July 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only bikes that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Aprilia RS457 seem to be punching above it's weight considering it's price tag. And this is with their really poor dealer network and slow deliveries.

Being a Gixxer 250 owner, the motorcycle is basically dead in the Indian market. 63 units sold and I thought 100 units were bad Z900 outsold the 250s. How long Suzuki will turn a blind eye to the catastrophic market failure of the Gixxer 250 twins. But good to see the V Strom 250 getting some recognition.

Wow, big drop for Hero ! And other than Suzuki and Aether, every other company has seen a drop in sales MoM. Hope it recovers quickly in the coming months. With monsoon also being mostly normal this year, hopefully the rural demand too will pick up.

Splendor, Super Splendor and Activa has seen a big drops this month. And in the past 12 months, only Dec 2023 (expected , year end) and July 2023 was lower than July 2024 sales. Hoping things pickup quickly.

Re: July 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

Surprising to see iQube and Chetak both doing 20k + numbers in one month while Ather struggling to go past 4-5k for their popular models. Granted that they have lower footprint (showroom wise) across the country but the excellent numbers by TVS and Bajaj shows how much average Indian consumers still trust reputed and well established brands when it comes to EV in the world of start-ups. I can only imagine what will be the condition of these unicorn EV manufacturers when the Big 4 {Hero( proper Hero, not backed by Hero), Honda, Yamaha , Suzuki} enters the EV market with proper EV scooters. They have to built the reputation, goodwill and name for themselves till big guys enters the market with all guns blazing.

P.S. I don't see any OLA sales figures in above stats. Do they not disclose the data? My mutual fund is one of the QIB who invested heavily in the recent OLA electric IPO. Hope they are not doing some number games behind the curtains.

I am sure this would have been asked before, but I am unable to figure it out.

Why isn't Ola counted in this analysis?

What does -1 mean for the Aprilia RS660? Did someone return their motorcycle or what
Consistent single digit performance from the Yamaha R3. I am not sure on what basis Yamaha was confident enough to start planning for their Tenere series.

Anniversary discounts worked well for the Triumph 400 twins. It will be interesting to see if they can maintain the momentum in the coming festive season with the extended discounts.

RE’s new entrant’s acceptance will be better known in the coming months. So far, I haven’t noticed much enthusiasm for the new launch in the riding community. The Guerrilla 450 might end up boosting sales of the Triumph twins.

Re: July 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

Even after 40 years after its launch, the Splendor nameplate still clocks in sales of 2 lakh units plus per month. Truly a business school case study!
Ather Rizta seems to have struck a chord with buyers. Important pointer that the "core" of the Indian scooter market in terms of volumes is still the "family scooter" segment.
How is Kawasaki surviving with these volumes? Do they manufacture anything or is it just assembling imported units?

Re: July 2024: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

I've never observed but looks like TVS XL Super Moped doesn't have any decent competition and TVS is comfortably selling 40,000 units a month.

Another observation, Kawasaki, Triumph(except 400), Harley(except 440) are not doing very well. Not sure how long they can sustain on these numbers.

Happy to see the decline of fly-by night Chinese kit assembly makers like Okinawa. They fell down extremely hard on a YoY basis.

A bit surprised to see Chetak EV up there too.
