Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

As many have pointed out RD350 remains a legend buts it's RX 100 that had the mass appeal. Don't think there is any other bike that had captured the imagination of the youth for such a long time (even continues to do so now). Acceleration and light weight body helped it's nimble image and popularity, though stability while making sharp braking was a concern. As compared to other 2 wheelers you have to be extra careful while making sharp braking, esp as RX 100 was able to accelerate faster. Other than that aspect it was a perfect bike for the youth. Though I did not own one (my College days were spent on Samurai and later Bullet 350) I loved driving RX100 and RX 135 for the sheer acceleration.

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

I voted for Suzuki Shogun.
I have ridden the Yamaha Rx100, RD 350 and Shogun during the same period as a college kid.

The 14 BHP from 110cc engine was really exhilarating. And - The sound - All black paint theme - The sleek and tall stance.
To me, in comparison, RX100 felt as a start and RD 350 as an extreme - And Shogun felt to be in the sweet spot offering high power and great fun.

Happy to see that this is 3rd ranked in the list. May be due to low awareness and presence of the brand those days.

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

I have voted for the mighty yamaha RD350. Its the motorcycle that has got many firsts to its name. The first proper twin cylinder to be manufactured and sold in India, 1st to have 6 gears, first twin carburated and many more. Still turns heads when ridden and is still brutal. Crazy acceleration and I'm fortunate to own 4 of it. 😁

The other awesome two strokes that come to my mind are
1. RX100
2. Elfield Fury - again had lot of first to its name. Especially the front disks
3. Kinetic honda
4. Rajdoot 175 - my dad had one from 1983 till 1995
5. Explorer - my uncle had it
6. Jawa/Yezdi 350
7. Yezdi Roadking

One of my rides attached here 😊

Voted for RD350, for introducing the performance biking to the noobs we were. A whole new chapter to learn from. 2 Cylinders, Dual exhausts, Dual Carburettors, in-line parallel...

.

Did Not see it on the list and hence voted for Shogun. The KH was the best 2T ever made and I have rode it for 7 years and across the state of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

I voted for RX100, I guess the RX and wheelies for college going kids went hand in hand, especially to impress the fairer sex. But the RTZ wasn’t too bad either, especially in its earlier KB100 “cheetah “avatar. Could give the RX a run for its money as far as I know.

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

Voted Others. I learnt driving in my Dad's 1978 Chetak. Drove this for almost 4 years. Then we upgraded to a 1995 model 2 stroke Chetak. Drove this for almost 4 more years.. all of my pre UG and Undergraduate was in a chetak .. the scooter had a lot of torque and handled like crap as its engine was mounted on one side.. also remeber bending it to the side before starting with the kicker...

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

While RX-100 is the most popular, Bajaj/Kinie the most seen on roads, Yezdi and Shogun the most stunning, most iconic still would be RD-350 hands down. Everyone that knew about it wanted to own one, or at least admired when one passed you. I've owned an RX-135 since 2005, but my vote still goes to the RD.

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

Rx100 it has to be. I had one from 2003 to 2007.
Having said that the Kawasaki 100 & 125 and Suzuki Shogun were noteworthy. I am yet to find a decent Kb100/125

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

Very difficult poll for sure. Wish there was an option for multiple selection. Because: Learnt to ride a bike on a Yezdi Road King and unearthing the shenengians of a Yezdi itself was a herculean task. I still regret selling it off in 2005.
Then, had the privilege of riding a RD 350 and every ride thereafter was like chalk after cheese. So voted for RD.
If mass appeal, reliability and affordable performance are the criteria RX100 is the machine to swear by.
Then again, had the pleasure to experience the underrated Suzuki Shogun and so I decided: It is unfair to select just one 'iconic 2 wheeler in India'.
Cheers

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

The moment I read 2 stroke, the first name was RX100. That's the cult status this bike still carries. Suzuki shogun was a close second. A hoot to drive. But the emotion that RX 100 still brings remains unparalleled. Who says you can't have fun with small engines? Fond memories with the yam. Nostalgia as I type this.

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

Has to be the RX100 - brought performance to the masses. Shogun's little bit of extra performance came at such a cost in terms of mileage and reliability that it was nowhere as practical.

RD350 - nothing could get close to that level of performance, but all that smoke and smell of unburnt engine oil - it did know how to smoke away the rivals :-)

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

When you say iconic 2 stroke, nothing comes in mind except RX100. Although I never owned one, thanks to a couple of seniors in college, I rode it extensively. That sound and that acceleration, not to forget the smoke from exhaust. I did ride an RX-Z of my brother for a few days and it's was a gem of a bike. Sadly it never came in my hands. My uncle, a graduate from Bangalore Engineering College in 80s found a RX100 and still has it.

Re: Which is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle of India?

Voted for the RX-100 as it is the most iconic 2-stroke motorcycle India has ever had. It was a bike accessible to masses and had a persona of it's own. The RD-350 although was an insane machine, it was not something that could be bought and experienced by all.

But to be honest, among all the mentioned bikes the one that was, is and will always remain the closest to my heart is the Suzuki Shaolin. It was the bike on which I learnt how to ride. The first bike I rode to college during graduation days. Was handed over to me by my dad. It was a part of the family for a decade till one fine day we had to sell it. Still regret that decision. This motorcycle was an absolute gem. In 1999, it had and engine with 12 HP of power and 12.3 NM torque, coupled to a 5 speed gearbox. During those times it was way more powerful than the rest and would literally fly through the city upon twisting the accelerator. The exhaust sounded fantastic, not as good as the RX-100 though. Light and nimble, it was the perfect recipe for Pune traffic.

Here is a photo my 1999 Suzuki Shaolin, the best motorcycle I ever owned.

Anindya Chakravarty founder of indiabikes.com along with Ranjan Bharati went around the world on this Shogun in the year 1995 in an attempt to create new world record for circumnavigating the world on the minimum cc motorcycle with a pillion rider.
This shogun can be seen at the automobile heritage museum near Gurgaon.
