Re: September 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Thank you for the data.
Impressive that for the first time, we crossed 2mio/month mark. Very impressive monthly sales figures for all major OEM expect for Honda. A very solid increase for the pulsar 150.

Two requests: This will significantly improve reading pleasure.
For share of market data: Please sort. Similar to 4W sales presentation.
For graphs, please sort and also please leave space for water mark, Spent quite some time to literally see which legend and which line coincides with.

Thank you!

Thanks for sharing CD.

Seems to be a strong updward trend over the last 2-3 months. 2 million units is pretty huge. Although like the car market , it is pretty skewed with the top 5 itself covering 50%. I guess with Diwali coming up, the next month will be even bigger.

Thanks. Will take care of these next month onwards - have some more additional inputs for improvement myself too, which I couldn't incorporate due to time limitations this month.

Re: September 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Motorcycles in India is a HUGE market and is growing aggressively despite global economic turbulence.

Given the mouth watering market scope, the state of affairs of Honda is pathetic. It is high time to retrospect their strategy if they have any for India. Can they survive merely on Activa ? Wonder what stops them from bringing the good ones they sell abroad. In a way this is doing good, as what they say in Cricket, You miss I hit! Gives opportunity to indigenous players like TVS and Bajaj.

Thanks for sharing

True. And those top five products have been in the market forever as well, except for Jupiter which is a more recent entry.

Two sides to the Activa story -

1. Pro Honda - Activa is selling almost as much as ALL other scooters combined, including the in-house competition. Honda has obviously kept up with market expectations -

2. Against Honda - The company is heavily dependant on the Activa, and unable to extent the same success story to other products. Also, extremely reactive rather than innovative in the Indian market - not using their dominant position to expand their product portfolio further.

Re: September 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Top 10 Motorcycles by revenue, based on the lowest ex-showroom price variant -

September 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis-top20revenue.png
  • Activa brings in more money than Splendor, even though the latter may sell more numbers.
  • Hero however has many products bringing in money.
  • RE Classic 350 may be 14th when it comes to sales figures. Bring the price into the equation - it jumps up to 4th position.
  • Classic 350 is also the only bike in the Top 20 sales list (By sales numbers) to command a 6 digit ex-showroom figure. The next up is the Apache series, which is atleast 50k cheaper.

Re: September 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Surprised to see below things:
1. Versys 650 has no dispatch from factory for 4months consecutively! Especially when Ninja 400 and Ninja 1000 have got decent volumes.
2. Uptick in Ninja 300 (>300units).
3. Honda Unicorn 160 is dead already?
4. Suzuki Access showing higher volumes inspire of new launches (Ntorq, Grazia, Bergman). Just shows how the scooter market is increasing!

Versys took a bit hit with Ninja 1000 and Vulcan S stealing sales away. Will have an even tougher time now with the VStrom 650 for competition.

Initial months for the localized price-cut 300.

Honda realized it way back that the 160 won't be the successor to the proven 150, hence the discontinued old model was brought up - and it's doing good once again.

Proof that Indians opt for the old and tested versions when it comes to the mass motorcycle market. Almost no new entrants in the Top 20, except for maybe Jupiter (relatively new).

The plain looking no-nonsense scooters have better market potential here. Activa, Jupiter, Access - all outsell the sportier ones like NTorq, Grazia, Burgman, Dio etc.

Re: September 2018: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Looking at the sales number difference between Bajaj and the other top performers, Bajaj badly needs a gearless scooter in their line up. I am not sure why they arent as serious about it. It is a huge market.

Not just Versys 650, even Z650 & Vulcan S show zero dispatches in last 4 months; is something wrong with data?
