February 2023: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only bikes that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: February 2023: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

  • First time CB Unicorn has disappeared from the charts after hoovering around 12th position on an average in last 6 months
  • HMSI for the first time, since Feb 2022, has falled to lowest possible market share of 20.1% {fourth lowest in in May 2022 at 25.6%, third lowest in January 2023 at 23.49% & second lowest in Dec 2022 at 22.31}. The only pillar supporting HMSI is still the old Activa which is still growing at 7%!!
  • Fun fact: How many would believe that Activa's sale is equal to all scooters sold by Piaggio + Suzuki + TVS + Yamaha? And the entire sales of HMSI scooters are ~5.4% more than all fossil fuel scooters sold by all other manufacturers!!
  • HMSI has no sales recorded in Africa Twin, CBR 1000R, CB500, dwindled sales with CB 300R, CB 200X, CB 500, CBR 650F {surprisingly Goldwing is making atleast 1 sale a month consistently}
  • Kawasaki, India's #1 premium motorcycle, with such a wide models, they sold nothing in KLX series (3 models), Versys 300, Z1000, Z250 & ZX-6R, hardly anything in KX series (3 models), should rethink on the sales of such models
  • The newer models, especially with alloy wheels in 650 twins have come just about the right time should be able to boost some sales which otherwise is still doing pretty good & as usual leading the middle weight segment in sales
  • Surprisingly Ather 450+ numbers are not seen at all or perhaps there's no data. Ola as a manufactuer, perhaps hasn't disclosed their numbers while iQube is silently climbing up the chart

Thanks

Aditya

The KLX series are not road legal bikes so the number of customers who would actually be interested in a bike that you can only ride off road at an extremely high price will be negligible. AFAIK those bikes are imported directly as CBU units based on order so they are simply there on the portfolio though Kawasaki aren't actually pushing for those bikes given they can't be ridden on the road.

The Versys 300, Z1000, Z250 and ZX-6R have been discontinued for a few years now so they ideally should be deleted from the list.

The Splendor.
It never ceases to amaze me that even after all these years, the Hero Splendor sells more than two and a half lakh units PER MONTH on an average.
It is now, what, more than 35 years old? (I mean it started its life as the Hero Honda CD 100 right?).
Anybody knows any other international scooter or motorbike model that is selling in numbers like this?
I am sure this is a case study now in Business Schools on brand equity and product management!

I just dont understand the existence of the KTM 125 platform. The brand's flagship 390 platform sells more than their entry level offering. I wish KTM gets rid of the 125's in India, absolutely senseless positioning and grossly overpriced.

Sir, Splendor's lineage started 10 years after CD100, i.e. 1994 (CD 100 in 1984) & I'm with you marveling at the success of Splendor, not even CD100 or even the great fanbase models {Rx, Jawa etc} has such a long running product line. Perhaps we could add RE, HD, Triumph {they closed in between, so not sure if they qualify} are certainly bound to have atleast one long running model.

Re: February 2023: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

The Splendor sales of over 2.6 lac per month is the reason Hero is ok with not launching better bikes in the 160 and 200cc segment. Not even the Shine or Activa is close to the Splendor sales.

TVS raider seems to be selling in good numbers, while no report for the Ronin. The 3 digit RR310 sales are reported (which are higher than Gixxer 250) but not for the Ronin. Looks like the unscripted is not working in their favour.

Bajaj is very interesting. The relaunched 220 has done almost 5k sales in Feb, while the 250 series sales are questionable.

One thing though, the Avenger and Pulsar 180 are discontinued long ago, but still in the list? how accurate are these numbers? Same with the Hero Xtreme 200R.

In electric, iCube has sold more than the Ather in February. It is becoming popular. I am spotting many new iCubes, both normal and S version on the road. They need to hurry up with the ST variant.

Does anyone know about the BMW Motorrad Sales? Especially the three 310cc bikes.

Yamaha should bring the XSR155 at a good price, maybe same as the MT15. Most will prefer it over the Ronin who want a Retro bike around 2 Lac, but do not want the Hunter 350.

When your 18 year old wants a KTM, but is in-experienced to handle a 250/390; you buy him a 125.

Then, Yamaha should also stop FZ25. Its been in the deathbed for years!

Despite the 7,000 premium and no additional equipment on offer (case in point the single channel ABS) the relaunch of Pulsar 220 looks to be paying off for Bajaj which shows that they are doing their market research well because people have been asking about it BUT less than expected performance of AS 200 earlier and Now new 250 twins might also be a matter of introspection for Bajaj. They have tried to shelve 220 a couple of times now but the bike simply refuses to die.

Heck, even i might get it for the nostalgia factor.

Even assuming Hero makes just 5k profit per unit, think how much money they must be making a year from this cash cow!

I think the same engine is used in Activa as well.
