You are highly overestimating the costs.

Remember its a Bajaj, the only thing it is good at, is being cheap
I agree with you there. I have a similar vintage 180 in my garage which was my son's learner bike. Its very cheap to keep running. In comparison, I also have an equally old Kinetic 4S (my son's first tuition scooty) in my garage, that is very troublesome and difficult to keep in running nick (the juddering auto clutch especially).

I hope this was in jest. Else we can have a situation like Canal Saint-Martin.

However, you forgot to ask him if he knows to swim, so that he can get out of the water after that act.

Re: What to do with a non-runner and >15yr old bike: Sell, scrap, Exchange ?

I believe you may have overestimated the money and effort it needs to get the bike running. Do another inspection yourself or get a trustworthy mechanic to do it and reassess the situation.

First thing to do is, wash the bike to get the dust and grime off it. You'll also be able to inspect and work on it a lot better.

Next thing is to get it to start. Once you get it to start, you'll have a clearer vision for what to do with it.

Once it's in the bare minimum running shape (which by my estimates wont take you more than a couple thousand rupees), you can decide whether to run it yourself, or sell it.

Scrapping it would be a waste. Just tear it down into parts and sell them separately if you have to.

Check if they're really worn out or are still usable. Hard compound tyres can take some weathering and can usually last a long time even in storage.

Fill up air. Once you've filled it up, check the tyres. If the tread depth is okay and there's no huge cracks in the sidewall, the tyres are probably still usable. If the air pressure still holds after 24-48 hours, your tubes are also doing okay.

Chances are, your suspension is in decent enough shape as is. You can just replace the fork oil and seal just for good measure and the front suspension will be serviceable again, not necessarily in top shape, but serviceable. Cost of oil and seals is not much. Even if you want to replace the springs, they're cheap.

Wash the dirt and grime off the rear suspension and inspect it. If the action is fine and there's no loud squeaks or thudding noises when you run the bike, you don't need to change it. Even if you want to replace them, you should be able to procure new Gabriel units around 2k. Or ask your local junkyard dealer for cheaper stuff.

Brake fluid - 100
Need to check rear brakes as well
First, get the brake master cylinder, and banjo bolts cleaned, and pump some fresh brake fluid into the system and bleed the old stuff out. Replace the hose if necessary. This should likely sort out your tight front brake. Replace brake pads and drum brake shoes if needed. They're cheap anyway. Total cost would be around 1.5k.

New oil = 200 rupees. Don't fill up the whole tank with petrol in one go. Fill it up just enough to get it into running shape first.

Your bike has been gathering dust. The air filter will probably still be in the same shape as when you last used it. If it was fine then, all you need to so is to blow some surface dust off it and put it back on.

It's sitting inside a chain cover. It'll probably be in the same shape. There might be some surface rust which you can clean, but it'll still be usable. Unless the parts are worn out, don't change. Just clean, adjust and grease the chain.

Sell: Selling the bike (may sell for peanuts!) in KA is another hassle since it is TN registered. My biggest worry is the proper name transfer rather than the money I might get. The bike is currently in terrible condition and no one will come forward for it.

What is the best way to proceed forward?
Since the registration has expired, find out what it will cost to get it re-registered (there will be penalties). Based on that, you can take a call on whether that option is even worth considering. Even then, who will use the bike?
Another option is to grind off the chassis and engine numbers and scrap it.

I too have a 15+ year old Hero Honda Passion lying in my hometown. I shipped it back to KL when the regn was still valid using packers and movers with the aim to sell it. But couldn't find a buyer and it is parked there since. I am also in two minds on what to do.

A simple and easy solution is to find someone needy in your hometown or village and gift it. Someone in the known would always appreciate the gesture and you can share the expenses of bring the bike back to life.

Re: What to do with a non-runner and >15yr old bike: Sell, scrap, Exchange ?

