Rumour: Bajaj-Triumph bikes to get all-new 400cc engine

The Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X have been unveiled. Please continue the discussion on the new thread.

Bajaj Auto and Triumph have partnered to develop new mid-capacity bikes for emerging markets, the first of which will debut on June 27. A new report sheds more light on the engine that will power the new bikes.

Rumour: Bajaj-Triumph bikes to get all-new 400cc engine-download-96.jpg

It is said that the upcoming Bajaj-Triumph bikes are likely to use a brand-new 400cc, single-cylinder engine. It has been developed from the ground up and will not share anything with existing or future KTM powertrains.

Another feature that should give the Bajaj-Triumph products an edge over rival Royal Enfield is that the larger capacity engine would be liquid-cooled and is expected to be more powerful than Royal Enfield's 350cc offerings.

Bajaj-Triumph is likely to offer two versions of its upcoming mid-capacity bike. These include a stylish roadster and rugged scrambler, both of which, are expected to be unveiled next month.

Royal Enfield's 350 is no real benchmark in terms of power figures or performance. They are not selling because of those factors, there is an emotional quotient at play.

I am sure Triumph and Bajaj know that well, and I feel that they would try and identify a unique space, with premium offerings that would act as an affordable gateway to experience the Triumph brand and its engineering.

Re: Rumour: Bajaj-Triumph bikes to get all-new 400cc engine

Royal Enfield only stands as a benchmark because of its popularity. But personally I quite like their long-stroke thumpers. I'm not a huge fan of bikes that deliver their torque at 7000+ rpm, so I guess that's a bias for me. Which is basically the KTMs. But Triumph figures seem to tread between them, slightly closer to the KTMs. My guess is that these will slot into a segment between the Dukes and the ADVs, like a more powerful Scram, perhaps.

Re: Rumour: Bajaj-Triumph bikes to get all-new 400cc engine

Sharing two views
One. Read in one news article that Bajaj Triumph is planning to make two bikes based on same 350-400cc platform, one a Roadster and another a Scrambler. The speculations are the Roadster will be launched this July. Though both bikes are not much different apart from the 19-17 inch wheels in the scrambler as compared to road biased 17-17 in the roadster, we would definitely love to see the scrambler unveiled on 5th as well.
Second. In all the spy shots of the test mules of the scrambler, the soft luggage is mounted on the left side. Isn't there enough space between the exhaust and the seat top to accommodate a saddlebag?

For some reason we hold this perception bias. While there is an emotional quotient at play, RE bikes are if not the best, atleast at par with what competition is dishing out. Infact they are also extremely well priced for what they offer and that is the reason RE is burning up the sales charts. Besides, if we notice the global reviews, it's hard to miss the acceptance for their bikes in export markets as well. Emotional quotient can probably keep RE afloat, won't help them with sales like they have been doing in last 4-5years.

But yeah - Triumph makes.some truly desirable bikes and Bajaj manufacturer KTM so it's a good match.

Most manufacturers are trying to dodge RE and not take it head on and failing. What they forget is RE makes good, simple and desirable bikes and prices them well. Add R&D to improve their platforms. That's their mantra - honestly I don't see anything additional except for marketing spend.

Premium brands are trying to create a space above with premium pricing assuming their brands will justify it yet not offering anything truly differentiating or truly premium. This is where I wish someone takes inspiration (not give us Chinese bikes) from Chinese brands like Zontes! Their bikes are loaded, use premium hardware and they truly bring features that you don't expect to see (you need them or not is a different question).

Some are trying in the space below like TVS but that's so crowded. Plus they again have a problem of not being able to offer anything differentiating. They launched Ronin! I think BMW hit a jackpot here by keeping the GS310 for themselves and giving away the 310R to TVS.

So two strong options to succeed - launch something truly different and/or based on your Heritage / global portfolio. Or launch a decent ADV!

I hope the T-B launch is based on their Bonnie range, the fit-n-finish screams T and not B, it has that amazing bonnie low-end, it is priced really well.

Does this mean Bajaj gives up on the Dominanr? More than RE, this bike could cannibalise whatever remaining sales Bajajs previous RE rivalling model had.

My friends are struggling (regarding quality) with RE's new launches like the 650 Super meteor and Interceptor. The service is either a 'hit or miss' in Bengaluru

And also with the ignorant attitude of RE and its dealership's. Imagine waiting over 100 days for a pillion back rest + so called RSA mechanic who cannot recognize the bike, he has come to repair.

This is the first time I have heard something regarding the quality issues of Meteor or Super Meteor. In fact hardly any time since the bike has launched. Can u please elaborate what quality issues your friends are facing?
Moreover with Interceptor being updated with alloy wheels and new switchgear, things were supposed to improve on that front also.
Such information needs to be shared in detail because lot of people are putting in their hard earned money on these so-called premium offerings and it is always better to make an informed decision.

Sebring, these issues should be discussed on the forum for everyone’s benefit. Please post and start the discussion here and then request our moderators to move the discussion over to a new thread. The thread title may read “Quality Issues with Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 and Interceptor”.

Thank you.

Cheers

Re: Rumour: Bajaj-Triumph bikes to get all-new 400cc engine

I was in the RE group before I moved overseas and one guy had reported ABS issues, brake early wear while another had mentioned Engine knocking in his 650. Both bikes were in service but then it's individual bikes facing different issues. Few members had opined back then, that 'buying the first lot was not a bright idea'. That's as much as I remember

I believe a youtube check also helps to some extent on quality issues. One guy allegedly had issue of his supermeteor 650 pulling to the right since day one. He has sent a legal notice according to the video.
