Auxiliary / Fog lights for Motorcycles

I have been a happy owner(second) of a Blue and Black 2015 BSIII Pulsar 200 NS and have used it extensively, it has given me great value and much pleasure.

I have used it to tour Himachal and Uttarakhand but mainly use it in Chandigarh and the bike has proved to be a great all rounder.

I wish to install a auxiliary lighting setup on my bike. (Fog lights)
It is necessary as the stock system fails me in mountains where I often visit.

I searched on Team BHP but could not find any Auxiliary lighting thread for Motorcycles. Being a novice in this world I humbly request the experienced Team BHP-ians to shed some light on this matter.

Please provide intensive and extensive knowledge on this subject matter.
Some questions which may serve reference as on what lines the knowledge is expected:

1.) How does the wattage, ampere and volt factor in the decision process of choosing the lights.

a). A bit of practical knowledge about these
terms and how/if they affect the vision
quality.

b). Does a greater measurement
(watt/ampere/volt) directly affect the
performance (intensity/spread/penetration)of
lights.

2.) Relationship between requirements of headlight , battery and auxiliary light.

a). Can a mismatch create problems?

b). How to balance these systems?

3.) Improvements in the electrical system (change of stock wiring and such)

a). Should the electrical system be left stock
or should it be modified (provided a
modified improvement can accommodate
better auxiliary lights and the value for
money factor is high.)

b). How to find a auxiliary light that suits
the electrical system of your bike.

4.) Getting a bigger battery than what is mentioned in Service Manual. Recommended?
(Pros and Cons)

a). Does a more powerful battery affect the
electrical system? How?

b). How much of a bigger battery with respect
to the stock battery can be installed
without causing none (or minimal) strain
on the stock electrical system.

c). Will anything change in this equation
when a auxiliary light is added?

d). How to balance battery, headlight and
auxiliary lightning.

5). Please recommend AUX lights(brands and models) and where to purchase them(kindly list some verified online stores)

6). How to integrate the Auxiliary system in bike?

7.) Anything 200 NS specific.

Any knowledge/ experience is much appreciated!

Some specifications of 200 NS:-

Headlight: 55/60 W
Battery: 8Ah 12 Volt

Thanks!

Below 2 threads should help you get started
Auto Lighting thread : Post all queries about automobile lighting here
Comprehensive guide to LED Headlight upgrades

Motorcycle or car or truck or even Earth mover, the principles remain the same as the basic principles are AC, DC & measurement unit is in wattage

Just one point, since you use the bike primarily in Chandigarh, you can get pulled up by cops repeatedly for the aux lights.

Re: Auxiliary / Fog lights for Motorcycles

Since you want to use this bike in the mountains, I would recommend not to install aux lights as the cops in Himachal take a very dim view of aux lights in the hills. I have personally faced this issue riding towards palampur and Shimla etc and have been forced to cover the aux lights with covers while riding in the hills on my fat boy. I would recommend upgrading your headlight assy itself.

Re: Auxiliary / Fog lights for Motorcycles

Here is how I Installed aux lights in my motor cycle. They have two LEDs , one while and one yellow, and can be used depending on the need (highway or fog)
They draw less than 1A each, so not much extra load on electrical system.

controlled via a switch ( yellow or white)

if you choose LEDs over halogens, the additional load can be managed well. If your motorcycle has rear brake/running halogen bulbs, change them too to compensate for additonal power requirements due to aux lights.

Hello,
:-)
Is the throw sufficient from that angle, seems down.
Could you please tell the name of the product and if they are available online and where?

P.S:- That setup looks awesome!

I cant comment on throw, as sufficient for me may not be sufficient for you.

I want to experiment first with a cheap one, wire it up, learn from it and later upgrade to a good reputable light on same wiring. Its been 18 months and this light is still holding

I purchased it from Aliexpress. search for "Led Fog for Motorcycle Spotlights White Yellow" and there will be many listings. You may find similar ones in ebay or amazon.

I made the brackets to attach to front fork myself.

If you can head to Karol Bagh, Delhi then you will find hundreds of shops selling Led auxiliary lights for 2-wheelers. If you can't go, search youtube for led lights for bikes, you will get many videos with contacts and offerings. HJG is a Chinese brand which is top selling with many options, You can look for the yellow/ white colour, or different beam patterns which you need. Got one pair myself from one such vendor.

Speed 400 Auxiliary Lights

I've recently purchased a Speed 400 and I'm planning on installing a set of Auxiliary lights on the bike, but I'm confused as to which one should I purchase.
Can I have some recommendations on which one to buy?

What are the options you are looking at and what kind of budgets you have? FYI there are models starting at say 5k going all the way to a lakh plus

But reasonable ones with good reviews are HJG and slightly more expensive but better ones Goldrunways. Then you have Denali and Clearwaters of the world if you have a big budget.

HJG, Maddog and Vaishnu are the lights available on the budget end. If you are buying lights from HJG, I'd still recommend that you get the harness and switch from Maddog. You can pick up the entire set (Lights, Harness, Clamps, Switch) from these companies for under 15k on the higher end.

If your budget allows for more than that, then you have Lights from Denali, Baja Designs, Motorfans, Motovanguard and Clearwater. However, most people won't need this. Pick and choose based on your use case. Also, choose wattage based on the alternator capacity on your motorcycle. Keep a buffer of 50W below the peak alternator output to prevent extra drain on the battery.

Cheers

Yeah in a budget of 5k-12k would do! Also, I got to know of Maddog. Any idea how are those?

I have used the Maddog Scout X. Initially, I felt it was adequate. That feeling quickly disappeared out on the 4 lane highway. Especially, when you have someone coming opposite with high beams on. I'm not going into how you should ride but just talking about the efficacy of the lights.

The caveat with lights really is, almost no amount of lights will make it feel like sunshine when you're riding at night. But there's still a line that can be drawn with decent lights that make you comfortable at your personal cruising speeds.

For me, the Motorfans L6Rv2 works well. I haven't found the need to add more lights. Although I do have a set of Scout X on my bike just because I was lazy to remove the wiring.
So now, I use the Scout X to be visible myself. I use the Motorfans when the road is dark and there aren't too many vehicles about.
When I purchased it, the Scout X costed a total of 9k including wiring and switch and filters. The Motorfans costed 17k all inclusive again. If I had to fit a set of lights on another vehicle that I would take touring, I would get another set of Motorfans, this time, the L6Rv3 instead of the v2.

FYI, I have never heard anyone complaining about Baja Designs Squadron Sport (~25k) or the Squadron Pro (~40k).

Note, there is a L7v3 which retails at ~35k. Have read good reviews about those too.

All said, if you're looking at it as a one time investment, which you can then shift from bike to bike as you upgrade, spend good money and get the best you can. It pays back quite well in terms of mental peace and comfort riding in the dark.

Re: Auxiliary / Fog lights for Motorcycles

Is Auxiliary lights still legal, with or without the guidelines. In Delhi, Himachal, and Uttarakhand I heard you will be pulled over for a set of lights.

How is the long term feedback on Vaishnu headlights? Am considering one for my Xpulse and one for my Thunderbird.
