India has the highest number of 2-wheelers in the world

According to the latest Road Transport Year Book, India has the highest number of registered 2-wheelers in the world, with Indonesia in second place.

India has the highest number of 2-wheelers in the world-trafficindia165303128416x9.jpg

As per the data, India had 32.63 crore vehicles in 2020. Out of these, nearly 75% were 2-wheelers. In the past 3 years, more than 2 crore vehicles have been registered, which puts the total number of vehicles on Indian roads to 34.8 crore.

Among all the states and union territories, Maharashtra sits at the top with the maximum number of registered vehicles. The state has 3.78 crore vehicles, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 3,49 crore and Tamil Nadu with 3.21 crore vehicles.

Among big cities, Delhi tops the list with 1.18 crore registered vehicles, followed by Bangalore with 96.4 lakh vehicles. The data also shows that Faridabad has the highest number of registered commercial vehicles. The high number of registered private vehicles in the 55 million-plus cities is said to be an indication of inadequate public transport.

When it comes to passenger cars, India ranks eighth in the world. The top three spots are occupied by China, USA and Japan, respectively.

Pune being the CITY with the highest number of two wheelers!

Just goes to show how deplorable public transport is and how govt is happy squeezing taxes out of us. Why incur capital expenditure on public transport when you can make people buy vehicles and earn taxes doing nothing

When India moves up this list, imagine the chaos at hill stations & other tourist traps on 3-day extended weekends

Not surprising. On one hand, two wheelers are less safer than cars. So when per capita income grows and if government encourages 3-4 lakh cars with tax benefits, there will be more cars on road and lesser motorcycles. Road traffic deaths will reduce.

On the other hand, we don't have wide roads to accomodate more cars. No parking spaces in cities already. We are not prepared to have the number of cars like China with our poor infrastructure.

Or government will punish car buyers by imposing more taxes and making cars out of reach to middle class making them buy more two wheelers as public infrastructure is pathetic in most cities.

Vision is needed to decide on the best course of action when our population has more per capita income in hand in the future.

Either
(i) develop world class public transport infrastructure, extensive Metro network and then punish car buyers with prohibitively high tax, astronomical car parking fees etc. like in Europe and Singapore, or

(ii) Incentivise low priced cars, build world class road network starting from inside cities, develop vertical parking and see people move to cars.

Tourist places are already nightmares. Poor local people who have to endure in weekends and holiday seasons. I remember Ooty, Kodaikanal in 2005. Going to these hill stations now is a nightmare on weekends with bumper to bumper traffic worser than Bangalore.

Government can restrict the number of cars, motorcycles, buses entering hill stations by giving tokens by advance reservation.

With the highest population and the largest 2-Wheeler manufacturer, not at all surprised!

I see this as the only way forward for any of our cities, given our population density, pollution, and land prices. At least for the core city areas. Good public transport with last-mile connectivity through EV ride sharing/autos.

This is just the beginning. Remember the world's longest traffic jam in China?
We are getting there!

Re: India has the highest number of 2-wheelers in the world

Many of the new E ways are out of bounds for two wheelers. With their numbers mushrooming they can only add to the otherwise existing traffic chaos in and around any and every human settlement and the tarred or cemented/concreted links between such settlements. The concern is because a majority of these reach riders who care two hoots for traffic rules.

The traffic bubble has already burst, and with each passing day, it will get worse. There is no such thing as “Off Season” in our country. In the peak seasons of winter and summer, you can see huge crowds or queues. Presently, not a single day goes by when we hear news of a cloudburst in the mountain area, yet people with their toddlers are going there. The number of vehicles is one issue, but not using a brain is another.

End of rant.

The report is based on this original data by Ministry of Transport. https://morth.nic.in/sites/default/f...18-2018-19.pdf

Despite vast Metro Network, it has not stopped Delhi/NCR (Delhi + Faridabad) from having 2 crore vehicles, Bengaluru fares next worst understandably because the working population of Bengaluru needs a vast Mass Rapid Transport and it is still 5 years from getting to a reasonable level of that.

Clearly Pune is not in that top 5 from the data source or news report.
Are you saying percentage of two wheelers to population ? Or did I miss the data you have based you point on

This is exactly what I've been thinking during my recent rides. Around 5 years ago, we could strategically plan our trips during off-peak times, like visiting on weekdays to avoid the crowds or choosing August or September to escape the summer vacation rush. However, nowadays, it seems like no matter which day we pick, all the tourist places are packed with people. As you said there is no such thing as an "Off Season" in our country. We can always expect to encounter huge crowds or long queues.

It's already a nightmare in places like Kodaikanal on vacation weekends. Inexperienced drivers burn the clutch and rev the engine unnecessarily, which makes the situation worse.

Not sure where Pune stands with respect to other cities in this regard, but people here ride like absolute lunatics. I'd say at least 75% of them don't wear helmets (forget about pillion riders wearing one), and you can find them everywhere - on the elevated footpath/cycling track, on the wrong side of the road coming straight at you, in the BRTS lane, etc. They also never slow down near housing societies and schools.

About the number of two wheelers here, Pune should easily be among the top 5 Indian cities with the highest numbers, but again, I'm not sure.

I think major reason for this is WFH. Before covid without wfh, people had to apply for leaves thereby things were done according to plan. Nowadays with wfh facility one can be flexible and travel as they wish. They can simply login during the travel or during the stay.
