had that is if the petrol filler cap is the original one. The previous owner was confident and mentioned that its how it came on the JDM version but I had my doubts as during my research I never came across a single RZ with this type of a tank fuel fuel cap setup. Hence a decision had to be made whether to change it or not. I wanted to retain the original shape and look but then I needed the bottom portion of the original tank to we welded back on. Since, that would only be possible from a scrap tank outside of India the next best alternate was a bullet tank cap and we got one from the local shop along with the bottom tank metal on which the cap screws on. Now, the tank will be fitted on the bike to check if all clearances and alignment is proper with the side panels and seat along with the fuel cock alignment and after this is done the tank will be sent for the internal epoxy coating. This tank would be kept as a backup as I will mostly go with the new replacement tank which is going to be a challenge to carry back from UK considering its size and the other parts I have to carry back along in my next trip whenever that happens. Some pictures… The whole old bottom was cut out to be replaced Surprise Surprise I hope whoever did this didn’t do it to fit this type of fuel cap as this piece has been fitted with the water drain pipe required for this setup which had choked up and had to be replaced anyway. The old rust was scraped off Top paint was scraped off to expose the welding work done which was hidden under the paint The big patch that was welded on RE to the rescue of the RZ Bottom part of the RE cap Time to replace it with the new cap metal bottom Old piece if finally off. Hopefully it will now take on more fuel because of the filler cap placement which means lesser fuel stops The new piece is not welded on yet and the final positioning is being checked. You can see weld marks on the bottom section around the edges of the tank which was replaced as well. New bottom has been finally welded on the tank Side angle The other side and you see the weld mark from where the new section was welded on Top view of the nearly finished product. The amount of parts that have arrived at my friends place in UK which I have to carry back on my next visit For a change decided to take the RX for a longish Sunday breakfast ride My dad rides the RX more than me and since he rides it very slow a lot of 2t oil gets accumulated in the crankcase which get cleared when I ride it the way its been built to be ridden which is like a hooligan. Also, I wanted to run in the new tryes and check the feedback from the tapered bearing cone set replacement. Surprisingly my dad took it a day before fir some work and he commented that it rides and feels so good. To get such a compliment from him wasn’t expected but I am sure we will still have our disagreements on the amount I spend in maintaining my bikes to keep them running in top shape always. ABCG juice for some detox Followed by some nice strong coffee And then by some good Parsi Akuri. It was my first time at this place and I loved it An Iconic image with my first bike and what could/would be my first car. I keep telling my family if you think my craze for motorcycles is what madness truly looks like then just wait till I start buying cars Old is gold and sometimes also pink Karfule Pump is my new favourite spot to take pictures Barn find. My dad mentioned to me that the garage which has been closed (haven’t seen its inside contents since 1997) for decades finally revealed its contents as the roof collapsed because of its age and this it what greeted the society members who had forgotten that something was parked inside who knows when. Its owned by an old Maharashtrian gentleman who stays in the same complex. Seems to be like an old Austin but the rust is so bad that I couldn’t identify any markings to confirm it. The car is as long and wide as the garage without even the body on it. Trying to connect with the owner to get the history/story behind it which I am sure will be an interesting one. 135 & 650 both fun to ride in the city but the RX puts a bigger smile on your face and my friend enjoyed his small spin on it. Plan to take all my bikes one by one to this spot to make an epic collage |

Distinguished - BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special The RZ tank was fitted on the bike and it was a proper snug fit with the alignment matching the side panels and the petrol cock fitting was also perfect a job well done. The tank was then sent for an internal epoxy paint coat to prevent rusting and the outer portion where new metal was welded on was covered with red oxide paint. I am pleased with how this build is progressing and excited to get the RZ back in its original glory just like the way it came from the factory. This is going to be one crazy stupid fast two stroke in the collection. Some pictures… With the bullet tank cap. This is the same cap which sellers from India offer on the copy tank they sell on Ebay for over $300. I am getting a spare RZ cap and hopefully it will fit too. Only difference is that there is a lip depression in the metal which we don’t have. Aligns with the side panel perfectly Petrol cock on and was filled with fuel to confirm no leaks before it went for the