More EV 2-wheelers sold in first half of 2021 than entire CY2020

EV 2 wheeler sales are growing at a decent pace in India. According to an analysis by Autocar Professional of the 11 leading electric two-wheeler makers in India reveals that in the first six months of 2021, a total of 29,288 units were sold, thus surpassing the total sales of 2020 (25,598).

With factors like increase of FAME II subsidy, generous subsidy in Gujarat, the new launches (Ola, Simple One, etc...), expansion of Ather 450x, TVS iQube, Ampere, etc.. to multiple cities, sales in the second half of 2021 sales will be even better.

Re: More EV 2-wheelers sold in first half of 2021 than entire CY2020

I think this increase in number is predominantly due to:

(a) new launches; and
(b) dealership expansion to several new cities.

What will be interesting to see is once this initial launch and establishment in different cities stabilises, what incremental adoption these scooters show.

Electric scooters will only have high mass adoption when we have more products which have closer price parity to mainstream mass market scooters. I’d even say that they could show faster adoption than even four wheelers because range anxiety is a much lesser issue in the scooter segment.

I can see a lot of interest in the entire delivery network ecosystem for such adoption given they are much more cost conscious to their pricing model. Also, individual workers who have access to a charging point and need to commute by two wheelers to their place of work. Removable batteries (for charging purpose) in such scooters will also facilitate deeper penetration.

I’d like to think the biggest factor behind this is the skyrocketing price of petrol. High running costs pinch the lower middle strata of society the most. EV 2 wheelers are ideal for the daily commute to work or for going to tuitions etc. The fact that you don’t need a driving license or insurance for most of them makes them so much more accessible and attractive.

Why are the figures of Bajaj (Chetak) & TVS (iQube) absent from this list?
Are they not selling in significant numbers?
