Re: Why Enfield Bullet?

Do people like Steam Engines?
Some do.
The same reason exists for liking a Bullet.
(especially the Cast iron one with contact breaker ignition)

Re: Why Enfield Bullet?

My dad bought a Bullet (500 Cc if I remember) when I was 2 or 3 yrs old, sold it when I was in class IX. I remember he would take it to the mechanic more often. He would have knee snap/injury due to the kick rod retort. Finally he parted away with it, I remember it was a very sad separation for all of us. If I were any younger or a little more into bikes than Splendors or KB100s I would not have let it go.
We were living in small towns in Andhra, where a Bullet is a rare sight. People would think my father as a cop and would salaam him all the way home.
I asked him the same question a few days ago - 'Why a Bullet?'. His answer was simple, 'can't tell why'.
Bullet is a bullet. I am now contemplating on my next ride.

Re: Why Enfield Bullet?

Hello fellow Enfiled owners.. This is my first post here..
My status - I have booked a DS 500 a fews ago - and have been painfully waiting for the delivery.
My reason for Enfield - Nostalgia and Nostalgia. My dad used to ride 2 of them. My childhood memories are ones spent on sitting on the tank of my dad's bullet or my uncle's during the many super rides. My dad even used to do Mumbai-Nasik trips back in late 70s with all of us on them (Dad, Mom, Me and my bro).
I have never rode on bikes. Always had this desire to buy one but had given up on owning one due to more practical reasons.
But now that I am nearing 40, couldn't hold it no more :-)
Thanks to my wife, who sensed it and gifted me the same (the booking of the bike) on my birthday.

This thread has some amazing writeups. Just the encouragement I needed. :-) Thank you friends!
Am sure i will have more reasons to contribute when my dream machine arrives.. Keep writing till then my friends..

Plus 1 to this also & the last line caught my attention particularly . The mid age makes one do frantic attempts to complete long wished dreams . I am one of them .

Bullet was always my childhood / teenage fantasy.

I dont care to defend it technically . There could be better options in every department ,say bhp, torque , fit finsh , Fuel efficiency etc . But NONE can be a Bullet

In my case the above three are common , life is not about specifications & technological advances alone , its about feelings mostly .

Some one loves a certain girl , why ?? why not the left or right one ??

Thanks for understanding Sudarshan. And well said. Yup, as we approach the mid-age, it does make you reach out to fulfill those long standing desires (ofcourse provided they are legitimate ones :-))

Re: Why Enfield Bullet?

Bullet for me gives the aura of a simpler life, a time where in life was not measured in minutes, where a bike ride meant sampling the wind, smelling the flowers, taking in the scenery and feeling the warm sunshine all accompanied by a gentle thump of the engine, unstressed and unhurried at a calm 60kmph. Riding my Bullet is like a de stress session, I dont care what the world is doing, who is hurrying by, I can set my own course and own speeds and travel across India, with the journey being the destination.
No other bike gives me this feeling.
As someone aptly put it, a bullet is like a steam locomotive or a piston engined biplane, it its mechanical, simple and a pleasure to ride.

But you can do these things on Modern bikes as well, and not to mention they will be faster and easier to manage.

RE will be the last motorcycle i would want to take off the road, try that with a Duke and it will be totally different experience

Re: Why Enfield Bullet?

More than 10 years ago, I had an Austrian boss who became enamored of the Classic Royal Enfield Bullet after he saw my ride. He bugged me to buy him a second hand bullet which I did. When I asked him what made him opt for an 'ancient' British made motorcycle when his native country and Germany are in the leading front for marquee motorcycles and cars.

He said " The thump takes you back to your mother's womb - the dup dup rhythmic beat resembling the heartbeat of your mother. ".

Just a few months back, I stopped a British woman riding a Bullet near Pondicherry ( on the outskirts of Pondy in the ECR you will find lots of European expats riding mostly Bullets) and asked her "Why a Bullet ?".

She said - " I bet you own a Bullet. You can't get it out of your system. Can you ? "

Re: Why Enfield Bullet?

A bullet is a bullet; It beats like the sound coming from deep inside of me.

The Bullet pierces your heart and, leaves it vulnerable and wrung.

When we try to control it, it destroys us. When we try to imprison it, it enslaves us. When we try to understand it, it leaves us feeling lost and confused.

Owning a Bullet is like love. It does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Owing a Bullet is a battle, it is love it is a war; owning a bullet is a growing up. And I am still growing.

Re: Why Enfield Bullet?

My brother in law had sold his Bullet 5 years back, and bought a new one last year because of 'nostalgia'. He is disappointed, mainly due to the stiff ride of the new Bullet.

Re: Why Enfield Bullet?

I would have been a bullet owner by 10 years now. Had i made the choice back in 2003, when i just got my first job and was all set to buy my first ever motorbike. I was 20 then and with not much moolah at hand and with a relatively high down payment at that time I had to opt out and go for a pulsar 150 classic (non DTSi), which I do not regret, loved it and still have it with me. it is just as good as it was then...

I now have the opportunity to attempt to get a bull yet again, after 10 years. and this time its a different scene altogether, I have the money, but I lack the patience to wait for 6-8 months for the Electra 350 I booked earlier this month.

I had tried many bullets. Std 350CI, CL500, CL350, Electra 350UCE and loved each one of them. Hope to get my bull sooner than 6-8 months...
