re: The KTM 390 Adventure (Gen- 1) Ownership Thread!

Maybe a poorly designed pipe may be loud? The stock ktm ADV just sounds rubbish IMO because of the BS6 and cat con and baffle. I for one loved the older gen KTM which sounded like a two stroke auto!
The new end can by motowings is just slightly louder than the stock bike for example, but makes the bike sound much nicer and gruntier.

It's got nothing to do with KTM or any other brand, but the general usage of the sort of bike the adventure is, versus tge Duke ir the RC.

I have a plethora of tuned pipes for my Bullets. But when I tour, the long soft 7 baffle bazooka goes back on them.

Rightly said Doc! Although the exhaust on the ADV 390 is subtle, I find it perfect for touring, especially in rural areas where those mouth watering unpaved tracks and single track trails can be found. By not making much of a noise, going unnoticed is what the ADV's exhaust is good at. Also, let's not forget the fact that loud exhausts are directly related to racing and unruly riding amongst the common man, which in turn results with an unpleasant eye anywhere you travel, leaving a bad mark on the riding community. I have nothing against loud exhausts, I enjoy them myself, BUT just not while touring.

On the other hand, I see a lot of ADV riders looking for a better (read louder) exhaust. Most of these owners I know have either changed to the duke 390 or a husky end can, some have removed the DB killer on these just for the extra grunt.

An aftermarket "performance" pipe, regardless of which wizard makes it, is always going to channel and prak your powerband somewhere. It's going to beef it up someplace and weaken it elsewhere. As Dilip (Bam) used to always say, it's the law of Physics. If you want to go faster, you have to burn more petrol. To create more energy. To get that added thrust. You cannot feed your race horse channe like a khacchar and expect it to go faster - or something to that effect ... which is exactly what happens when riders rip out exhaust systems designed after countless man and tech hours by multi billion dollar bike giants and replace it with magic pipe dalda dabbas from two room hole in the wall shacks with a website (or forum/facebook/insta page) and a "mad genius"...

But I digress.

Pipe makers are a special breed. And I've known some really neurotic prima donnas in my time. They will promise you the moon and the stars. Like the pipe is going to make your bike a rocket magically by shoving that dalda dabba at the end of your pipe. Bollocks. It's always harmonics and simple gas flow dynamics that robs Peter to pay Paul.

The FEELZ is everything. And reams of oooohs and aaaahs of fanbois about how fast it is and what orgasms they get with the pipe comes on boil. As if it's not the bike's pipe they are now speaking about but ...

And yes, except in the rare cases of both rider and tuner understanding and accepting the laws of Physics, and building and running a pipe as PART of a while process, in the 99 out of 100 other cases. It is mainly about the sound and the kick in the pants one gets at one tiny narrow part of the powerband in each gear.

The feelz .... suitably bolstered by cdi's, iridium plugs, aftermarket pod filters, and porting (which in the hands of most is purely excavation of metal and making small holes bigger).

Anyways, I digress again.

Short of proper dyno or speed gun evidence, and bike on bike mano e mano on the road, I tend to fall asleep in such discussions.

The day a so-called tuner or magic pipe maker designs a exhaust system superior to not just the manic Austrians but the crazy Japlas as well, BONE STOCK, I'll permanently retire my leathers.

Which is why I simply, very simply, countered that it's loud.

Cheers, Doc

Back from Konkan Ride

Recently came back from a Konkan ride. The weather was beautiful and it was refreshing break from the daily routine. The 390 Adventure was a indeed a good companion.

Here, sharing a few photos and videos of the ride. Will share more in days ahead.

Shot on Vivo X70 Pro+, GoPro Hero 5 Black and DJI Spark.

I don’t think there are many common men here. And if they were, maybe a year or two after being on good riding/biking forums etc, they’ve changed?

And maybe just because someone likes a loud exhaust, it doesn’t qualify him/her to be a a racer or unruly. Like you admitted. You like them too. But you’re not a racer are you? All I’m saying is, loud isn’t always bad, loud doesn’t mean you want to race.

