TVS XL electric moped in the works; patent leaked

TVS already has a strong presence in the electric 2-wheeler segment with the iQube. Now, the company is said to be working on an electric version of its XL moped.

A leaked patent image of the upcoming moped shows a modified TVS XL with a battery pack mounted on the underside of the frame and a small electric motor that sends power to the rear wheel via a chain drive.

Apart from the electric powertrain, other components like the telescopic front suspension, dual rear shock absorbers, brakes and spoked wheels appear to have been carried over from the petrol version. Speaking of which, the standard XL uses a 99.7cc, single-cylinder engine that makes 4.3 BHP and 6.5 Nm. It has a payload capacity of 130 kg.

Once launched, the TVS XL electric moped could compete with the Kinetic e-Luna. Both models are expected to come at an affordable price point compared to electric scooters from Ather Energy, Ola Electric and Bajaj Auto.

The primary users of TVS XL now are farmers and store owners. The farmers in remote areas will not convert to EV because of unreliable electricity and range concerns.

So the primary users of TVS XL EV will be urban store owners/ delivery people who need to move stuff around the town cheaply

The erstwhile petrol tank area which is left empty in the patent image could also be converted to provide more space to carry stuff.

Initially i had some concerns about the distribution infrastructure for EV's too, but I am finding EV adoption in kerala going up as a lot of houses have set up state subsidized Solar panels which effectively provide free electricity.

On the other hand, farmers get free electricity, and the electricity supply in the rest of india is not as poor as that of rural TN, so unreliable vs free should be an interesting battle

This is not entirely true. While most in my village (about 100 kms from Hyderabad) use decades old entry level motorcycles, there are already handful of electric scooters (mostly Chinese makes) purchased in last few years. We personally use an iqube for errands in the village. Electricity, atleast in Telangana, is not unreliable. There is huge untapped potential at the lower end of the market.

With Electricity being supplied for free for farm use in some states, farmers can benefit better than the urban user.

They also know when electricity will be supplied/cut. They can plan for the same.

The batteries are likely detacheable and many will buy backup batteries for the same if they are moderately priced. (which TVS will)

You meant to say otherwise I guess. Electricity supply in rural TN is not as poor as the rest of India

I've heard that electricity in rural tn is very bad, that it comes only for a few hours a day, and all capacity is diverted to the cities, especially Chennai

TVS, with its strong R&D unit, has the potential to execute this project well. If TVS can achieve a real life range of around 110-120 kms then the E-XL moped will sell in good numbers.
The TVS XL Moped already has a formidable brand equity. Known for its frugal, simple yet tough build, consumers, particularly in rural areas, swear by it.
If the E-XL carries forward the same attributes then TVS will have a sales star in their product lineup.
