Ex-Tesla engineer to launch Prana e-bike in India

According to a media report, Mohanraj Ramaswamy, who has worked with Tesla in the past, plans to launch an electric motorcycle called Prana in India.

The Prana is said to be an electric performance motorcycle. It is likely to be offered in three variants - Class, Grand and Elite. The electric motor powering the Prana is expected to produce 35 Nm of peak torque, while its fixed lithium-ion battery will reportedly offer a maximum range of 126-250 km on a single charge.

The Prana e-bike is said to weigh 160 kg and is claimed to have a top speed of 100 km/h. It could accelerate from 0-60 km/h in under 4 seconds. Reports suggest that the Prana will come with 4 riding modes and could including a reverse mode. The total cost of ownership is expected to be equivalent to a 300cc motorcycle.

It has been reported that the Prana e-bike will be built by Srivaru Motors in Coimbatore. 70% of its parts will be sourced locally. The company plans to build 30,000 units annually. By outsourcing production, the company plans to increase capacity by up to 2 lakh units within 18 months of launch. Initially, 25 retail outlets will be set up before expanding to other part of the country.

Re: Ex-Tesla engineer to launch Prana e-bike in India

Happy to see Indian entrepreneurs budding up in this sector. Hope the support of Government and favorable policies for EVs last longer. However, numbers claimed in their report appears ambitious.

Some of us might remember a product called "TVS Scooty Teenz Electric" launched way back in 2008. A related thread here (TVS Scooty TEENZ (Electric) ...I bought it).

Not just TVS, all major two wheeler manufacturers had vision for EVs. I stay close to Hosur TVS and have friends working there. They say, research on EVs and batteries is on for more than a decade. In fact, as per this report they even have products ready but the business case isn't attractive enough to roll them out.

Best wishes to Mr. Ramaswamy. EVs will eventually be the norm but right now I tend to believe there must be strong reasons for major two wheeler manufacturers shying away from launching albeit ready to roll products sitting in shelves.

Traditional manufacturers are not interested in changing the status quo. They are happy to sell petrol vehicles forever and would be hoping that EVs won't succeed. Its the same across the world from GM to Toyota. Major reasons for more EV models are being developed by these traditional manufacturers are due to either competition like Telsa in US or emission norms in EU, and China.
