MapMyIndia launches a GPS tracker for motorcycles

MapmyIndia has launched a GPS tracking device for motorcycles. Called Rover Bike, this device is loaded with built-in GPS and Internet connectivity, along with MapmyIndia's maps and location technologies.

Using Rover Bike, users can stay connected with their bikes through a mobile app. This app is available on iOS, Android as well as Windows platforms. Through this hardware-software integration, Rover Bike sends real-time information regarding the bike's location, driving direction and speed to the user's smartphone. It also records all parameters of a riding trip that can then be accessed later.

Rover Bike can also send alerts and information about ignition on/off, over-speeding and prolonged idling. It even provides an option to set up a geo-fence for the bike, so that whenever it is leaving from or arriving at a particular location, the user is informed through the app. Additionally, the Rover Bike software can remind the user about impending servicing intervals and insurance expiry dates through the mobile app, emails and SMS.

The app further has a digital vault section where the users can store soft copies of important documents like driving license, registration certificate, insurance policy, pollution certificate etc. It also provides turn by turn directions to the bike, making it easy to find your bike in a crowded mall parking.

MapmyIndia has launched Rover Bike at a price of Rs. 3990. This includes the device and SIM charges. Meanwhile, service for the device is on a subscription basis and is priced at Rs. 2400/- for a year. The hardware comes with a 12-month manufacturer warranty. Interested riders can buy Rover Bike GPS tracker from the MapmyIndia online store. It will also be available at bike dealerships and accessory shops across the country.

Extremely steep pricing.

There may be limited takers essentially from the high end / premium segment. Even those owners will think twice because of recurring cost.

GPS tracking should be cost effective, MMI's recurring cost is more than the annual insurance of sub 1 Lac bike.

I have serious doubts of its success. Halo product !

Now one of the few devices that still offers something for Windows platform mobiles, but very steep on the pricing. I've tried the MMI map on my Windows phone and they don't have an offline version. The cost of the unit seems reasonable, but the annual subscription is very steep. It looks like a it's going to go the "TrailBlazer" way.
