July 2022: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only bikes that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: July 2022: Indian Motorcycle & Scooter Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for sharing the information

Few points from my side:
1. Honda is too close to Hero!

2. Royal Enfield is dispatching similar to Yamaha and Suzuki on an average. This is when their smallest engine bike is 350cc. Looks like Yamaha/Suzuki will be hit by Hunter soon. Kudos to them.
Yamaha is neither capitalising on commuter segment nor bringing its premium products.

3. Just a glance at Activa sales figure and you understand why Honda doesn’t care when we crib about price being hiked for CBR/CB 650R series.

4. Why isnt Gixxer 250 selling in decent numbers? It looks million bucks and has all the typical Japanese traits.

Surprised that TVS Ronin isn't in the list. Does it mean it didn't sell 500 units in Aug?

On the subject of the Gixxer 250, In my personal opinion, it's very uninspiring to ride. The 150 is way more fun, light hearted and fizzy. But I agree that in the ecstar livery the bike looks amazing.

I am a 1st gen BS4 Gixxer 155 owner. The design in 2nd gen is a huge flop for suzuki. I would have not gone for the 2nd gen even if there was an option purely based on looks. The Suzuki quirkiness is missing and the bike looks bland and the colour options are even more boring.
And it reflects in sales too, 1st gen Gixxer 150 was doing >5000 every month, now the Gixxer 150 hovers from 100 - 1500 every month which is pretty bad. And Gixxer 250 looking exactly like it's 150 cc sibling is definitely not helping it

Other than the bland looks, Gixxer 250 has the best handling in segment and is a hoot to ride in twisties. It is one of the fastest accelerating bikes in segment with a gem of an engine which never seems to run out of breath.

Yamaha is really close to Suzuki. If it launches 2-3 premium products and maybe 1-2 products for the average commuter then I think it can surpass Suzuki in market share.

Suzuki has slowly and steadily grown over the last 5 years. A few years back Suzuki was way below Yamaha in Sales. Suzuki has cleverly targeted the Scooter segment and still ruling the 125cc segment with new launches like Avenis, which Yamaha is yet to crack despite being the senior in the market. This is primarily due to its low mileage image from RX100 days which is still there in tier2/tier3 cities.
Now Yamaha is just doing catching up. Aggressive marketing in tier2/tier3 cities and rural areas ( I have seen this in person) is what is driving their increase in FZ15 and MT/R15 sales.
If Suzuki launches updated 3rd gen Gixxer and GSXR150 with a marketing campaign directly targeting FZ and R15 they can easily pull in a good chunk FZ/R15 buyers. But marketing is the Achilles heel of Suzuki.
