Hanway G30! Chinese copy the Royal Enfield Himalayan

Looks like the Chinese are not just mimicking Italian marquee's. Here's their version of the RE Himalayan, the Hanway G-30.

Hanway G30! Chinese copy the Royal Enfield Himalayan-webp_netresizeimage6_720x540.jpg

It is powered by a 249.2cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 26.5PS at 9000rpm and 22Nm at 7500rpm.

It comes in 2 trims, the standard and the G30-X. The G30-X gets a TFT console, which to me, looks awfully similar to the ones on KTMs and tubeless wire-spoked rims.

Hanway G30 - Chinese Himalayan

Chinese automakers has indeed ripped off a very popular Indian model. Hanway’s G30 adventure motorcycle looks like a perfect rip-off of our very own Royal Enfield Himalayan. We say ‘perfect’ because it hasn’t done a bad job in its styling nor the added features it has been provided.

For the record, this is yet not available in the Himalayan. It costs an equivalent of ₹1.92lakh which makes it cheaper than the model it comes copied from.
Features :
  • 250CC
  • 26bhp
  • 22 Nm
  • Tubeless tyres on spoke wheels
  • TFT instruments
  • USD forks
  • LED headlamps with a DRL

Very interesting. Thanks for the post.
The news link you provided says that it might never hit the Indian market and I concur, but it will be interesting to see if it makes a mark elsewhere in the world?
RE Himalayan is doing really well in the USA and thanks to a couple of youtubers like Itchy Boots and Karmakaze, the REH has gained a lot of interest around the world.
I feel the Chinese copy cat is underpowered even though they have added a few gizmos to the bike. Let us see how this one pans out?

Plus the Chinese have managed to give tubeless tyres on spoked wheels.

So the Gulsar affair is still carrying on?

Something that we can be proud of. Ofcourse the Wrangler- Thar one is contested because of Mahindra's jeep legacy. But by far even if we are not as large or technically advanced as the Chinese industry, we can be proud that our domestic companies do some of the finest examples of "it ain't much, but it is honest work"

Not to say how Bajaj and TVS had decimated 100s of Chinese companies in the African market.

Dropping a note to a related thread on copycats (The Motorcycle Copycat / Lookalike Thread). This one can stay independent though as it's a copy of an Indian motorcycle

Re: Hanway G30! Chinese copy the Royal Enfield Himalayan

RE get those wired wheels in your bike and you have won an additional segment of buyers who avoid Himalayan as its not tubeless.
What is so great in making a wired wheel tubeless? RE needs to invest time efforts and money with wheel rim manufacturers. Its the need of the hour!.

With the sucess now its time RE did something to bump up those Power figures. Water cooled engine with higher power and torque figures?

We don't know if those are "Chinese HP/torque" figures or real HP and torque figures. At times car manufacturers (US) have secretly put in engines with higher power and torque than declared - just imagine if RE did that!

It’s mind blowing how an entire country just runs off rip offs. The design costs are spared and they are able to produce cheaper versions by reverse engineering. In the long run, nobody will find it rewarding to design something new. Just wait for some one to come up with an idea and then run to get a cheap knock off !

Ayn Rand’s fountainhead comes to mind.

I make an effort to only buy a Chinese product or brand if there is absolutely no other alternative. This intellectual property theft is what will destroy product innovation in all fields. By buying Chinese products we are directly supporting this behaviour of these companies and a Government which allows this theft to continue unabated.

A few days ago I bought a smartphone for my parents, the only two non-negotiable criteria were non-Chinese Brand and Made in India. There were limited options but found a few decent options from Samsung. I was amazed at the range of copycat Chinese iPhones that were available online !

Re: Hanway G30! Chinese copy the Royal Enfield Himalayan

Just why! Does China really need to still do this after all the growth, progress etc? Just checked the BYD site to see that they still make copycats after all these years.

Here is an Autocar pro link from last year which lists some current copycats.

That was my initial thought after seeing this. We cannot happily lap up copies of the Thar but see red (Pun intended) when it comes to Chinese copies. Granted that the Thar looks a bit different but barely. We have now lost the right to point fingers.

Re: Hanway G30! Chinese copy the Royal Enfield Himalayan

Instead of being peeved that the Chinese are copying RE. I'm happy that an Indian company has made something that's valuable enough that the Chinese are copying it.

People only buy copies because they are much cheaper. The Wrangler is atrociously priced for what it offers. If it'd had been priced a little above the compass, many would have bought it.

Re: Hanway G30! Chinese copy the Royal Enfield Himalayan

Pretty much agree with all what's been said, but after owning a Himalayan BS4 and going through the pain of ownership, am sure the Hanway G30 would atleast be reliable and well tested before its release rather than adopting a "testing on customer" approach of the RE. It also has better features, tubeless rims and has good power for a 250cc.

I hope RE invests time and effort in making bike run well and not just come up with good tag lines for them.

Re: Hanway G30! Chinese copy the Royal Enfield Himalayan

I'm glad this happened. Let it get competitive. Copying is very common in business so Royal Enfield has no option but to get more competitive.
No tubeless tyres? Perhaps that's what they'll need to include in their next version.

I do get why Chinese auto manufacturers get alot of hate, but we tend to gloss over the fact that Indian manufacturers are guilty too. For example, the second generation Bajaj Pulsar (The ones that first got a dome instead of the round headlamps) took alot of cues from the older Kawasaki Z1000/800. The Pulsar 200 NS had/had suspiciously similar styling to that of the mid 2000s Honda CB 1000R, the Pulsar 200 RS was an extremely blatant rip-off of the Energica Ego electric superbike. So it's very ironic when the Indian automotive media puts Chinese manufacturers on blast.
PS: I don't condone the blatant plagiarism exhibited by Chinese automakers in any shape or form and the attitude of the Chinese Govt when it comes to copyrights and patents
