Yamaha unveils AMT tech for motorcycles; Debut on all-new upcoming bike

Yamaha has unveiled its new Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) tech for its motorcycles.

The new tech, named Y-AMT, comes with two electronic actuators, one for the clutch and the other for changing gears. The tech will feature two modes: automatic and manual. The latter will allow riders to change gears via buttons on the bike's handlebars. When riding in automatic, the Y-AMT tech further offers two modes: D+ (equivalent to sport mode) and D (for long-distance cruising).

Yamaha has hinted that the tech could be offered on its street naked and sport-tourer models, although the brand has yet to confirm the same. Reports also suggest that Yamaha is developing an all-new motorcycle, which could be the first model to feature the Y-AMT tech.

Yamaha is the latest two-wheeler brand to offer automatic transmission on their motorcycles, following the likes of BMW, Honda and KTM.

Hope Yamaha does their work properly and the transmission doesn’t have that irritating and disgusting “head nod” jerk while changing gears as we have with AMT equipped cars.

Cheers

Re: Yamaha unveils AMT tech for motorcycles; Debut on all-new upcoming bike

Curious about how this would work out. Instinctively we reach out with left hand and toe when we need to shift. In case of Scooters we just shut off that part of the brain. Wont this require extra effort from the rider? Drawing parallels to the "AMT" setup of the current crop of vehicles (4W) , we do tend to put it in D mode and forget about it till we need to park. Will this same paradigm hold? Then again Yamaha produced the Niken, which completely turned the concept/perception that we knew as a bike upside down, so i am sure their implementation of this would be rather innovative too.

I would like to see this technology trickle down to 400-650cc bikes as well.

Does anyone remembers TVS Jive?

I feel like TVS did something phenomenal back in 2009 and no body ever praised them for what they did. I still have a TVS Jive in the family it is close to 15 years old and still running strong.
