The latest fire broke out late on Monday in a hotel basement housing the showroom with some two dozen electric scooters in the southern city of Secunderabad, police said. It had been brought under control and an investigation had been launched, they said.

Most of the dead were occupants of the hotel, which was engulfed by smoke.

We don't know if it started because of overcharging and then spread or whether it started elsewhere. That is still being established

Scooters of the Greater Noida-based Gemopai Electric are said to be involved in the deadly fire at a Secunderabad showroom. The company is a joint venture between Delhi-based Goreen E Mobility and China-based electric vehicle manufacturer Opai Electric.

Re: Electric scooters catching fire in India

This incident again is an indication on how low we keep our fire safety priorities. Fire do happen everywhere yet this particular incident would not be this worse if appropriate measures were in place. Hotels, big shop and even industrial building have fire safety systems just for the sake of it. Mostly are not meeting the norms and did not work in real world scenarios.

Just to share the experience, I am involved right now in building a greenfield manufacturing facility. We are working with the FM Global standards for fire safety. The Fire safety requirements of MIDC are quite good (May be one of the best in India) but the FM global standards are at a different level altogether. FM implementation are costlier but it shows how big these standard see the risks of fire and aftermath of that specially the loss of life.

When will the govt wake up and put certain standards on electric vehicles. Most of the vehicles in our market are kits which are pretty sub standard and in a couple of years time we will have a disposing problem too. Ask any one in the electric industry and they know why batteries combust. One of them being to do with over charging which causes a bulge and terrible BMS systems.

Our countries fire safety especially in older construction is laughable. An outright fire hazard and a tonne of osha violations. Had stayed in a old mill town in the east coast of US and a couple of fire incidents where girls under 18 working in the mills got killed as they didnt have a fire escape made this mandatory that it is common to see it across the country. Doors open outwards as anyone escaping will push the door open, emergency fire exit stairs and what not.

Even our new highrises do not follow this strictly and its just one incident away from us creating a ruckus for a couple of days and then forget about it in a weeks time! Our laws need to hold people guilty and quickly rather then drag this out.

Re: Electric scooters catching fire in India

Hate to say that, most likely six people died in burning agony due to lax safety standards, ignorance and not following procedures. Or most likely, there were no fire exits.

We don't have millions of e-cars, like the US, which have much bigger batteries and we already may be having more deaths in charging related incidents.

Government does not know/care, people are ignorant, just like they are while driving and innocent lives lost.

Some time back, our employer had rented a building in HYD where there was just one access to stairs, no fire exit via stairs (multi-storied bldg). The building felt like a kind of trap. I brought this to attention of my boss and he looked at me as if I am making an issue of nothing. That gave me an idea of pervasive ignorance in mindset of people of this country, spanning across every class!

Re: Fire at Electric Scooter showroom kills 8

This incident has really got me worried about the safety of parking electric cars and bikes on the basement of apartments. The report says most people who perished in this accident due to toxic smoke inhalation and the incident happened at night! Scary to think of such a scenario in an apartment complex!

This is what was discussed in the past.

https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/elect...omponents.html (Govt. to issue standards for EV batteries & components)

Nothing anywhere happens in an instant or overnight. Even implementation of the rules.

Regulations apart, If buying populace skips these cheaper models and goes for the established brands, it can help push for demand for better quality vehicles. Then again, Ola isnt a cheap chinese rebadged model either.

Govt. to probe Secunderabad EV fire that killed 8

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has launched an investigation into the e-scooter showroom fire that left 8 people dead and several injured.

A short circuit seems to be the likely cause of the fire. However, reports suggest that the ground floor, where the fire appears to have started also housed gas cylinders and a generator. The government will send a team of experts for further investigation after the police have filed their preliminary findings.

Earlier this week, a fire broke out at the Gemopai Electric Scooters showroom in Secunderabad. The smoke from the fire soon spread to the upper floors that house the Ruby Pride Hotel.

8 people died due to asphyxiation and several others were injured. Reports suggest that four people have already been arrested.