Yes it’s just an end cap. No, I don’t know if it makes the bike go, or seem to go faster. But, it surely makes the bike, sound like a real bike, would anyone deny that? So louder isn’t always bad right? The end cap is from bestdualsportbikes.

People still tour on older RE models right?

Is an end can really worth 100 USD?!!!
I almost pulled the trigger on this but looks like the installation which is supposed to be simple plug and play according to the manufacturer is not so in real life. Wouldn't pulling out the baffle produce the same effect as this end can?

Is it worth a $100 or $10 only you can be the judge of that. I know people in India who have got this installed on their bikes. If you make rupee conversions, maybe, maybe not.

In America/Europe, every senior citizen with a screwdriver and a garage becomes a DIY mechanic so sometimes stuff what they feel is difficult, our local mechanics can do it with one hand tied behind their back.

I’ve also been told that cutting the baffle will give the same kind of sound. Me, I’d prefer to go the end can route rather than cut open the baffle inside. Remember, to get to the baffle, again, the exhaust has to be cut open too I would guess?

re: The KTM 390 Adventure (Gen- 1) Ownership Thread!

The 2022 models have arrived at certain dealers in Bangalore. I had a look at the bike which was on display at KTM showroom in BTM Layout. A formal launch has been planned for this Sunday and deliveries are set to begin from 16th Feb. As of now, no price hike has been done to the 2022 model according to the showroom guys from the quotation. Perhaps, a 4.5k increase from the total price which my friend bought end of November. Metzeller Tyres were on the bikes though the KTM website lists Continental TKC 70. Other than the addition of Street and Offroad modes along with new graphics, the bike remains same as that of 2021 model. The matte blue tank on orange looks much better in-person than visible on the image. The other black/grey model is also expected to reach the dealer tomorrow.

The quote I received:
Ex-Showroom Price - Rs. 3,28,378
Road Tax + Insurance - Rs. 91,780
RSA 2 Years - Rs. 1,699
AMC - Rs. 2,800

Total - Rs. 4,24,657

I second your opinion, installed Motowings Titus Exhaust on my 390Adventure covered over 2000kms, including a 1600kms trip to Gokarna ( 700kms to reach and 800kms to return ). These are my observations
1. Exhaust is little bit louder compared to the stock but more gruntier, not too loud like the cheap replicas. Didn't feel any fatique related to exhaust sound in the entire trip.
2. Improvement in low-end, can ride around 2500rpm 34kmph in 3rd and 4th gear without knocking or stalling, not doable in stock, engine comes alive only after 3000rpm.
3. Engine braking also improved compared to stock exhaust.
4. No change in fuel consumption.

I accompanied a friend recently to look at these beautiful machines at BTM. They are very impressive. With a very limited knowledge I have about these machines, I liked them and also liked the way it handled (TD was on a 2021 model). I had not done any riding after I sold my Enfield in 2013.

One query regarding height.
Any one with a height of around 170cm (5 feet 7 inches) is riding adventure 390 here?. How is your experience of riding adventure? Are you able to comfortably ride in city and highway and seat height is not causing any issues.

Please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Hi slevynhawk, I was at the same showroom today morning checking the same bike for myself. I did visit KTM Aundh, KTM Wakdewadi and KTM Karve Road as well.
The experience at KTM Baner and KTM Aundh was good. PM me if you want to talk more about it.

Riding tall bikes with not so tall height is a skill that can be learned. I am myself 5'7" looking forward to ride this bike. You can watch Bulu biker on youtube to get some tricks.

Hi White Aviator, It'd be good to connect with a fellow buyer, however, my account do not have permission to PM someone. So probably you have to do it.

Would love to connect with fellow riders from Pune..

Does KTM Baner or Aundh give you solo TDs? Currently I have a Himalayan and am planning to upgrade. I did try the Interceptor, but the Himalayan has spoilt me with its comfortable stance, not that the Interceptor is bad or so. I might plan to visit the showroom for a TD this weekend.
