Yes that works too.

But in case of OP, I am assuming the bike is NCR registered. Cops wouldn't agree if they're shown a PUC from Chittoor or Hosur.

Cars have a little more leeway, since there are lot more chances being a visitor than a resident.

You might get away, by just using the car for your weekend visits than as a daily driver.

Buddy, If you ever plan to get the NOC from your current state and then please do not forget to complete the process of submitting it in a RTO in bangalore. Any delay in completing this process will impact the road worthiness of your bike. Have been in that situation and it impacted me big time and I had to scrap my 2010 Yamaha FZ

Long story short:
I moved to Mumbai to Bangalore in 2012, got a NOC for my bike and didn't initiated the process to re-register/pay local road tax in Bangalore for 2 years. Regular meet-ups with the traffic police with fines and then decided to register the bike in Bangalore.

Surprise, surprise!! Noc is not valid any more need to a new one from Mumbai. Reached out to an agent and he gave another surprise, NOC is already issues, no new NOC will be issued. If at all you get that cancelled by a Bangalore RTO, then a fresh one can be given.

None of the RTO said YES to cancel the old NOC. Tried my luck with another agent in mumbai by sending the original docs (RC, NOC) and he gave it to an officer, who went in-communicado after a few months and that's how i lost my bike's original documents and entered a deadlock stage where in I cant even do anything with the bike.

Gave up everything and scrapped it last week, got the certificate to submit online. Apparently there is an option to de-register your bike. Tried that with a lot of hope and got another surprise waiting for me. I cant do that online since a NOC has been issued.

I have given up on this now and have saved every evidence of the vehicle scrapping to save myself form any problems in future.
I may never choose the option of moving bikes to different states in future and save myself from all this.

If you are moving on a long term basis. I would suggest to get an NOC, this will buy you a year. At the end of it, you can decide whether to pay KA road tax (lifetime) or not. The road tax receipt is enough to get you through. Re-registration is not mandatory, unless you want to stop being waved down alltogether and you intend to settle in Bangalore.

Unless neighboring states, a DL/UP/HR bike is an easy target, compared to a same license plate 4-wheeler. You simply can't justify that you are riding on highways to DL.

Last 2 years have been quiet due to the pandemic, but this will change once offices open for good. During the peak hassle days, only TN-70 and old TN-24 were left off, since it is right across the border.
Will the cops be ok with the road tax paid in Bangalore but having HR number plate? I will most probably be in Bangalore for around 2-3 years but not for longer period (say 4-5 years). I can then bring back my bike to Haryana after 2-3 years and decide to keep or sell. But I wonder if the system will even allow me to pay tax in 2 states on one registration number?

Sorry for silly questions. This is my first time with such situation.

Buddy, last i heard was that there is some stay on this matter, but i know convincing the cops becomes difficult. I think Ninjatalli has a point, keep the Transport paper as evidence and meanwhile check on the road-tax amount, for her Highness it will not be a big amount if they consider the depreciate value, better to pay that and have peace of mind.

Remember a bike rides Toll free on Highways, so No Toll Tickets to escape

Welcome to Bangalore, hope you have a great stay and everlasting memories to take back.

Cheers.

Transfer to another state has two parts:

1. Pay tax in new state
2. Retain or get new number in the new state.

So the fees is also in 2 parts.

However, I am not sure what happens to the tax in HR when you go back - since you have already paid the tax in full there, but you are retaining the number.

Let me check with one person here who works with the RTO offices. I should be able to get clear information from him.

Yes, I had a colleague who was riding his MH-12 bike in Bangalore with KA road tax paid

Actually 3, you forgot refund of road tax from source state. This is a long winding process, which I didn't go through.

Indeed it is 2 separate procedures. Road tax payment is separate and Re-registration is a separate process in itself. I did these 2 procedures little over 6 months apart.

Ok, so I have first-hand experience in this situation. One BHPian brought his HR26 reg bike to Bangalore many years ago and subsequently paid road tax to continue using it in Bangalore. The old number was, however, retained. How this works is, you take NOC from the current RTO and submit it to the concerned RTO in Bangalore, and just pay the tax and not apply for a new number. Due to this, what happened was, his bike was re-registered (yes, you heard that correctly, when you pay tax in a new state, your bike gets re-registered there irrespective of whether you take a new number or not), and he found it to be extremely difficult to sell off the bike.
Therefore, even if you retain the HR number, your bike will no longer remain registered at the HR RTO. You will only have 2 options going forward: either get a KA number (to sell it in KA) or take NOC from KA, pay HR road tax again and re-register it in HR (to sell it in HR).

