Honda Stylo 160cc scooter patented in India

Honda has patented the Stylo 160 scooter in India. If launched, the new model could compete with the Yamaha Aerox 155 and the upcoming Hero Xoom 160.

The Honda Stylo 160 is currently available in Indonesia. It will be positioned above the Activa as a more premium offering. The scooter has a neo-retro look with a circular LED headlamp, round mirrors and a single-piece seat with sculpted body panels on either side. Some of the features include a digital instrument console, USB charging port and keyless ignition.

Powering the Stylo 160 is a 156.9cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. It produces 15 BHP @ 8,500 rpm and 13.8 Nm @ 7,000 rpm.

The Stylo 160 is equipped with a telescopic front fork and a single shock absorber at the rear. It rides on 12-inch alloy wheels and is equipped with disc brakes supported by dual-channel ABS.

Hope they launch this and not go in the way of PCXs and Varios and Forzas.

Re: Honda Stylo 160cc scooter patented in India

I never understood the Japanese fascination with the South East Asian markets, where they have always been eager to invest more and provide them with better products, while India gets a step motherly treatment. It's the same with the likes of Toyota, Honda, Yamaha etc...

The Indonesian two wheeler market is currently about 5-6 million units annually, far lower than the 8 million peak a decade ago. It's declining or at best stagnant. India's two wheeler market is heading towards the 20 million mark on the other hand. They keep pushing us the Activa 20G (or whatever iteration of the same thing) while Indonesia gets this, the irony! Honda still hasn't launched a model in the burgeoning electric two wheeler segment.

Saying Honda is sleeping at the wheel is being unfair, cause when your asleep you're still breathing and perhaps dreaming even. The Japanese in India are in a comatose stage!

Like in Democracy... You Get What you deserve.

If All that Indians want is the Activa 20G, who are we to question??

I saw that MotorInc clip as well.

But suddenly someone brings into the market a game changer product and the incumbent will be caught napping. Right now Honda is sleeping in peace thanks to the sales of the Activa and Shine.

What sells in Indonesia is also likely to sell well in Thailand or Vietnam or Malaysia because they are similar markets. While Indonesia alone might be relatively small, ASEAN countries together is as big as Indian market in terms of two or 4 wheeler sales. Even ASEAN GDP matches that of India. Population too is not too shabby at 600 million (40% of India).

But here is the kicker -> ASEAN GDP per capita is 3x that of India. So it makes sense for the Japs to launch more premium products there. Indian two wheeler market might seem large but (Activa + Splendor) constitutes 35% of the sales. Marketshare of > 150 cc (excluding 150 cc) two wheelers is something like 10% or 15%.

They might not be the biggest market in terms of sheer numbers but the south east Asian markets generally buy a lot more premium small motorcycles than us. There is a stark contrast between our riding/motorcycling culture and theirs. They spend often double or more of what they paid for their 150s and 200s on mods alone. You can spot scooters and underbones with Ohlins and brembos everywhere. In essence, it is an enthusiast and lifestyle oriented market. Our scooter market is still heavily reliant on workhorse/family scooters.

The big sales numbers are brought in by the commuters and 100-125cc budget scooters in India. Despite the moderate success of Aerox, it still sells only about 2000 units compared to 2,60000 units of Activa and 60k+ units of Access 125s. And you have to consider the fact that Yamaha has a way more sportier and youth oriented market positioning in India compared to the grown up image of Honda.

Re: Honda Stylo 160cc scooter patented in India

I have wondered why we never get the step thru style scooters with larger wheels (even if resigned to the same old 110/125 mill) atleast it might offer a better ride and stability (besides a sight for tired eyes). This Stylo seems to be fascinated by the Fascino styling theme
