Activa has 2 engines - 110 & 125; Activa 110 was the one that succeeded while in 125 segment Access always lead the show, add to that TVS that has many first in segment features. In the 125 segment, Activa has the lowest BHP per tonne (
just above Jupiter 125, but Jupiter 125 has impressive features & has best torque per tonne) & somewhere mid range in torque per tonne out of all the 125 segment fossil fueled scooters in the market today. Activa 125 doesn't have impressive FE (
like Yamaha or Access), weighs too much (
highest in the segment), almost no features (
like NTorq or Jupiter) & even from the price point, they cost barely less than Yamaha.
In the 110 segment, yes Activa is preferred, but then their best bread & butter is the Moto-scooter Dio, which is still the best seller today just because of the same 110 cc engine & features, costs less than Activa, has more appeal & all the more the style preferred by youngsters. In a medium dense traffic, no matter R15, KTM, C250R or MT03, they're as good as Dio & costs fraction of those motorcycles.
Despite having many technology leads, Honda is still basking on their brand; they seriously needs some fresh ideas otherwise for sure Yamaha (
many times I'm very surprised as how Yamaha concentrates on fewer products & stands strong); even their unappealing style FZx is selling in decent numbers while R15, MT15, Fascino, RayZR & standard FZ are selling in good numbers. Sorry got carried away, back to scooters.
Even if one observes HMSI website, Activa is marketed as "
Runs on Respect" (
many times Son & I make fun of the slogan stating, we only need to ojigi to Activa & then the scooter has full tank by magic
). Grazia, less said better. The only thing Honda is banking still is, Activa has full metal body compared to plastic body on Yamaha & Suzuki, while TVS follows a middle path stating they've metal parts on impact area (
unbelievable), while Suzuki also claims so, but much unlike TVS. But times from mid 2000 has moved on due to wide spread knowledge & information (
thanks to forums like TBhp, PowerDrift, xBhp, Autocar, Bike India, Auto Toda etc); today very few consumer expect their vehicle to last 15 years; even if the vehicle is sparingly used it's is damaged right at parking or very easily on the road (
thanks to the lenient enforcement law) & the cost of fixing plastics are much easier than metal body.
What TVS offers is load of features & best VFM; Yamaha offers technology, focus (men & lady riders), FE & lightest 125cc scooter in the market (less than even prominent 110cc scooters as well); Suzuki offers FE, super comfort & serving the purpose of a scooter; Aprilia & Vespa cater to premium segment; Hero is near identical to what Honda offers, their value proposition being cost less than HMSI (
and yet additional feature better than Honda). What's Honda's value proposition today?
Smart-Key & anti-theft system!! Fuel efficient...tires?? Despite launching the industry first silent-start system (
125 cc segment), it's Yamaha who banked on the similar technology with their scooters. I think all these put together is catching up with poor sales of Activa these days.
Edit - Suzuki has already updated silent-start in Burgman & it's only a question of time the feature to appear in Access 125; if I'm not wrong, except Honda, every other scooter is enabled with Bluetooth & mobile connectivity!!
