Hope you guys found the above information useful.
Now it's time for me to introduce you to my 1984 Ind Suzuki AX100. A very good friend of mine had come down from Canada after a long time. Since the weather was very pleasant in Feb, we would catch up every evening for a walk around our neighbourhood. Those who know me, would know that I have a wandering eye always on the lookout for some interesting car or bike. On one such walk, I noticed a blue colored motorcycle (partially covered) parked in a building. Went in and checked with the security guard who informed me that the blue RX100 is for sale. My reaction was like "Dude, thats not a RX 100, thats a Suzuki AX100". While I was checking whatever I could see through the cover, he asked me to take off the cover and have a good look at the bike.
Frankly speaking, I have never seen an AX100 up close - and I always thought that it was very similar to the Yamaha RX100 and the KB100. But if infact felt much smaller in length and a tad shorter in height. I have mostly seen the and Suzuki in the red/orange shade - Which distinctly identifies it es a Ind Suzuki.
Anyways I give the security guard my contact number to pass it on to the owner. Waited for a day for a call back and decided to go back there and check it out again. Only to reach there and be greeted by an old friend of mine who had already guessed that the person who left his contact would be none other than me. we started discussing our Childhood days and then moved on to crack the deal. So basically he had brought this from the first owner woo oresided in the same building a few years ago. But since the lockdown, the bike was just lying unused, and hence he had decided to letit go.
My search came to an end and I decided to buy it. Checked the paper work and everything was in order. FC was active and due to be renewed in Nov 2023. Insurance and PUC had expired but thet wasnt a big deal.
The Motorcycle
What really impressed was that this bike was very much original - except obviously for the headlight. I started reading and researching on the Suzuki AX 100 and that's where I came across Anjans article on the Suzuki AX100. The bike in his article was a rare import (probably just 3 in the country) and it came with all Japanese parts including the speedometer which was calibrated in mph (primary) and kmph (Secondary). I was really very excited and started digging further into the history of the AX100 in India. then I came across Dhabhar Sir's article, which changed may excitement to confusion. Here is what I posted on the thread.

I have been reading and watching a lot of videos of the AX100 since a month now and I do have a lot of questions. And I am glad you are here , since you could share some more knowledge and probably some old print advertisements.
So here goes my findings from what I have gathered on the Internet and my knowledge through the years.
The first batch of Suzuki AX100's were brought into the country in 1983. This batch was only meant as display / dealer bikes - since Suzuki had not started manufacturing the bike here. These bikes had the following features : - Suzuki badging everywhere (tank, speedometer, engine, helmet lock) - no mention of IND or TVS anywhere.
- Odometer calibrated in mph.
- Speedometer showing mph (primary) and kmph (secondary)
There above details were exclusive to the Suzuki AX100 only, but post homologation and collaboration with TVS in 1984, these were omitted in the Ind Suzuki AX100.
The below parts from the Suzuki AX100 continued to be offered in the Ind Suzuki AX100 though. - Metal Indicators with indicator lens "Made in Japan"
- Suzuki engraved Helmet Lock "Made in Japan"
- Aluminum Switch gears and levers.
In 1988, when the Ind Suzuki was re-badged as a TVS-Suzuki AX100, it omitted all the above features except for the aluminum switchgear.
So in short:
Based on my findings, now here are my questions? - Was the first batch a CBU or a CKD? Is there a way to identify it through the Chassis number?
- How many CBU / CKD bikes were imported by TVS Suzuki? Based on your interaction with Arvind Reddy, would you have more details of the other CKD/CBU bikes?
- Although the initial batch was imported in 1983 - I have never come across a single Suzuki AX100 registered in 1983.
- Could this be, because these bikes could not be sold until Suzuki had homologated the bikes in India? AFAIK the homologation process was completed in mid 1984 post which deliveries commenced in September that year. Thats when these CBU/CKD bikes were sold?
- Dhabhar Sir's bike is Sep 1984 registered and has an Ind Suzuki badging - but has the mph speedometer. Could this bike have been rebadged from a Suzuki to an Ind Suzuki?
- Arvinds bike is a Nov 1984 registered Suzuki AX100 with the Suzuki badge and the mph/kmph speedometer.
Apologies for so many questions - the reason is I am asking is to understand the history of my Suzuki AX100. Your page piqued my interest and since then I have been trying to gather more information of my bike.
Registered on Sep 1984.
Mumbai MAJ registration.
Going by the parts, its a genuine Suzuki AX100. |
So basically I had missed the part that mentioned the gear Indicator. All my doubts were cleared when I started reading the comments section on the YouTube video posted above. To be frank, I was a bit disappointed that mine was not the rave imported one. But I was more happy that I could arrive at a conclusion that my AX 100 is an Ind Suzuki and not a Suzuki. It was Iteration 2, the Limited Edition Ind Suzuki Ax100 - Similar in all ways to the dealer edition (except for the gear indicator).
As you can see in the pics, the AX 100 does show signs of wear and tear and a lot of neglect too. My plan was to completely restore it to its original look. All this while I was hunting tor original Suzuki tank monograms (which are hard to come by). But I can now sniff my focus to the Ind Suzuki ones. The remaining pants are all original and Japanese made :
- Metal Indicators with Japanese Lens
- Suzuki engine covers
- Suzuki engine
- Japanese Carburetor
- Suzuki Helmet lock
The way Forward
Since most of the stuff on the bike is already original, I only have to focus on the parts that are either damaged or missing.
The damaged /neglected parts that need replacement.
- Headlight - current one looks like that of an RX 100. will try to source a new or replacement part.
- Tail light - is a local one and needs to be replaced.
- Front and rear mudguard - damaged and will have to be replaced
- Tank has some patchwork - so will have to check for leakages
- Chain Guard is missing - wo will need to source a new one.
The original parts that need to be painted / buffed
- The engine and Carburetor
- Aluminium switchgear
- Indicators and Lens
- Crash guard And saree guard
Right now I am just focussing on sourcing parts from either India or US. Ali Express too has parts since the AX100 was sold there too. But shipping to India is not possible after the ban.
So hoping for the best now as I begin another restoration soon. This will mostly be in parallel with the Hero Honda Street for which I am awaiting parts. It's an exciting race for me
Oh and yes, here is a pic of my 1984 Ind Suzuki AX 100.
