Re: The Atum 1.0 Electric Motorcycle - Max speed of merely 25 kmph

All the complaints that it's too slow are inane. We already have BICYCLES. This goes at more or less the same speed as a cycle, but is more convenient for many who can't pedal that well or are not fit. If we had more of these and fewer cars (with just 1 person sitting inside) or even fewer Activas, we'd have less congestion and much cleaner air. AFAIK in countries that actually are somewhat concerned with pedestrian lives (Norway etc.), inside-the-city speed limits are anyway around 30 kmph. If we could have more people walking (on properly built sidewalks), we could actually enforce more strict speed limits and encourage use of such bikes and normal bicycles. That's the future, not Teslas.

Re: The Atum 1.0 Electric Motorcycle - Max speed of merely 25 kmph

Sorry to say, but products like these give EVs a bad name. A bicycle would be a better deal than the 25Kmph vehicles in my personal opinion and these days you have electric boosters available for bicycles.

That motor is 250W, that is terribly underpowered and it will struggle to go up slopes. I own a Hero Photon Li and an Ather 450x. The Photon has 1200W motor and it feels sluggish when two adults go for a ride. The Ather 450x on the other hand is great fun to drive. I understand that EV two wheelers are simpler to make than ICE counterparts so more people are getting into the act. But there should be some engineering put into it to make it aspirational. There is no cost advantage with EVs.

Look at PureEV's product line up. https://pureev.in/epluto/ There is hardly a 12K difference between an underpowered product and their normal product. One of the claimed advantages for the underpowered EV 2 wheelers is that underage people can buy one of these products without a driving license. My reaction is why would a student do that instead of borrowing an Activa?

We need serious players in this market and I hope that Bajaj gets its' act right soon with the eChetak and forces other major players to get into the segment to build good two wheelers. An Activa is about 1lakh on road, for additional money, the EV product needs to be at least as fun to drive.

Legally mandated max speed in throttle mode for e-bicycles in India is 25kph to avoid license and registration requirements.

Have you watched the video posted a few comments before? For a personal commuting purpose, it did not show such a behavior for its usage class.

I do not believe that's the target usage they gave during the design brief of this e-bike. This is personal commuter at best, more like a longer range e-bike which rarely see pillion usage these days.

I didn't just read that! Are you suggesting an underage person to illegally handle a licensed vehicle on public road, instead of using a vehicle shoehorned for them? I'd be curious to know what BHPians feel about that.

As an 80s kid, I remember quite a few batch mates and seniors or mine used to ride Bajaj Sunny, Luna and TVS 50 to school as high schoolers. It was street legal to ride a 50 cc (I think the max displacement was 60 cc) moped/scooter as a 16 year old.

For 14 to 18, this is not a bad deal to be independent. Whether parents would spend 50K for this one purpose is another question alltogether.

This is not targeted at a cycling enthusiast. Since you brought up Hero, they have couple of e-scooters in this category for quite sometime.

Tons of TVS Scootys and autorikshaws are already doing this public 'service'
