re: Ola scooter Gen 3 platform. EDIT: OLA S1 Gen 3 launched at Rs. 79,999

Highlights of the new Gen 3 scooter platform:

- Integration of 4680 cells, with improvedl energy density and rapid charging abilities, enhancing range and faster charging times. The Bharat 4680 cells offers lithium-ion cell packs with five times the energy density (275 Wh/kg) compared to the current 2170 form-factor cells.

- Gen 3 platform focuses on component integration. Ola has brought the motor and battery pack closer together, resulting in a more compact and efficient powertrain. It optimizes space utilization and reduces the overall weight. Battery is now a structural part, making the platform more rigid.

- The new platform significantly reduces the wiring harness with lesser intricate network of wires. This simplification enhances reliability, boosts performance, and streamlines the manufacturing process for Ola.

- The Gen 3 Platform enhances scalability, enabling the development of a wider range of scooter variants, including commuter, sports, and tourer models.

- New Gen 3 integrated motor without a permanent magnet, will be more powerful and efficient. It will be made of materials sourced entirely from India.

- The new and improved single ECU will replace the multiple ECUs previously utilized in earlier platforms, such as Gen 1 with 10 units and Gen 2 with 3. Designed to accommodate Ola's in-house chip in the future, this streamlined ECU will enable the integration of additional features, including advanced driver assistance systems.

Although I am not a big fan of Ola especially their work culture, but recently what I have started liking is their commitment to stay in two-wheeler market and capture higher sales.

They lack in engineering and also in service, but I hope they will overcome such issues soon.

With his nationalistic jingoism like wearing kurta, replacing $ with rupee sign in keyboard and now this bharat cell, I am going to stay away. This is more of new age investor trapping mechanism to be in the news everyday with all sorts of nonsense.

Keep quiet and let your work or product speak, which is not the case here.

I booked two Ola's during pre launch. Had to rush to cancel those when the launched product was breaking and burning literally.

Ola Gen 3 platform-based e-scooter to debut by January 2025

According to a media report, Ola Electric will begin deliveries of its Gen 3 platform-based electric scooters by January 2025.

Ola scooter Gen 3 platform. EDIT: OLA S1 Gen 3 launched at Rs. 79,999-ola.jpg

Ola Electric revealed its Gen 3 platform in August this year. The first e-scooters based on the latest architecture were expected to debut by March-April 2025. However, these are now expected to arrive much earlier.

Ola’s Gen 3 platform is said to deliver 26% better performance and a 22.5% reduction in costs compared to the Gen 2 platform. It is scalable, and the battery, motor, and electronics have been integrated into a single unit, with the battery being a structural element.

The Gen 3 battery consists of 4,680 cells that are larger in diameter and have a 10% higher energy density. Ola has also improved the shock resistance and thermal efficiency of the batteries.

The new electric motor features magnetized electrical coils instead of permanent magnets, which are said to be more efficient and generate higher torque. Ola has also integrated the Battery Management System (BMS) and Motor Control Unit (MCU) into a single high-performance multi-core processor.

These 2 sentences when put together scare me - esp since they are coming from Ola. Add to that the recent statement - "Our service issues are thing of past" makes me worry that this is a company that still focusses more about marketing / sales than engineering and customer service.

On a lighter note, this new generation's "instant complaint closing ability" has gone up to 99.6% compared to the previous generation's 99.1% .

re: Ola scooter Gen 3 platform. EDIT: OLA S1 Gen 3 launched at Rs. 79,999

22% reduction in costs, so must surely offset the lower subsidies coming from April 2025 and no subsidies from April 2026, makes sense, whenever subsidies are reduced, Ola does one thing, bring in a new generation, the Gen 2 came after the subsidies were reduced in 2023 and promised them a 25% reduction in costs and now the Gen 3 is just in time, moreover, competition is getting stiff with TVS and Bajaj catching up and Honda set to enter the race as well, so Ola needed something up its sleeve to keep the customers interested, and lo and behold! a Gen 3 platform which is prepended by 7 months or so (initial timeline was August 2025). Considering this I am quite skeptical of it being a half-baked product just like almost all their products are.

I was hoping Ola would learn something from the negative customer feedback and improve with the Gen 3, but I guess they are rushing it to not fall behind the competition as they still only care about sales and nothing else it seems.

I hope there'll be some clarity on the S2 and S3 Maxi scooters. Showcase of a concept or a timeline would work.
Although it's much more likely that the S1 itself will be the first one to shift to Gen3.

Hopefully the integration of BMS and MCU along with the other claimed changes simplifies repairs.

"The new electric motor features magnetized electrical coils instead of permanent magnets, which are said to be more efficient and generate higher torque"

Ola seems to be saying that induction motors are more efficient and product higher torque than a permanent magnet motors which is wholesale wrong.

A PM motor is more efficient and produces higher torque and also at wider range of motor speeds than an induction motor. Its also more expensive though.

re: Ola scooter Gen 3 platform. EDIT: OLA S1 Gen 3 launched at Rs. 79,999

I think like most of us have guessed, Ola is moving to induction motors for cost savings. They could utilize some low cost OEMs to make the induction motors. Maybe someone looking to diversify from making for electric fans. Only worry is the quality of OEMs Ola might approve.

One advantage owners will have is that if Ola breaks down, now they will be able to roll it like any two wheeler which has run out of petrol. I think Permanent magnet motors has risk of potential build up during free wheeling, which Induction may not have.

re: Ola scooter Gen 3 platform. EDIT: OLA S1 Gen 3 launched at Rs. 79,999

With so much consolidation of part into integrated assemblies, I wonder what would happen to the ability to repair. If part quality doesn't cater to reliability/ longevity and if something were to happen to the battery or electronics, would we have any repair options since the box is a structural component? Instead of changing one ECU somewhere in the entire wiring harness, would we require to change the entire board?
