More affordable Bajaj Chetak e-scooter with hub motor spied

Bajaj has been working on a more affordable version of the Chetak e-scooter. Now, a pre-production test mule has been spotted testing on public roads.

The low-cost Chetak will feature a hub motor setup, unlike the existing model which has a mid-mounted motor with a set-down gearbox integrated into the swingarm. The former is a more cost-effective solution, which has been adopted by other brands as well.

Apart from the new powertrain, the upcoming version looks similar to the current Chetak. It has the same retro design, with a circular LED headlamp, a round instrument console and a flat seat. Rumours suggest Bajaj could use fibre body panels instead of metal.

The new low-cost variant of the Chetak is likely to be offered with the same 2.9 kWh battery offering a range of 108 km on a single charge. The hub motor is rated at 5.36 BHP, enabling the e-scooter to reach a top speed of 60 km/h.

Re: More affordable Bajaj Chetak e-scooter with hub motor spied

Haven't seen a Chetak on Bangalore roads for a long time now. All I see are TVS iQubes, OLA S1/Pro, Athers and the copy-cat scooters from numerous "Indian assemblers".

Bajaj's CEO, for once, should shut his motor mouth and let their action speak for themselves. During Chetak's launch, he said the monthly production volumes will be at 10K units initially and will be gradually increased considering domestic growth and exports in mind. Till date, Chetak has not achieved that sales figures while their main competitor TVS motor's iQube is going places. Even domestic start-ups like Ather and OLA sell much more scooters than Chetak.

I am still wondering if it really makes sense for Bajaj to continue selling this product for such meagre volumes!

Re: More affordable Bajaj Chetak e-scooter with hub motor spied

It appears to me that Bajaj is potentially tarnishing the Chetak brand. Given their production volumes and capabilities, the reliance on hub motors is perplexing. It's my belief that the battery and its management system are the principal cost elements, with other components contributing to the overall price. Given Bajaj's scale, why is this an issue? Shouldn't they be able to streamline their supply chain and allocate resources to the necessary research and development, and so forth?

Electric two-wheelers are here to stay in India. They benefit the environment due to the sheer number of vehicles and are advantageous to owners because of their economical operational costs. If Revolt Motors could devise attractive financing solutions, Bajaj should undoubtedly be able to do so as well, assuming they desire to make the initial costs more affordable for consumers.

Bajaj Chetak Urbane to get a smaller battery & 113 km range

Bajaj Auto is working on a new entry-level variant of the Chetak electric scooter. The new Urbane variant is likely to get a smaller battery pack.

According to a government document, the Urbane variant will be offered with a 2.48 kWh battery pack instead of the 2.88 kWh unit that powers the Premium variant. The smaller battery is said to deliver a range of 113 km on a single charge.

The Urbane variant measures 1,894 mm in length, 725 mm in width, 1,132 mm in height, and its wheelbase is 1,330 mm. While the dimensions are identical to the Premium variant, it weighs 3 kg less.

The entry-level variant of the Chetak is already being tested on public roads. Spy images suggest that it is likely to get a more cost-effective hub-mounted motor instead of a mid-mounted set-up with a set-down gearbox integrated into the swingarm.

It's not a smaller battery. It has the same battery (2.9 kWh) as the current premium variant with a 2.4 kWh usable capacity in both models. Bajaj will introduce a new premium variant with a bigger battery as per official information by Bajaj. While the urbane variant is launching this month, the premium variant with a bigger battery is expected in Q1.

It looks like the new model details are already updated on the official Chetak website. It has slightly higher range (113 vs 108 km) and a much better top speed (73 kmph vs 63 kmph).

Bajaj Chetak to get an affordable variant in May

Bajaj Auto is planning to introduce a new base variant of the Chetak electric scooter next month. It will be positioned below the existing Urbane and Premium trims.

In a recent interaction with the media, Rakesh Sharma, Executive Director of Bajaj Auto, said, "The product upgrade in the fourth quarter was very well accepted. We will be launching a new product by May."

He went on to state that the new product will have a more mass appeal. "We hope to attack the mass segment (with the new model). I cannot share the price, but it's not going to be a premium offering."

Bajaj launched the 2024 Chetak in January. It uses a 3.2 kWh battery pack that offers an increased range of 127 km. The new base variant is likely to feature a hub-mounted motor.

Affordable Bajaj Chetak e-scooter leaked ahead of launch

Bajaj Auto is gearing up to launch a new entry-level variant of the Chetak e-scooter next month. But images of the affordable variant have already leaked online.

At first glance, the affordable variant of the Bajaj Chetak looks similar to the standard model. It is likely to be offered in a range of vibrant colours, including the bright blue seen here. It has a black apron, seat and grab handle and rides on black steel wheels.

The entry-level variant of the Chetak gets a physical key with open cubbies on either side and a monochrome LCD instrument console. Disc brakes have also been replaced with conventional drum brakes.

Interestingly, despite being the affordable variant, this scooter doesn’t have a hub motor. That being said, it is likely to offer slightly less power than the Urbane and Premium variants and could use a 2.9 kWh battery pack.