Some people might tell you that you can just pay tax and continue, but please, please don't do that. Either get a new KA number or just continue riding on your existing HR number. My friend then bought the above-mentioned bike from the BHPian (I was the point of contact in this process) since no one else was willing to even scrap the bike in a hassle-free process. I dealt with all the paperwork, got everything sorted, and then continued using the bike with the HR26 number itself. Now I have paid road tax in KA, but cops don't know that, yet I haven't been stopped even once till date. Hence, continuing with the HR number isn't a bad idea at all. Cops harassing out-of-state vehicles in this city is definitely something that I haven't seen in the past 2 years of me living here.

Regards,
Sayantan.

Re: Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

@Boniver has stated it correctly.

I checked with a person I know who works with the RTO's here. There is no provision for paying annual tax.

You will need to pay KA road tax. This will un-register the vehicle in HR. You could continue with the HR Number, but it will be sensible to get a KA number along with payment of KA road tax.

He also said that transfer is best done within 30 days of the NOC being issued in HR. Post that, there is a fine of 300 rs per month.

In case you want this person's help, do let me know. I will share his contact details.

The followup with the RTO in HR for refund of Road tax must be done separately.

Hence, you would need to decide if you want to:
1. Re-register the bike here. Follow-up for refund of HR Road tax, which will come when it comes. THe effort for follow-up is open question.
2. Do you want to bring it here for a year, take it back and sell it in HR
3. Sell it in HR, and get another one here.
3a. If you do this, you could get a set of BH plates instead of a KA number. This can help you in future.

Thanks. Do I need to bring the NOC with me or I can ride for 11 months, then get NOC from home RTO, pay road tax in Bangalore and re-register? From what I get is that NOC can only be issued once by home RTO and is valid for few months.

I have to move in July so have some time to mull over the options.

BH plates proposition is tempting but I read they are only for defence and govt. employees or private employees with office branches in 4 states.

Don't get it now. Come here, live for a few months and then decide for yourself whether you want to go ahead with the re-registration process or not. Fyi, in my building, I am the only person with a KA bike. Every other bike is from MH, AP, TN, PY, DL, WB etc. No one is ever bothered by the cops as long as they follow all traffic rules.
You can anyway ride for 11 months in Bangalore with your HR plates. In the 12th month, you can ride to nearby TN and get a PUC done and come back. Why an HR bike got PUC done in TN is not their headache, as long as it proves that you haven't stayed in KA for more than 11 months.
If the need for an NOC arises in future, you can always get it when you visit HR during your holidays. You will just need to carry your bike's papers (mainly original RC and xerox of the rest), and a pencil imprint of your bike's chassis number and submit it to your home RTO. They will direct you to get an NOC from the cops etc., but at no stage will they ask to see your bike.

Don't stress, and enjoy your time in Bangalore. I will be leaving this city in mid-June, and moving to NCR by mid-July

Re: Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

I recently changed my MH43 registered FZS(2013 Reg) to Karnataka registration. But I took an expensive path that many here would loath - I went through RTO Agents. I had to consult agents in both the places. One for getting NOC and stuff from MH43 - I spent around ₹5000 there. Then paid KA agent around ₹13000. The advantage was agents took care of all the formalities. I only had to visit RTO only when they asked to personally visit to either sign some form or to get bike inspected at RTO. It took me about 6 months of time. I could have taken the "rebel" route of doing it all by myself. But let me face it, it could have taken me more than 2-3 years to get everything right! I chose to get KA registered mainly for peace of mind. Karnataka is my home state anyway. Hence, that also helped me in deciding to spend that much on my bike to which I have emotional attachment and didn't want to let it go

Re: Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

One other option: Is it possible to change registration from HR xxx to BH xxx ? This can help resolve the issue at hand. .. if done in HR itself. And try getting the refund of the road tax from HR itself.

I totally echo on this thought. If you can get a BH plate, nothing like it else the system is too lame to go through the entire hassle of paying the road tax again just to get bike to a different state.

It’s just better to sell in your current state and get a new one in the new state. You may lose money but you’ll have peace of mind which is priceless. But again if you’re not moving long term and the bike isn’t your daily ride to work and intended for weekend outings only then is it too much of a burden to ride as is with the HR plate? I don’t think so.

Cheers

Re: Moving to Bangalore | Bring my bike along or get a new one?

Do not take an NOC if there is no intention to re-register the vehicle.

Once NOC is issued, the RC status becomes invalid in home state.

Also post issual of NOC, there is a penalty of X amount every month if the vehicle is not registered in destination state.

I have practically gone through this situation & had to shell out ₹15k just for cancellation of that expired NOC in my home state.

Had to go through this, as I was selling my car (14 Years old) in home state & couldn't get a new NOC/NOC cancelled letter from Bangalore RTO (as the 1St NOC was never submitted to Bangalore RTO). The expired NOC was 6+ years old.

Too much of a hassle to re-register our vehicles in another state. The BH series registration should have been made applicable for even old vehicles.

1. Get a PUC certificate just 1-2 days before leaving home state.
2. Insurance renewal also get it done from home state/online
3. Just before the 11-12 month period, travel to other/home state & carry Fuel Slips, Toll/Parking slips etc.
