We have no dearth of inexperienced craftsmen making outlandish claims.

I have had hauled a combined 86L of storage capacity with weights I've not even bothered to calculate, from clothes to coconuts to jack fruits, you name it, I've transported it.

This rack was designed by Sahyadri Moto, Mumbai whose owner used to ride motorcycles in Indonesia, read more luggage worse to nonexistent roads. The design was originally from Syndicate Motors, Indonesia and the owner Bhushan was kind enough to explain to me in detail of what goes into making reliable racks.

The gist of which is, rather than outright material strength/thickness one needs to focus more on weight distribution among multiple support points, which is something implemented in their designs which on close inspection you can see there is no shortage of.

Now when it comes to certain racks, they use thicker tubes with different designs but ultimately the load is focused on the two mount points of your grab rail.

The KTM 390 Adventure (Gen- 1) Ownership Thread!-41gt9aajckl._sx425_.jpg

Now this is convenient for tying light soft luggage, but the moment you consider serious luggage it poses the threat of your chassis snapping.

The KTM 390 Adventure (Gen- 1) Ownership Thread!-img20191017wa0006.jpg

The above is a pic a fellow enthusiast shared, his chassis snapped when he had a top box on which was mounted to his grab rail mounts and was riding hard through some terrain in Ladhak.

When riding through challenging terrain at speed, the whole rack tends to act as a lever and the load at one end tends to do some serious damage at the other end.

Hence why I've said before, leverage is not always a good thing when it comes to motorcycles.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
A.P.

Ashwin, I agree - which is why I posted detailed images as received from the manufacturer for a discussion here. I wasn’t convinced myself.

I have a query, an older rider, who is a friend and fellow enthusiast rides a 2019 Duke 390.

Though aged he hauls some serious ass, to the point he clocked 17k km's within 6 months of ownership, would've been more if it weren't for the downtime caused by warranty replacement due to QC concerns.

The current issue he faces is body aches when riding for extended periods, he did contemplate using raisers but realized he couldn't as he uses a Puig Windscreen and it is mounted on to the speedometer mount which is part of the handlebar clamp.

Just when he was about to loose hope he stumbled upon the image of both your motorcycles and had a few questions for you guys, which I'm sharing;

1. Is the ADV390's handlebar taller than the Duke 390's?
2. Is the ADV390's setup more relaxed and comfortable compared to the committed nature of the Duke 390's?
3. Is the ADV390's handlebar tapered as the Duke 390's i.e would it fit the Duke 390?

Since his motorcycle is pretty new at a little over 6/7 Months, changing the motorcycle is out of the question, but he wishes to change the handlebar to that of the ADV 390's, to make life a little bit easier, if at all that is possible.

Thanks in Advance,
A.P.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. I don’t know. The Duke 390 risers will not fit the clamp/bars of the 390 adventure. We need a whole new design for it to work.

Thanks a lot!

Have communicated the same and he appreciates the speedy response.

He is going ahead with his plan to source the ADV390's handlebar and use it on the Duke 390. As you'd already know KTM uses tapered bars so compatibility is strictly limited to KTM parts.

Risers are out of the question because on the new D390 the speedometer is mounted on the handlebar holder and the Puig visor has two mount points one of which is the LCD Mount and the other being the T Plate pinch bolt, so using raisers is simply out of the question.

re: The KTM 390 Adventure (Gen- 1) Ownership Thread!

After reading the reviews here and watching umpteen number of reviews/Vlogs on YouTube, I have decided to book the Duke 390 ADV after the lock down ends.

This would mark my return to riding after nearly 4 years of hiatus. I have a Machismo 350 (which is now being used by my cousin occasionally) and have used it on multiple trips earlier.
Felt like I was missing out on all the fun (by not riding) and wanted something nimble and light.
I will use it for weekend long distance rides (whenever my family does not want to accompany me) and some office commute (Whenever I am late for a meeting, etc.).
Trail riding is not my cup of tea though.
looking forward to the Test ride.

Probably the most detailed review of the motorcycle out on the interwebs.

re: The KTM 390 Adventure (Gen- 1) Ownership Thread!

So my 390 ADV has lost some weight in this lockdown.

Stripped off the saree guard and the number plate extension which gives it a cool tail tidy effect. Combined, I guess it would have lost nearly 2 - 2.5 kg.

Pictures, how it looks now:

I really feel pity for those who are following this bike. Is there not a rule about MUD guard?

One of the best rendering artists showing me what I had in mind for my KTM 390 Adventure. Surely going to get to this, slow and steady.

What do you guys think?

Any functional reason you want bar end mirrors on an adventure bike? I think it looks ridiculous. Imagine standing on the pegs, and looking at these mirrors

Its your bike, you can do whatever you want

But if you ask for opinions from adventure purists on an adventure/dual sport bike thread... You won't know what hit you
