MARKET SHARE ANALYSIS

The below master chart signifies the market share each manufacturer holds month-on-month (M-o-M)

March 2017: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis-6.-market-share-trend.jpg

What I have done below is, split the data manufacturer wise so that a clearer picture is given as to how much of their marketing and products influence the share month-on-month.

Re: March 2017: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks for the numbers. Activa continues to grow. Am looking at the Jupiter for my wife and happy to see it achieve constant 50k numbers too.

Manufacturers Sales Trend and Market Share table - The figures for Kawasaki and Triumph look to have been reversed.

152 Ninja 650's sold look to be the most ever in a single month ever since they launched. The discount price of 1 lakh helped a lot, I guess.

Great compilation. Thanks for sharing.

There seems to be a marginal error, the sales figures of Kawasaki and Triumph for few months are interchanged.

Re: March 2017: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

March Sales should not be analysed much in terms of market growth or revival. The BSIII deadline and the consequent sales of close to half a million bikes in the last 2-3 days would have resulted in huge spike of sales for some companies. I was thinking that Bajaj would be the most affected since they were boasting that they don't have much BSIII in their inventory. But MoM sales indicate that Honda was the biggest loser at least in terms of number of vehicles in Red and people were busy lapping up other bikes with huge discounts. Does that mean Honda was the company that had duly incorporated the deadline? April should be very interesting to see.

One Needs to Understand:

SIAM Numbers are NOT Sales (Retails) for the Month but Dispatches to Dealers (Wholesales) for that particular month

Re: March 2017: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

Little surprised by the overall numbers. As per reports 500,000-600,000 units were sold in the last 2-3 days of March. Of course, the number here reflect dealer dispatches and not the actual sales, but to enable that spike in sales, manufacturers would have had to dump all the BS III stocks and those should have reflected in the numbers. an overall rise of ~100,000 does not reflect that spike.

Other potential reason could be that these spike in sales came from the inventory dealer had built up over several months. Which seems a little unlikely especially for the top selling models.

For the efforts put by the company, Mahindra is struggling badly in the 2-wheeler market.

Sales of Royal Enfield's 500 CC models have drastically reduced. Is it Dominar effect?

It was obvious to me the day when Mahindra decided to Take on the 2 Juggernauts/Legendary brands of the industry, namely the

1. "Splendor/Passion" with "More Features" as USP - with its Centuro

2. "Activa" - with its Rodeo/Duro/Gusto (etc.) with no visible USP (except maybe long waiting list for the Activa, once upon a time)

The Mirage from these two legendary brands generate is that, even 5-10% sales number from these two big players seem enticing enough. But realistically, why would an ultra conservative customer (who buys these two automotive legends) look at something else?

Even cash discounts/ crores spent on TV/Print Ads hasn't helped much.

I would guess it was due to less dealer dispatches during the last few months due to the existing BSIII stocks at the dealer end.

The coming few months would give a clearer picture.

I think the Dominar was never a competition to the RE family. IMO REs are now the Pulsars of previous generations. Everyone had one. Slowly people are accepting this and moving towards other touring bikes (atleast the riding stance), recently UM (United motors) have launched their Renegade series that seem to be picking the market quickly. People want change, period.
RE have to come up with more ideas, right now they just seem to be changing colour schemes, and run on the same mill on all trims.
I owned an Electra 5s during 2006-07 which I had to sell for small little nagging issues, not much has changed since then.

Re: March 2017: Two Wheeler Sales Figures & Analysis

As always, thanks for putting this together!

- Dominar continues its onslaught! Very well deserved
- Good show from the KTM 390, even outsold the 250. next month should see even better numbers IMO
- Himalayan : a measly 50 odd copies moved. Quality issues coming back to bite RE in the butt. High time they get serious about making products that don't break if you look at them wrong
- Street 750 does decent numbers. Fat Boy is another surprise. Pretty sure Street Rods are dispatches to dealers and not actual purchase by customers. IIRC, the test rides were to begin from today

Although its some time away, (Like many on the forum) I am eager for KTM to bring on the 390 ADV to yet again shake up this segment. BMW seems to be in a deep slumber. They'll export the 310 but wont sell it here ... what gives?