Choice is simple!
- If the bike holds emotional value, dismantle it and convert it into furniture or home decor. ( Do get permission from your Ministry of Internal Affairs before you do that)
- If it's just another bike passing by, scrap it. It doesn't make any sense repairing if the estimates are too high.

15 year old Pulsar will not get you same value, either you scrap it or resale it after repairing. So unless you personally wants to keep it, there is no point repairing it.

I had similar dilemma last year. My 12 year old Pulsar 150, scrapped for 5k, was offered 7k max if I repair it before selling.

I have a 20year old CBZ for which the RC expired recently. I had renewed the RC when it completed 15 years but decided not to renew it this time as there is no running. Waiting for scrappage policy to come into effect
It is in running condition though as I make sure that it is used for at least 5-10min once in every few months.

Re: What to do with a non-runner and >15yr old bike: Sell, scrap, Exchange ?

I am from Tamil Nadu and live in Bangalore. I'm interested in buying the bike to use it in my hometown. Name transfer will not be a problem, will get it done. 👍
DM me if you're interested

Re: What to do with a non-runner and >15yr old bike: Sell, scrap, Exchange ?

Posting a similar dilemma that I'm facing with my 2012 Yamaha FZ-S. The bike, however, is in running condition although there are some minor engine work pending (clutch related) which I'm planning to get done at a good FNG whenever I get time.

Coming to the problem at hand, it's a KL number plate vehicle but registered in KA. When I shifted to Bangalore, I decided to do the registration transfer. The transfer happened successfully but I was surprised to find that the number did not change. I have the smart card and everything.

This seems like a real mess because if I want to sell I'll have to explain this to a potential buyer because I'll lose some resale value just because of this mess.

What are my options here? Do I apply for a new number plate from the RTO in Bangalore where it is currently registered? Or should I just simply sell it at whatever resale value and accept the loss?

My wife is also keen on getting an EV scooter. Are EV dealers doing exchanges? I'd prefer selling it off through a dealer for a better EV scooter than having to go through the hassle.

Facing a similar dilemma with an aging Vespa- will most likely park it in my backyard as an overengineered clothes hanger once it has run its course. Who knows, 20 years down the road my son might want to restore it to its former puttering glory

I think this is the best time to learn and fix a bike with DIY, if you have interest on that side and also will help maintaining other bikes in your future on your own in this era of labour and GST taking up most of the part in the service bill.

My friend sold his Dio to three different people in the last 13years. All of them were in the friends and colleagues group. But none of them did RC transfer. So the Dio is with him now. So, please do the RC transfer yourself if you decide to sell it to anyone. It will cost 1200 through an agent.

Looks like you or agent missed to ask for a KA Number. I agree it will be a little tricky to convince most buyers. Best option would be to get a KA number. Do remember, the Smart cards are not available currently.

Re: What to do with a non-runner and >15yr old bike: Sell, scrap, Exchange ?

I bought a Kinetic Honda scooter in 1998 when I was living in a small city in Maharashtra, where riding two wheelers was the norm partly due to narrow lanes in the central areas of the city. I moved to Delhi in early 2000s and stopped using the scooter since Delhi traffic was completely different and not quite suited to two-wheelers, as also the harsh climate especially in winter.

My relative who was living in Thane came to know that the scooter was lying idle and purchased it from me, and I sent it to him by a packers-and-movers truck. Although he has a car also, he uses the scooter to this day for quick errands and for going to banks and markets nearby. It is most convenient for the purpose since one doesn't have to bother about parking.

I stay next to a busy main road and every day I see old Bajaj Chetaks, Vespas and Splendors being used by people who really need it, perhaps because they can't afford a newer two wheeler or are least bothered about owning the latest models. I believe there must be lots of people like that whether it is a big city or small town who can do with a convenient low-maintenance two wheeler being given away or sold for a nominal price. You only have to find them by spreading the word in the neighbourhood or with people you know in smaller towns.
