What I would suggest is to have your sister TD the Jupiter and Access, over normal, broken and potholed roads if possible, and then buy the one she's most comfortable with. You can't go wrong with either.

Do update and good luck
Thanks a lot for your detailed response.

Several of my relatives use the old generation Access. The first gen Access especially has been abused beyond belief and has performed very well under such harsh use. It is only the complaints of engine sound getting louder/harsher over the years and the unusual issues with starting after a short ride, while engine is warmed up, that made me question the Access build. Of course, most of these niggles are something I've come across in online reviews by users on zigwheels, gaadiwala, bikewala and so on. My friends who personally ride the scooter don't have anything to complain about apart from the A.S.S quality.

Anyway, the purchase might happen in Jan 21. Will definitely update once done.

Apart from him, my regular FNG also asked me to avoid Jupiter and go for Ntorq.

I must have been to TVS service center not more than 2 times, it's a fish market, but I've heard it's better than Hero and Honda, which is like traveling in the Mumbai local.

I've always trusted my FNG for all my 2 and 4 wheelers upkeep.

I haven't experienced Hero A.S.S. but the Honda experience is unbelievably bad. The major showroom closest to my house is a Planet Honda and the way the treat the customers is appalling because of the sheer apathy. Want to buy the top of the line scooter, with full cash? Wait in line. Want to get serviced? Stand in line.

Of course, with the perpetual crowd at the service centre as well as the showroom, they can afford to be like that.

TVS centres are filled with well intentioned but poorly trained people at showroom and decent mechanical technicians at service centre. They resolve 90% of all major problems but can't do much about small niggles. Worse, a new niggle started after a regular service. Generally people check for resolution of existing problems post service. For me, it had been the opposite. When there was delay in throttle response, a technician told me that I was revving too fast. That I should twist the throttle slowly, else "the air in the power box will get stuck". No idea what he meant. I asked him why then did they name it RTR - Racing Throttle Response. Issue resolved at my FNG later.

But the service centre manager was very helpful and courteous. But he alone can't and shouldn't run the entire service centre. One time the wash job was terrible. The bike was dirtier than when I'd brought it in, with all grease marks over the white fuel tank. When pointed, the manager himself cleaned it up with a rag because the designated cleaner had left for the day I was appalled!

Sorry for the rant post. But I believe that service experience also should count in evaluating options for purchase.

I ride an Apache RTR 180(2011, 56k kms, used by 3 riders and served in 3 cities) and also like the TVS build quality and QC, till date I have no complaints with the bike at all.
And my experience with TVS Service has been good to excellent across Bangalore, Pune and Ranchi.
See how varied the dealership/A.S.S. experience can be
That's why I emphasized on not to keep A.S.S. as a deal breaker in your purchase decision.

While you are at the Hero stable, also TD the Maestro and Destiny 125s as well. And after the 1st service i would recommend moving to a semi-synthetic oil if it isn't running on already, makes a difference. Don't go for very expensive ones as the drain intervals are shorter on scooters. I would suggest every 2500km, company recommends 3000.

True for the first generation Access but the current Access is different from the first generation, first being the engine, though better accelerating but I don't think it would handle a lot of abuse(my personal opinion from experience, but not a fact).

Do take the TD's and let us know, would be great know.

If only Jupiter had come with a 125cc engine (Didnt consider nTorq), I would have considered it. The entry and exit to my society has a steep gradient. With me (120 kg) and the pillion, a 110cc scoot mite struggle a bit. The 150cc scooters are simply expensive and have hard suspension (Had an Aprilia SR 150).
With Scoots going Hi Tech (FI), is it still feasible or ideal to get the scoot serviced at an FNG?

The pre facelift model was amazing! The 180 especially was Bulletproof! My cousin has ridden it all over the place. On road, off road, and everywhere in between. And blasted over the highways. Over a lakh km and still runs fine. The DP you see here is of the same bike, when we had taken it into the basin of the TungaBhadra dam and did some mild off-roading. Total fun experience!

Thank you for the pointers. Will definitely update on the TD. But it might take some time since sister's semester exams last till year end. In Jan will take up all the TD and update.

Re: Scooter with the best ride quality / suspension?

I had the pleasure of riding pillion on a very old Duro. In my opinion this bike has the 'plush-est' ride I've ever experienced on any scooter. It felt like I was on a sofa and it swallowed the bad roads (No roads, just potholes!) on Bangalore with ease

Before buying any vehicle, always take a test ride/drive of the options available/considered as all reviews/opinions are the perception of the reviewer and may be different from the buyers perspective. It’s safer before spending the money and may avoid disappointment while living with the vehicle.

I have not ridden the Activa 6G as I wanted a 125cc scooter, so cannot comment on it.

Cheers

We made a mistake by purchasing pleasure in May 2015. Not the very old pleasure which was great but the last generation pleasure with triangular tail lamp. It was more noise less motion. Blame it on my luck for landing on such a bike itself or pathetic ASS who every time said this is how the bike is. Anyday Zest would've been a sane choice than Pleasure. Now that we don't need a scooter and selling pleasure was a good riddance for me. This was about old pleasure. I will never go to Hero again for a scooter. So TD new Pleasure and Zest and then take a call.

