Re: Yamaha FZ25 : An Owner's Point of View

Got the 4th year service done at 7,300 km

When the Liquimoly was drained during the oil change after riding for 2000+ km, I must say the oil was nearly as good as new! It has not even turned black! It retained 80% of it's color. Changed the oil because it aged just over an year. Else this oil can easily do 5k+ km.
But as my bike is hardly used for 2000-2500 km per year, using the Liquimoly was an overkill. So this time I saved money and went for the Yamaha-Lube sporty premium (Full synthetic). I have used this engine oil before, & the result was satisfactory.

Apart from engine oil, the other parts changed were the oil filter and the air-filter. A thorough washing was done along with cleaning and lubing the chain.

The front and rear brake pads are still stock and are good to go. The front fork oil seals are also holding well, there are no leakage.
Total damage to pocket- Rs 1800.

Sharing few pics from the weekend rides-

Re: Yamaha FZ25 : An Owner's Point of View

Today is the 5th Birthday of my FZ25!

Time flies. It feels like, I took the delivery of this bike just few months back! But that few months is actually 60 months! Sadly the odo is just at 8,000 km. I ride really less. The monthly running is in a range of 100-150 km only. I wish, I could have munched much more miles with this bike!

All I can say is, all this 8,000 km was fun riding this bike.

Happy happies, Bikey. Thanks for being a part of our many local adventures when the Kolkata traffic knocked the wind out of our sails.

While I cannot ride a two-wheeler even at gunpoint, thanks for making me comfortable on the pillion!

Re: Yamaha FZ25 : An Owner's Point of View

Sorry to sound like a buffoon but does your bike have a metal tank? I took a test ride of the FZ25 and was shocked to find it had a fiberglass(very plasticky looking) tank! Apparently this is the norm now on all their motorcycles including the regular FZ. Not sure what to think of this trend tbh

It is not possible (or expensive ?) to fabricate complex metal structures and hence on modern machines, the metal fuel tank is covered by a plastic shroud. The rear tailgate of the XUV700 has a complex design, including complex tail light and hence the tailgate is made of plastic. The CB300R has a metal fuel tank (picture below) and it is covered by a plastic shroud.
Simple fuel tank shapes continue to use metal

Re: Yamaha FZ25 : An Owner's Point of View

People who own the FZ25, I have some questions:

1. How has your experience with Yamaha's service centers and the longevity of the FZ25 been? People in the Gixxer 250 are reporting issues with vibrations after just 10k kilometers and lackadaisical attitude from SVC personnel. How has your experience been with Yamaha in this context?

2. How are the headlights? I took a TD of the FZ25 recently and was not particularly impressed by them. I don't feel they'd do much good on highways; what do you think?

Does the FZ25 have a metal fuel tank under the plastic one? Any way to find out?

I have seen one FZ in the service centre with the plastic shroud removed for servicing. It has a metal tank underneath. I don't think there are any motorcycles with plastic fuel tank. I am happy to get corrected if I am wrong. Here is one screenshot from YouTube.

1. Can't really comment on service centers as I never went back after the first service. I get any and all jobs done at another garage owned by a friend of mine. Longevity wise, no issues, mine has done 13k, a friend's has done 40k, no problems for either of us. Minor vibrations sure, but nothing major, bike runs fine, just as peppy as it always was, a few odd sounds sure, but nothing major. The tappet sound will always be there for company btw.

2. The headlights on the older BS4, as in this thread, are unfortunately completely useless, the low beam is fine, however the high beam might as well not exist. Things are much better with the newer BS6 version, however, an upgrade is rather expensive as the headlight assembly alone costs something like 14.5k. I just replaced my entire headlight with a himalayan one, and no problems since. Much cheaper and more options vis a vis bulbs.

Apologies for the late reply. Now only I went through this thread again after a year(If I remember correctly). I am a 2017 Fazer25 owner. Completed 5 years with this bike and ODO is at 48K ish. Hope still this will be of help despite I am replying late.

- In my experience, Yamaha ASC is still not good enough but their Blue Square showrooms and ASCs are a little bit better than the normal ones. At least in terms of how they treat you. But the motorcycle is very reliable. I haven't faced any major problems with mine. Do the periodic maintenance on time and then this little beast will treat you with a rewarding ride.

- BS4 headlights are only good in pitch dark. Otherwise auxiliary light is mandatory. I cannot really comment on the BS6 ones as I haven't ridden one. But expect a slightly better headlight performance compared to BS4. But you can always fit an auxiliary light which will solve the problem. I went with Maddog SoutX and it's really good.

Re: Yamaha FZ25 : An Owner's Point of View

Hello all, I'm back again with my FZ25 BS6. Completed 1000 kilometers and got the first service done. Have the following questions.

1. At 6-7k RPM when accelerating, the engine is making a strange sound that was not present before the service. It sounds like a series of clicks in quick succession kind of like taktaktaktaktak. I'm not sure if its the sound of air being pulled in via the filter or something wrong with the engine.

2. When the old oil was drained I felt that amount that came out was very little. Considering that the bike takes 1350 ml of oil it should have been more. Mechanic tells its normal for the bike to drain less than normal amount oil in the first service. (Not sure if srs).

3. I am considering getting a center stand installed, for doing small maintenance jobs myself. The Yamaha mechanic told me that the FZ150 V2 stand will fit. He even got a piece and placed it on the bracket, and it appeared to fit perfectly. I am not sure if there are any negatives to this. Anyone here tried putting an FZ center stand on the FZ25?

First of all congrats on your new bike. Hope to see few pics of your new ride soon!
How good is the headlight in your Fz25? In our 1st gen FZ25, the headlight is just pathetic!

It may be the tappet. Get the valve clearance checked once, if required get it adjusted. This was a common issue in the 1st gen Fz25. Many owners complained about a coin ringing sound. Later on it was said as normal for this particular engine! Just search coin ringing sound from Yamaha Fz25 in Google, you will get many links. Still I will suggest you to get this checked, specially because you have a doubt that your bike consumed engine oil.

I have not faced this. Maybe because some oil was retained back in the old oil filter? In some cases a new engine may consume a bit of oil.
So I will suggest you to keep checking the engine oil level from the dip stick, every 500 km. Unless your bike emits bluish white smoke or oil accumulates on the spark plug, I see no reasons to worry.

My FZ25 came with a center stand. It should be safer to try the center stand from the first gen Fz25 itself!

Thanks a lot for your replies. I haven't had a chance to check back with the SVC since I've been caught up with work. I'll check if they have an FZ25 center stand, although I doubt they will.

As for the pics, here you go. After reading your comment, I decided to head out of the city and onto a highway to click some headlight pics.

Headlight throw:

Overall I'd say the head lights are okay. In the city they do well, no issues. In pitch dark, the performance is just okay - they look quite bright at standstill but if you're riding on a highway at 50 kph, you start wishing you had some more illumination. But then Yamaha never marketed this as a highway tourer so not their problem.
The parking lights (LED element above the projector) are quite a nice addition, good way to light up your garage without turning on the main lights.

Here's a small video I made to give people an idea of the light throw and spread:

I have got the centre stand of FZS (FZ150) fitted on my FZ25 BS6 Moto GP Edition, it is the same as it is a shared part. No problem even after 10k kms of riding after fitment of the centre stand. FZ25 centre stand was not available even after 1.5 months from ordering. So I had to go that way. You can watch YouTube videos of installation of the same.
