Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

Hello Bhpians. I own a Honda CB350 H’ness bought in June 2020 with 5500kms under the clock. It’s running perfectly. Due to a job opportunity I have to move to Bangalore for few years. I am definitely going to need a vehicle in Bangalore so would like to take my bike with me. But from what I have read is that I can only use my bike for few months before I will have re-register it in Karnataka which is going to cost a substantial amount. Also I found that it’s very difficult to get refund for road tax from my current state. I don’t want to heckled by the cops in Bangalore on frequent basis for out of state registration number. So either I sell my bike and buy a new one in Bangalore or move the current one to Bangalore and go through re-registration process and then sell it there in few years. Both options have pros and cons. What are your thoughts on this?

Your bike is too new to be sold and to lose that differential price, on top of which you will have to spend on another bike once you move.

Suggest to bring it over. Check for options to pay annual tax. If you find it difficult to do that yourself, Bangalore members can give you contacts of people who can do it for you.

Thanks @condor.
Is it possible to pay the road tax annually in Karnataka? I can take that option to stay legal.

Any Bangaloreans here can provide some insights?

Have been living here with a TN registered bike for about 8 months so can understand your query.

Official rules allow 11 month period before legally you need to get the registration done. I got the bike transferred via train (parcel) so I have an official 'parchi' (/paper) that serves as a proof of the bike being brought into the city recently. Have been stopped twice by cops for different reasons (pillion not wearing helmet, taking a left on a red signal) and both times I was penalized only for that offense. I even showed them my bike documents (having TN details) and there wasn't any questions on the out-of-state number plate.

No plans of transferring the registration as of now (3 year old bike) till the year ends. Also I keep traveling (on it) to Chennai and back so that might be a breather (legally) for me going forward.

My recommendation - get the bike over and use it for about a year. Carry documentation that covers your date of entry (for the vehicle) and you should be safe atleast for a year.

You can bring it here, And pay the local RTO tax. The First 11months it is not required. FYI My first bike(Electra 350) was in Chennai and then Bangalore for the better part of 13 years.

I dont think it is possible to pay annual road tax, that happens only after the vehicle undergoes re-registration i.e 15 yrs. I maybe wrong here.

I think the outstation registered vehicles being an easy target was in the days of the past, these days that's not an issue after a much hullaboo about the same couple of years back.

Getting a road tax refund from home state is a pain. Alternatively you could move out of KA for 15 days or more after the 11 months time frame and then come back with all proof (read PUC, toll receipts of home state) and continue for next 11 months as if you entered recently. This is a loophole taken to advantage by many.

Thanks. How do you pay the local RTO tax? Is that annually? Does it mean you can use your other state vehicle without re-registration in Bangalore?

Thanks. Yes seems initial 11 months should be a non-issue. My home state is Haryana so I am not sure I will be able to make that long trip for the receipts. Will they accept receipts from any other nearby states?

It's a lifetime tax. There is no annual tax(There is a provision for central government employees for a minimal annual fee).

You don't have to re-register in Bangalore, But you can.

Another option is
1. Pay KA road tax.
2. Register in KA.
3. Get the refund of Tax from the original RTO.

Of course receipts from any other state other than KA would be accepted.

However for that extra peace of mind, good to get the road tax paid in KA provided you are in the state for good long period of time (say 3+ years). If its only for a couple of years, then paying road tax in KA would be a waste.

Re: Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

My father re-registered his 11 year old Apache in TN after retiring from his job at Andhra. Yes, it's a task. But not undoable and depends on the connection you have with the bike

You can consider re registration if :

- You have an emotional attachment to it ( 1st bike, gift, etc., )

- The loss is insignificant when compared to the hassle of re registration

- You are not very satisfied with this bike and your sights on another model already

Re: Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

Wasn't there a discussion on TBHP where someone had suggested the following:

Just before your 11 months are over, drive OUT of KA till you cross a toll naka.
Then drive back. Retain the Toll Receipt/ FastTag SMS/Email. For all intents and purposes that's your new date of entry in KA.

The idea is good but has 2 loop holes:

A two wheeler doesn't have to pay toll at the toll plaza.

In case of a car, after fastags became mandatory, anyone can see the log of all the tolls crossed in the past 11 months, via the fastag app. Crossing the nearest one might not be enough .

On the other hand, one can argue the case by producing a fuel bill from an out of state bunk.

Re: Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

I have a contrary opinion on this.

If you are moving on a long term basis. I would suggest to get an NOC, this will buy you a year. At the end of it, you can decide whether to pay KA road tax (lifetime) or not. The road tax receipt is enough to get you through. Re-registration is not mandatory, unless you want to stop being waved down alltogether and you intend to settle in Bangalore.

Unless neighboring states, a DL/UP/HR bike is an easy target, compared to a same license plate 4-wheeler. You simply can't justify that you are riding on highways to DL.

Last 2 years have been quiet due to the pandemic, but this will change once offices open for good. During the peak hassle days, only TN-70 and old TN-24 were left off, since it is right across the border.

Re: Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

I am also moving to Bangalore in near future. I have a 5 year old S-Cross which is running absolutely fine. I feel like with current fuel price, its a sin to sell diesel car. My only complain is manual transmission.

I contemplated a lot on various options. I spoke to lot of friends and colleagues regarding their experience.

Frankly I did not get any encouraging response. From what I understood is that, usually RTO cops stands at some fix location and almost every time pull up out of state cars. Regular traffic cop will not bother you about registration. They will mostly check the other documents & traffic violations.
While RTO cops might let you go without fine most of the time, there is still chance that they might give unnecessary hassle. For example, a colleague of mine was asked to show complete Fastag history to prove he was never in KA before that. RTO might even impound the vehicle and will release only after payment of tax. While these may be rare cases, but I am not a person who like to get in arguments with cops.

In your case, I would suggest to re-register in KA. For bikes I feel tax might not be high like cars.

A better bet would be to visit a neighbouring state like AP or TN and get a PUC done. You can even alternate between them every 6 months
