Bangalore-based start-up, Simple Energy has announced the launch date for its first electric scooter.

The Mark 2 will make its debut on August 15, 2021. The Simple Energy Mark 2 is a compact and sporty looking e-scooter and will compete with the Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube. It comes with an LED headlamp and a touchscreen instrument console that has navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Mark 2 uses a mid-drive motor that is powered by a 4.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The company claims a 0-50 km/h acceleration time of 3.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 100 km/h. The battery is said to offer a maximum range of 240 km on a single charge.

240km range seems too good to be true. Hope they price it within the reach of other players.

Not sure what's stopping the new players from introducing motorcycles with similar specifications. Bigger wheels and better weight distribution will surely attract long distance commuters.

Practically 240km/charge is possible if the vehicle is driven at 40kmph constant speed on a flat road. I got 150km range (2.3kWh consumed) at ~35kmph average speed when driven consciously for higher efficiency. So 240km/charge is realistic number with 4.8kWh pack without any effort :)

I completely agree with you giri1.8:thumbs up. For the last 4+ years I am "bikeless" only on the hope that I can get hold of a good electric motorcycle, on which I can do 150-200 km round trips in the Western Ghats. I dread to take scooter on a long ride for the simple reason of small wheels and poor suspension. A scooter is more suitable for small errands, grocery shopping etc within a radius of 10 kms. But if you are looking for 100 kms or beyond for your weekend rides, then I cannot imagine doing these on a 2-wheeler other than a bike with a good suspension.

The pricing announced by the makers for the Mark 2 is enticing. If they can undercut the Ather which at 1.7L on road is simply too expensive, then this will sell extremely well.
Being an electric, the maintenence costs should be well within limits and this would prove to be an effective daily runabout.

I just hope they can expand quickly because initially supposed to sell only in Bangalore.

There are so many new EV makers now in the Indian 2wheeler market. I doubt how many would actually grow like Ather. Most would end up disappearing after a few months, not all would succeed. The initial batch of buyers would have to face the issues.

Simple energy has revealed that the name of their first scooter will be “Simple One”. It will be launched on August 15th in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad followed by other cities in months to come. It will have a 4.8 kWh battery and 240 km of range in ECO mode.

It is expected to be priced for approx. Rs 1.1 lakhs.

I think with such a big battery it can give 150 km of real-world range in ECO mode.

Ola scooter was earlier supposed to be launched in July. Have heard that it got delayed because of homologation issues. Hope Simple Energy's launch does not get completely overshadowed now that both are launching on the same date. The claimed specs on this one are really good. If what they claim is delivered, this is quicker and has a higher range than Ola. The CEO also confirmed pricing close to Rs 1.2L.

It's a massively underserved market. A VFM electric scooter providing acceptable/decent range and performance. Ather is priced twice that of an average scooter. Bajaj and TVS have massive booking back logs in the 2-3 cities that they have launched.

The rest of the market is supplied by small scale chinese kit assemblers who put together tacky/brittle electric scooters, some of which can barely keep up with city traffic eg Okinawa, Hero etc..

So it's an open goalpost for a large manufacturer.

Simple Energy announces 1 million unit production capacity from the first year.
Bookings start from 15th August

It’s going to be called the Simple One and the company has even gone so far as to tell us that it will be priced between Rs 1.1-1.2 lakh. But whether this price is ex-showroom or on-road and before or after subsidies is yet to be seen. The worst-case scenario is that this is the ex-showroom price after subsidies. Even if that is the case, the Simple One would still undercut the Ather 450X and 450 Plus.

This is remarkable because, on paper, it seems to have the beaten the Ather duo. Claims include a 240km range in economy mode and a 100kph top speed. This is probably thanks to its large 4.8kWh battery pack, which dwarfs the Athers’ 2.9kWh unit. The One seems to be on par in the features department too, coming with a touchscreen that features Bluetooth connectivity and navigation.

The cuboid-shaped battery pack has a metal outer case with a design machined into it and a handle at the top.It has a battery capacity of 4.8kWh. Removable battery pack will weigh over 6kg. Simple Energy is able to claim a range of 240km in Eco mode.

While the battery pack has been developed in-house by Simple Energy, the individual cells inside are not made in India.

Removable battery gang has entered the chat:D
Now if Ola doesn't give removable batteries and Simple prices it's scooter within 10k of the Ola scooter then Ola is going to be in trouble. Though Ola will be going nation wide from the start, not sure about Simple.

I personally know a few people who are just eagerly waiting for Ather to come up with a detachable battery pack option. As their apartment association does not allow ev chargers in common areas.

Also not everyone has a parking near the meter board, so extensive wiring will be a hassle.

Same applies to people staying in rented houses too. Not sure why they dint consider this while making a scooter.

The only thing looking good in all of the above pictures is the battery pack

If each battery pack is of 2.4 kWh capacity then they weigh well over 6 kgs. Batteries in Tesla Model X have a density of 168 wh/kg at the pack level. So, the 2.4 kWh pack weighs at least 14+ kgs (2400/168 = 14.2).
