BMW to launch new sunglasses with a built-in head-up display

BMW has introduced its new ConnectedRide Smartglasses - sunglasses featuring a head-up display built into the lens.

The new BMW sunglasses with the integrated HUD are slightly thicker than a regular pair of glasses, but have been designed to give it a sleek look. It gets a small lithium-ion battery to power a tiny HUD projector, which displays various bits of information on the right lens.

Although the display is small, the HUD does showcase information such as outside temperature, speed, speed limit, gear position and even turn-by-turn navigation either with simple arrows or detailed directions with street names. The smart glass is said to be capable of lasting up to 10 hours on a full charge. Further, the smart glass is connected to a smartphone via the BMW Motorrad App, which allows riders to change the position of the HUD either via the app or even the handlebar controls.

The lens on the smart glass comes with an 85% tint, essentially turning it into sunglasses. However, users can also fit prescription lenses via an optician with an RX adaptor. The smart glass is also designed to fit a variety of heads and helmet shapes, ensuring it is comfortable to wear for an entire day.

The BMW Smartglass will be offered in different sizes, however, pricing for the same is yet to be released. Reports state that the glasses will go on sale in the United States sometime later this year.

Oh God! another solution for the problem which never exist, who does not have microseconds to look into speedo meter for this info or they are targeted to F1 racers?

And add another charger into the car to charge these cool glasses: rofl.

Re: BMW to launch new sunglasses with a built-in head-up display

Seen similar tech for motorcycle helmet visors too.

Curiosity questions -
1. How long does it take for the human eye to shift the focal plane from very close focus (few mms to cms) to infinity focus?
2. How is peripheral vision impacted at very close focus?

What are the Safety implications associated with all such tech, especially when driving at speed?

Re: BMW to launch new sunglasses with a built-in head-up display

The BMW UK website has a placeholder for the price at 4 digits. So it has to cost at least 999 GBP, that's INR 1,00,000!!!!
