Wow! That's a tad on the richer side.

At those nos (even on road), the 400s would have their work cut out. They ought to be priced closer in the ballpark of the Duke and regular 390A respectively, give or take. 5 lakh, even on road, is about 65k more than the top of line spoke wheel / adjustable suspension equipped 390A and 90k more than the normal 390A. No way it can afford to stand that much above IMO.

Re: Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X unveiled

Booked the scrambler on Friday. Received a call this morning (Mumbai). He said on road price will be around 3.5 & the speed is around 15k below that. Lets see.

I agree with the insights. I have also booked Scambler and my take is it should be placed between 2.75 - 2.90 for Speed and 2.95 - 3.10 for Scrambler.
Though this price point is good as this is true triumph DNA as quote in the video below still they can be little more competitive looking at competition in hand with similar models like Hunter, 310GS, KTM.
They should ideally keep themselves lower to 650 machines of RE.

Re: Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X unveiled

Got a call from BU Bhandari Triumph today. The rough estimated price for both the 400s would be between 3.5 to 4 lakhs. Price difference between Speed 400 and Scrambler 400x would be around 20-30k.
With the specs and pricing of HD440 coming in, seems they have aimed directly at a chunk of RE's pie.
The Triumph 400 twins anyday appear to be a better proposition now. Hoping that they get the pricing correct.

Would the service costs be at par with the bigger triumphs (similar to what bmw does) or would there be some rationalization considering these are entry level models into the brand?

Thanks. Actually wanted to understand how pillion would fare on these considering the compactness? Any thoughts?

3.5-4L for the Street and 4.2-5L for the Scrambler

Even at the lower end of pricing (assuming this is on-road Pune) the new Triumphs have some work to do. 3.5L for the Street 400 puts it within striking distance of the KTM Duke 390, RE Interceptor/GT650 and BMW G310R. All of which are more or less proven bikes with huge fanbases for each model.

The Scrambler is in a bit of a weird position, it's definitely not an off roader and even 4.2L on-road Pune is on the higher side for the segment. KTM's 390 Adventure (alloy) is about 4.02L and BMW's G310GS is about 3.8L.

If it's ex-showroom then I'd ask Triumph to kiss the hopes of decent sales goodbye. 3.5L and 4.2L ex-showroom would put the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 at 4.2L and 5.1L respectively for Pune. For that price the only people who'd even consider the Triumph 400's are hardcore Triumph fans and people willing to spend 70-80k over competitors for a style symbol.

My guess after HD X440 launch:
Speed 400 : Rs 2.79 L
Scram 400 : Rs 2.99 L

Ideal prices but the duke 390 is available at the same price.

Re: Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X unveiled

I'd have to say the Speed 400 has to be less than the Duke 390's 2.97 ex-showroom. No TFT display, no connectivity, no quickshifter, and slightly less power. I'd expect it to be 2.7 or so ex-showroom. The same goes for the Scrambler vs. the 390 ADV, about 3.2 to the ADV's near 3.4. Otherwise it wouldn't make much sense at all. Too few will go for the Triumph just because it's a triumph. Heck, at 4.5 OTR I'd just wait for a top-spec Shotgun 650. Even the lowest spec Super Meteor 650 is in the range at 4.2 L. Personally would skip the Scrambler if it goes above 4 L, it just isn't worth that much. Not to mention the accessories won't be cheap either.

To me that sounds like than ex-showroom closer to 2.9-3 L, since RTO is about 30-35k or so and insurance another 22-25k.

Re: Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X unveiled

I would love to have this since I am in love with Triumph.
What would you recommend for 6 feet rider. I really like Speed 400 than the X but then I am not sure it will fit my size.
Also what could help in terms of a navigation accessory on these bikes?

Thanks in advance

It's not possible to mistakenly start ANY modern bike in gear without pressing the Clutch, not even the Splendor will allow you to do that. What Triumph does is that it insists you pull in the Clutch EVEN WHEN THE BIKE IS IN NEUTRAL with that big, conspicuous Green 'N' indicator glowing, before you can start the bike. Crazy Nanny!

Motobob is about 5'9", and he was able to flat foot the Speed 400 more or less. I'd use an FZ-S or FZ-25 as a height comparison, or even the Scram 411. If that's comfy, then go for the speed. The only real comparison in height to the Scrambler is the Duke 390 or the ADV 390, with the ADV being a little higher. Try those and decide, plus of course if your use is mainly city or touring.

For navigation, a good phone mount is probably your best option.

Mahindra Mojo had this feature and I am sure many other bikes in the segment and above will be having the same feature wherein you need to use the clutch even when the bike is in Neutral. Neutral or not, you always use clutch for starting the bike. I do not see a reason to make a fuss about this feature, what is the problem here? Are we too lazy to pull in the clutch every time we want to start the bike? I see absolutely no issue in this feature especially once you get used to it, you will not mind it at all. By the way, as pointed out earlier all modern manual cars come with this exact feature.

Edit: Consider this scenario wherein you or someone (kids) accidentally press the starter button which would crank the engine for no reason causing unnecessary fuel burn, load on battery etc. So this is a super useful feature IMHO.