Exactly, my good could be bad for others and vice-versa.
TDs are the only way to finalize, whether from the showroom or friends.

Yes it is.
And going off topic from scooters, but since you asked about the RTR.
Mine was lying in a friend's basement basement for a year at 48k kms since I was away, got it towed to a TVS workshop, the only extra cost I had to bear was a leaked battery(forgot to remove it, lessons learnt).
The next day I took it on a 4000+km road trip over excellent, average, under construction and sometimes non existent but mesmerizing roads of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka.
It was exhilarating and no issues from the RTR, still performs like new.

I can imagine, its a fun bike.
Same here on the pics, my profile pic now is from that trip and my avatar/DP is the of the RTR 180 tacho, taken the evening I took delivery

Take your time, the only thing remaining are the TDs and like Cyborg rightly said, perspectives and preferences differ so TD is the only way to sort it out.

Your TD list now :
  • Suzuki Access 125
  • TVS Jupiter
  • TVS Zest
  • Honda Activa 6G
  • Honda Activa 125
  • Yamaha ZR 125
  • The Three Heros

Have fun

Re: Scooter with the best ride quality / suspension?

After going through this thread, I have realised that the best scooter hands down is none other than TVS Jupiter as it ticks all the boxes of comfort, ride quality, weight and FE.

However, I still feel the need to be seeking advice of other BHPians. My wife currently rides an Activa I 2014 model with 25000 kms on the ODO. Earlier my wife’s office commute to and fro used to be just 18-19 kms in Jaipur and Chennai. Now in Bengaluru, with horrible potholes and speed humps and commuting distance to and fro is 32 kms, She is finding the present scooter an ordeal to deal with considering the back breaking traffic of Bengaluru coupled with nonsense roads maintained by BBMP.

The other day we went to a TVS dealer and rode Ntorq and Jupiter. Wife said the power in Ntorq is not required and it was heavy for her to handle. Then comes Jupiter, she said the weight was fine. However, height of the scooter was a bit too much for her liking, but the ride quality was better. Then I also rode Jupiter and Ntorq and found that Ntorq ride quality was not great owing to the speed and the bounce.

She liked the ride quality of Jupiter, however she also said that the power felt like the same as in her existing Activa I. We don’t want to opt for Hero and Honda. Activa’s service cost is higher than my RE CL350 and ASS is very mediocre for Honda.

So we have narrowed down to 2 scooters and we have not had test rides of Fascino and Pleasure.

1. Jupiter ZX Disc Variant (BSVI)
2. Access Disc Variant 125 (BSVI).

We don’t have any idea about Aprilia or other electric stuff. Requesting you folks to shed light on an all round scooter with capacity to soak up the bumps of Bengaluru. FE is not a concern but the storage has to be on the higher side.

Many thanks.

Jupiter it is. We have two in the family and very happy with them. Good suspension, we can feel the difference when we ride our Pleasure. On all the other three fronts too, (service, spares and resale), Jupiter will be better.

From the health perspective, please consider public transport or car pooling etc. for 32 km daily commute for your wife. Or maybe, shifting your residence near her workplace or finding her a new job near to your residence, even for a lower salary.

I appreciate (in fact, salute) the efforts your wife is taking by travelling 32 km everyday on a scooter. This reflects her commitment towards her family and her own aspirations. I am sure, you will never forget these efforts and hardwork. Let this reinforce the base of your love and care for each other. I wish the two of you, more and more success in the days to come.

I don't think any vehicle can soak in the bumps of Bengaluru but the XPulse and the Himalayan come close
I have found the BMTC Volvos to be the best at it though.

Jokes apart, a few points :
- Front suspension of the Access is slightly stiffer than Jupiter.
- Access has 12inch front and 10 inch rear wheels, Jupiter has both 12inchers.
Both these alter the seating and feel of riding.
- Comfort : Jupiter is better.
- Feel : its personal preference

Storage is similar, the Access might be slightly better but not significant.
Aprilias and electrics don't match either of these two in comfort

Take a TD of the Access too if you haven't.
But the Jupiter fits your requirements perfectly.

Good Luck

Jupiter any day, however did she test ride the 6g? The 110 and the 125 have new suspension set up. Maybe you can do a TD just for the sake of comparison.
I too am in the market for a scoot. The only thing that is keeping me away from the Jupiter is the engine capacity, since I need at least 125cc and above.
Do not look at Aprilia if comfort is on priority, since they have a very hard suspension.

Shown your reply to wifey and she agreed that it has to be Jupiter. Can’t think of making her resign as this is the job which she has secured after her MBA from a top ranking Central University (read BHU) through campus and continuing since then with the same institution. I had been impressing upon her to drive our Jazz, but she says it’s a big car and she needs time to learn driving. If things fall in line and she learns driving then a small car is in the offing for her.

Will do a TR for the for the Activa 125 and see how it goes.

Thanks a ton.