protective paint coating. Protective paint applied inside and outside Epoxy coating Such a beautifully sculpted tank. Glad we could save it to best of our ability. When and if this tank get painted too and it will only have everything in paint and no decals Bottom of the tank Will measure and see how much fuel it can hold now as compared to the new tank. Yet to sit on the bike and waiting to get all the parts to fit and check before everything is dismantled and sent for powder coating and paint respectively. This is the look we aim to achieve. This is a 250 and only cosmetic difference is that it has a single disc at the front and 250 badging Other thought is to have a white set of panels for which I can use the original tank. I have a extra set of side panels only need the front mudguard and tail fairing and then I have a complete spare set |

Distinguished - BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special Daytona finally comes home As the family was home including my father I decided 12th Oct Dusshera day would be the perfect time to get the Daytona home. Back home only my wife knew about the bike and mother had an idea that some new bike is on the way. My sister and her family were home too so the pretext under which I told them they have to come down was that I plan to do a pooja of all the bikes on the occasion of Dusshera. Wifey made a few calls to a few cousins who stay close by and they were informed that a new bike is coming home but they can’t tell anyone at home about it. So at around 10 am I set off to get the bike from my friend’s place and the first thing I had to get done was a sticker to be applied in the front for the registration number. Once that was done I set off for home and wanted to make another stop at the fuel pump to top up the tank. We had already transferred 7 litres of fuel earlier and with all the usage a little over 11 litres went in further which costed 1200. Now, I wanted my family to see me ride the bike so I reached my building and called my wife to ensure everyone had come down. That’s when she informed me that Dad already went down and saw all the bikes were still under the cover so he knew something was not right and then when I got the confirmation that everyone is down I rode up towards them. My family was in such a shock that my sister asked me to go back down and come again so that she could record me ride back up again and focus more on the bike . As none of them had no idea about the Daytona my brother in law started asking me if I have modified one of my bikes and my father was like whose bike is it and then my wife finally told them that this is his 40th birthday gift to himself and it is his bike No.6 now. My father was used to this bike addition drama and was more keen on knowing which bike is it this time as he had never seen one as well. When I made them aware of it’s rarity and that this particular motorcycle is still original and just the way it came from the factory almost 45 years back is when they got really curious and started examining the bike and it’s details closely. My father was so curious that he himself got on the bike started it and rode it around the compound. He doesn’t prefer disc brakes and uses only the drum brake at the rear on the RX but that wasn’t an option on the Daytona. In the end everyone was impressed by the Daytona and they indeed found it to be something really special. Some pictures… Got a picture clicked with the Daytona while we were getting the front registration number stickers done. So many people stopped and clicked pictures of the bike. The colour really pops under the sunlight. Don’t miss my T shirt one I had bought and preserved for this day. Clicking some pictures while I wait in my building for my family members to come down The decal all lined up Captured by my wife. Father’s face says it all. He was full of???? My cousin who is just crazy about bikes as me congratulating my father who is like how come you’re here? You knew about the bike? Truth is he knew a bike is coming not which one. Beauty… Candid captures One with me as well My wife and my niece getting some pictures clicked with the Daytona All smiles… Doing my part of the welcome rituals Little one is ready for her first bike pooja Youngest one in the family welcoming the 2nd oldest bike in the collection. My RD 125 is a 1979 model as well but the Daytona is a December manufactured model. Beautifully captured Making good use of the decoration done by the society for Navratri Love the colour pop One with the immediate family to welcome the new family member And one with the extended family members New set of covers for the Daytona Have to now up skill on my space management techniques Temporary parking spot for now. BHPian | Re: My Legendary Yamahas | RZ 350 and RD 250 Daytona Special Some real pretty pictures I was about to say the white looks good and there I scroll down to a finished in white bike! The view from the side makes the tank look as if something is missing, maybe because we are used to the Indian paint schemes of RX and RD with the double pin stripe outline of the tank. Looks gorgeous and the lil' one doing the pooja paints an even prettier picture. Great going. Wishing you and your Dad great rides. Last edited by Freespirit27 : 13th October 2024 at 10:50.
