2-wheeler sales cross 2 Crore; bikes grow more than scooters

According to a media report, 2-wheeler sales in India crossed the 2 crore mark for the first time in 2018. The segment saw a growth of 13% compared to the previous year.

Motorcycle sales registered a higher growth compared to scooter for the first time in more than a decade. Motorcycle sales grew by 15% to 1.37 crore units, whereas scooter sales grew by 9% to 69.5 lakh units. As a result, the share of motorcycles in the overall 2-wheeler sales increased to 63.8%, while that of scooters dropped from 33.4% in 2017 to 32% in 2018.

Higher motorcycle sales can be attributed to increased demand in rural markets. Higher fuel prices and insurance costs are likely to be the reason why scooter sales have dropped.

People here are preferring Splendor+ these days in comparison to the previous obvious choice of Honda Activa. Fuel prices are taking a huge toll the automatic scooter market, which obviously lacks economical scooters.

Both these trends were very visible during the year IMO. If we leave the sales trend for Nov 2018, growth was positive during the year, and clearly the motorcycles seem to be increasing the gap with respect to scooters.

Scooters -

I think Honda would be concerned, because Scooter = Activa, and they are used to selling more than all the other competitors, combined. Looks like the Activa is finally running out of steam! They've also not been able to apply the scooter success formula to any other brands - new launches like the Grazia seem to be loosing sales fast.

On the other hand, TVS seems to be the biggest gainer in the scooter segment during the year - both their Jupiter and NTorq have been gaining new ground steadily over the year.

Re: 2-wheeler sales cross 2 Crore; bikes grow more than scooters

No surprise! In my immediate circle, no less than a dozen Activa 5G/Activa 125/Grazia (Yes, 12 scooters!!!) have been picked up in the last year alone. All of these scooters have problems associated with quality. So that set the alarm bells ringing in my head. It's not that the others are faring better. Of the 7 NTORQ's picked up by my friends, 2 have issues. Also, they don't seem to be ageing well (the two I'm talking about) with vibration and panel fit issues coming up. One has a cold start issue. Maybe it was a bad batch.

The good vibes are coming from Burgman users and Destini users (Both scooters are not selling in good numbers in Bangalore). Another issue with the Honda Scooter is, when you take it for service it's a 'Kumbh Mela'. People are jostling with each other to give their scooter for service and service is not up to the mark. And how can it be, with numbers so huge? SAs are the most harangued lot. Most service is just water wash/wipe.
