Re: October 2019: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

The festive season and mostly pre BS6 dispatch numbers are quite interesting. Between September and October, the market's dispatches increased by 1,00,495 units which is a modest 6.07% growth. But if we peel that back a layer, the big winners in October are Bajaj and Honda really. Bajaj grew by 36.77% MoM and contributed 64.87% to the overall market's increase of 1 lakh unit. Honda grew by 7% and contributed 31.76% to the overall market's increase of 1 lakh unit.

If we look further, a few things stand out

Bajaj
  • The Platina jumped by 60.23% to it's highest number of the year.
  • The CT100 grew by 18.74% to it's highest number of the year.
  • The Duke 125 is bringing in good volumes for KTM dealerships despite strong competition from the Yamaha MT15 and other offerings.
  • The Pulsar 125 appears to be eating away at the Pulsar 150's steady sales. Once again, Bajaj doing Bajaj things.
  • The Pulsar 220 soldiers on and grows by 32.62% to its second highest number of the year. For a 11 year old performance offering, these are very impressive numbers.

Harley Davidson
  • No change in MoM total sales but the composition of dispatches has flipped on it's head.
  • Instead of the high volume entry level Street 750, HD dispatched a more of their expensive motorcycles in October. The dealers must be happy.

Hero
  • Mixed month for Hero, really. MoM sales dropped by 2.25% which is 13,521 units despite the venerable Splendor adding 29,585 units.
  • Super Splendor and Glamour were the big losers with the letter going down by 34.06% which is 21,120 units. Maybe the lower dispatches are taking into account the revised Glamour carb and FI that should be out soon.
  • Xpulse 200 is bringing some volumes for Hero in the higher end of their spectrum despite some teething issues.

Honda
  • The best selling Activa outdid itself with the new BS6 version helping Honda sell another 32,334 units MoM. In a market which has grown by 6.07% MoM, Honda has managed a 12.99% growth for the best selling two wheeler in the country.
  • In the premium segment, the CB300R continues to do steady numbers for the year.
  • The Africa Twin sees a big jump, this is likely due to the attractive offers rolled out by Honda dealers recently.
Kawasaki
  • Strong showing all round driven by the booster offer provided by the company.
  • The Ninja 300 proves that a cut price with a slight cut in quality faired Japanese motorcycle can do very well.
  • Who is buying the Ninja 400?
  • Versys 650 had it's best month of the year despite strong competition from Suzuki.
  • Kawasaki dispatched nearly as many ZX10R bikes as they did N1000's (19 vs 20) thus effectively taking out both ends of the litre class spectrum.

Mahindra
  • How are they reporting zero dispatches to SIAM for the Jawa?

Royal Enfield
  • Very strong month for them with a 23.08% MoM growth with an additional 12,664 units.
  • Strong showing from the Classic 350 with a 32.54% jump contributing 9,560 units out of the 12,664 unit growth.
  • The decision to provide a lower priced Bullet 350 also seems to be working with a 24.64% growth that added 3,055 units.
  • The Thunderbird 350 hasnt had a strong H2 for Royal Enfield but the big positive is that the 650 twins continue to provide good numbers. Bear in mind that 50% of the Twins are getting exported so RE must be very happy with the success of the platform.

Suzuki
  • The refreshed 155 twins have done well for Suzuki when you consider their H1 numbers.
  • The 250 twins looked very promising at the launch and Im sure that the dealers must be pleased that Suzuki is able to bring in some sales in the Rs 2L price bracket. A V Strom 250 should be next.
  • The king refuses to go down without a final word. How else can one explain 25 units of the mighty Hayabusa being sold in October 2019? The world has moved on to much faster, lighter and more advanced motorcycles but the Busa outsold all the other big sports bikes.

TVS
  • Modest growth MoM for TVS driven by the Jupiter scooter and Apache platform. I wonder how many of the Apaches being sold are actually based on the 200 platform.

Yamaha
  • A drop of 14.23% MoM marked a forgettable performance. What happened to the Saluto and Saluto RX? Are they getting discontinued?
  • The expensive MT15 does well in the sales charts given its sky high price. One can only wonder how much better it would have sold if Yamaha had priced it more sensibly.
  • A total of 84 dispatches for the Yamaha R3 is excellent, to be honest.

Re: October 2019: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

As usual detailed and fantastic analysis.

Just a thought, considering what may be an eventual influx of electric vehicles, maybe its time to add players like Ather, Okinawa, Hero Electric etc into these numbers. Will be good to see month on month if Electric vehicles are really catching on?

Many thanks for the fantastic effort once again.

Re: October 2019: Two-Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Will it be possible to incorporate the sales figures of EV two wheelers as well? I think there are quite a few brands available now.
