Diego Graffi, Chairman and MD, Piaggio India, has stated that the company will be launching the updated Aprilia SR series of scooters during the upcoming festive season.



So, what can we expect in the new SR series?

According to the media report, the SR range could get an updated instrument console offering Bluetooth connectivity and an average fuel efficiency display. While it is unclear if the scooters will receive mechanical updates, it is believed that an engine start / stop system could be introduced this time around.

Aprilia also plans to introduce the SXR 125 and a limited edition Vespa as part of the Italian brand's 75th anniversary celebrations.

Meanwhile, Aprilia is also gearing up to launch the SXR 125 in India. The maxi-scooter is essentially a 125cc version of the SXR 160 that was launched in December last year.

Instead of offering new paint schemes and enhanced MIDs etc. Aprilia needs to focus on offering better performing maxi-scooters. A typical Aprilia user is looking for motorcycle like performance with the convenience of a scooter. Aprilia is a niche player and it needs to get the formula right if it wants pursue success in a market like India.

Also they need to control their price rises. The SR already costs double its launch price in barely 5 years. Sure they have added stuff and input costs have risen but definitely not enough to double the price

I had purchased my SR150 in July 2018 at 85k! After 2 months of the purchase, the SR150's price got increased to 1L and along with newly added features as well like the digital speedometer, which my Aprilia doesn't have!

Again after few months, the price got increased and the price of SR150 (now SR160) costs around 1.4L on-road Hyd!

The changes between my 2018 SR150 and current version is the digital speedometer, which I'm missing it badly in my version, single bulb headlight (my version has 2), and connected features!

So much for a scoot, which used to cost around 80-85k in 2017-18, and after almost 3 years of my purchase, the scoot costs more than a lakh!

But, if I don't have any problem in spending more than a lakh on a scoot and need a performance based scoot, I'll happily go for the Aprilia SR160 over NTorq and other scooters!

Man am I glad about my decision to buy my Race edition in 2017, got it at 83k and now the normal edition starts at 1.3-1.4 l on road. Even though additions such as Fi, digital speedo, abs and recalibrated suspension are good, it's not enough to justify this big a price raise. They should be offering led headlamps and tail lights, better seats (trust me those seats just look good), better build quality and parts quality and a bigger fuel tank at that price. Hope they make these additions as well.

Updated Aprilia SR 160 spied ahead of launch

The updated Aprilia SR 160 has been spied at what seems to be a dealership yard. Two units of the upcoming scooter have been caught on camera.

The updated Aprilia SR 160 would come with a full-LED headlight accompanied by LED DRLs on either side. The design of the headlight and the front apron would be tweaked for a sportier look.



The scooter would also feature new graphics and colour options. The seat would be revised, too. It is being anticipated that the updated Aprilia SR 160 would come equipped with a new fully digital instrument cluster that is likely to be borrowed from the Aprilia SXR 160.

The updated Aprilia SR 160 is likely to have the same 160.03cc, single-cylinder, 3-valve engine that powers the outgoing model. Other features would include a pair of telescopic front forks, 14-inch alloy wheels, front disc and rear drum brake, single-piece pillion grab rail.



While Aprilia is yet to announce the official launch date of the updated SR 160, it is being said that the company could introduce the scooter during the upcoming festive season.

These are good updates, since the LED lights and instrumentation now bring it up to the standards of at least the TVS NTorq, which probably leads the pack of sporty scooters in terms of features.

That said, the niche value of the SR160 has been robbed a bit by the amazing Aerox 155, which takes the definition of a scooter's sporty credentials to another level altogether. This update was much needed to at least bring it to a level of parity in some cases. It would be key to keep it priced accordingly, since the Race edition of the SR160 is only about 15k less than the superior Aerox.

Updated Aprilia SR 160 to be officially unveiled this month

Aprilia has confirmed that it will unveil the updated SR 160 this month. The Italian company has, however, not disclosed an exact date. The firm has also announced via a press statement that pre-bookings of the updated scooter will commence soon.

The updated Aprilia SR 160 is expected to come equipped with a redesigned headlight and front apron for a sportier look. The scooter would also have a full-LED headlight accompanied by LED DRLs on either side.



Apart from that, the updated Aprilia SR 160 would have split seats and a larger pillion grab rail. One of the main highlights of the upcoming scooter would be the new fully digital instrument cluster that is likely to be borrowed from the Aprilia SXR 160.

Aprilia has also announced that along with the updated SR 160, it will also unveil the updated SR 125 model that will have two variants - Race and Carbon.

2021 Aprilia SR 160 pre-bookings open

Aprilia has started accepting pre-bookings for the 2021 SR 160. Customers can place their orders on Aprilia's official website. It is expected to be launched later this month.

Aprilia has launched the updated SR 125 and SR 160 at Rs 1.08 lakh and Rs 1.17 lakh (ex-showroom)



Now the Aprilia SR scooters gets new digital instrument cluster and split seats. The grab rails have also been redesigned.





The updated SR 160 sports a new, sharper design, a new V-shaped LED headlight and tail-lamp.

Looking forward to take a test ride of this scooter. SR160 is a good alternative to a bike for me as due to physical limitation I can't ride a Motorbike. few things I could observe in a Youtube walkaround video:
- new digital instrumentation cluster looks good.
- graphics in race edition are not too flashy this time.
- there is a Mode switch beside the engine start button- hoping this will ride mode switch, so selectable ride mode ? I hope its in all variants and not just in Race edition.
- new handguards in race edition.
- carbon fiber finish on plastic trims in many places looks good.
- split seat pattern gives more space for pillion riders, this was horrible in previous edition.

At over 1.6 Lakhs on road Bangalore - its in lifestyle purchase territory - like the Vespa.

There's nothing like the SR 160, elegant, peppy and easy to flick.

But man from ~65K INR ex showroom at launch to 1.27 Lakhs ( for sr160 ) the scooter price has doubled in 5 years.
