Jupiter (110) user here, for past 3 years in Bangalore traffic. Having used both Jupiter and Access, I can claim that Jupiter has better suspension helpful with potholes and speed-brakers. Access has marginally better pickup, but that hasn't bothered me.
I service my Jupiter at a local mechanic and never faced any reliability issue.
If you can deal with the ugly looks and poor headlight of Jupiter, it's better in most aspects. Make sure to get the disk brake version, though, and change the stock tyres.

Re: Which 125cc Scooter for 1 - 1.25 lakh rupees?

Reviving an old thread in the quest for some answers; I am in the market for a scooter and have zeroed in on the Yamaha Ray. However the dealership has no test drive examples of the base drum brake variant and while I do have some experience with scooters, they are all from my childhood with a Kinetic Honda and 2002 1st gen Activa so I have not owned any scooters in a while and have no idea if disc brakes are absolutely required on these things. The Ray weighs in a 99kgs with fuel so I am hoping members with a long standing ownership experience of multiple scooters, can help me figure out whether disc brakes are required or whether drum brakes will suffice.

Thanks in advance.

Discs are not required if a scooter is ridden like a scooter. The drum brakes are more than sufficient for city speeds and conditions.

It's lighter than many other motorcycles. it doesn't need as much braking power to stop. So, for regular riding, drum brakes should work fine.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions I am leaning towards the base variant because I felt like the drum brakes ought to offer enough stopping power for a scooty and I am partial towards the analogue dial that comes only in the base variant although the Yamaha blue paint job that extends onto the rims only comes in the disc brake variant

I was also wondering what long term maintenance differences could I expect by going for the base drum variant? I have to admit a huge reason I am considering it is because scooty costs have risen so much in the last 5 years so I would like to save whatever I can after having to spend over a lac on such a thing. Will I save any money in the long run as well or does maintaining drum brakes cost as much as discs (pads + rotors)? I am looking at keeping the scooter for atleast a decade so I want to take everything into consideration before buying considering the regret I already feel for having not bought a scooter back in 2016/17

Long-term maintenance costs might be lower compared to disc brakes. Maintenance for drum brakes generally involves replacing brake shoes, which is low compared to replacing disc brake pads and rotors.

It seems you appreciate the analog dial featured in the drum brake version,

While also being drawn to the blue rim paint job exclusive to the disc variant. Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on your personal preferences. If you prioritize the analog system, the drum brake version would be suitable. vice vera, if you're particularly fond of the blue rim paint, opting for the disc version would be more fitting.

If you really like the blue rim paint and don't mind spending a bit more money, go for it. It's worth it to have something you really admire. It's better to treat yourself to something you love than to save a little money and wish you had what others have.
