re: BMW G310R-based Adventure motorcycle. EDIT: Unveiled at EICMA 2016

Recently met a motorcycle journalist who was at Intermot 2016 and will be at EICMA too.

From his talks with the BMW folks, it looks the ADV variant is still quite far from launch in India. Also the pricing seems to be on the premium side. It looks like BMW wants to undercut the Jap CBU offerings ala Z250, Ninja300, R3 & MT03 and not the KTMs despite these being made locally by TVS. I guess the thought behind this is retain the "premium image" of brand.

Of course none of this is confirmed news, and we will know about India launches only in 2017. At least we will have confirmed news about the existence of the ADV variant at EICMA.

BMW launches today the new G 310 GS, a highly contemporary product with a level of versatility.

BMW launches today the new G 310 GS, a highly contemporary product with a level of versatility. BMW describes the G 310 GS as “nimble and agile in city traffic while over light terrain it is supremely robust.”

Typical GS design.

The BMW G 310 GS can be identified as a genuine GS at first sight. With its characteristic, high front fender, striking flyline and short, high rear, the BMW G 310 GS features classic elements of its big GS sibling models. Its compact proportions with a short wheelbase, a 19-inch front wheel and extended spring travel make for a typical upright posture, promising an agile, nimble riding response.

BMW G 310 GS 6 750x562

Like the G 310 R, the G 310 GS is also designed for the world market. It takes diverse fuel qualities as well as meeting all emissions standards and local requirements. It is at home on all the roads of the world, bringing the hallmark BMW premium aspirations to the segment below 500 cc.

The centerpiece of the new BMW G 310 GS is the 313 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine known from the G 310 R with four valves and two overhead camshafts together with electronic fuel injection. The capacity of 313 cc results from a bore of 80 millimeters and a stroke of 62.1 millimeters.

BMW G 310 GS 18 750x562

A salient feature of the single-cylinder engine in the G 310 GS is the fact that its cylinder is tilted to the rear and its cylinder head is rotated by 180 degrees: intake at the front, outlet at the rear. This configuration follows the logic of a straight, power-enhancing supply of fresh air-fuel mixture and also has positive consequences in terms of the bike’s architecture. With an output of 25 kW (34 hp) at 9 500 rpm and a maximum torque of 28 Nm at 7 500 rpm, the engine of the new G 310 GS is the ideal partner for dynamic riding pleasure, in conjunction with the low unladen weight of 169.5 kilograms according to DIN.

BMW-G-310-GS-1

The new G 310 GS provides a relaxed seating position that enables carefree motorcycling pleasure both on the road and during excursions along forest paths and gravel tracks. As is characteristic of BMW Motorrad, all switches and controls are simple and secure to handle. Great importance was attached to simple and safe operation, taking into account the most diverse rider anatomies.

Bridge-type tubular spaceframe, upside-down fork and long swinging arm for a high degree of ride stability, a precise steering response and light handling.

BMW-G-310-GS-16

In terms of its suspension, the new G 310 GS is similar to the G 310 R roadster in using a tubular steel spaceframe with bolt-on rear section that combines torsional rigidity with robust quality. Given its good stiffness balance, this provides the basis for excellent ride stability and a precise steering response. The front wheel suspension is taken care of by a solid upside-down fork while at the rear there is an aluminium swinging arm in conjunction with a spring strut that is mounted on it directly.

High-performance brake system, ABS as standard and multifunction instrument cluster. Like all BMW motorcycles, the new G 310 GS comes with ABS as standard. It combines a high-performance brake system with 2-channel ABS for efficient deceleration and short braking distances. For use over light terrain the ABS in the new G 310 GS can be conveniently deactivated at the press of a button if required. The G 310 GS instrument cluster has a large liquid crystal display that offers excellent clarity and a wide range of information.

BMW-G-310-GS-13

Like the G 310 R, the G 310 GS represents everything that BMW stands for: progressiveness, outstanding quality and of course many years of carefree partnership with its owner. Excellent components and materials come together to make it a real all-rounder. The G 310 GS is the GS below 500 cc, providing worldwide entry to the premium world of BMW Motorrad.

re: BMW G310R-based Adventure motorcycle. EDIT: Unveiled at EICMA 2016

In my humble opinion, the BMW G 310 R looks quite staid. But, this, the BMW G 310 GS is a smasher!

Between the BMW G 310 GS, the new Duke 390, and the TVS Akula 310 (all of which are rumoured for a launch in Feb-April 2017), it would be a tough choice for bikers looking to own these beauties.

A very welcome change indeed!

The biggest drawback I feel is the tiny fuel tank, 11 litre's capacity on such a bike is a big joke. It should have at least been 16 ltrs.

Yes, the small tank size is bit worrisome. in the video its said "..very very low fuel consumption" - awaiting more clarity on the FE part".

Looking at the terms used like "urban jungle" / "suburbs" / "gravel roads" / "poor streets" - would it be even a 'mild' off-roader ?

Switchable dual channel ABS is very welcome.

enjoy the videos :

Expected, but disappointing to see an official response saying end 2017.

Was hoping to pick this up next year, really need to replace my ageing 220 before it turns 10 next year.

Especially frustrating given the fact that its produced at Hosur Plant near Bangalore.

BMW G310R-based Adventure motorcycle. EDIT: Unveiled at EICMA 2016

Of the two 313cc engine based models, the G310R and GS, the GS is no doubt the more impressive design. Both are very different in purpose and appeal, but my guess is an Adventure bike lover will be happier with his GS 310 purchase than a naked bike lover with his G310R - this is when taking both form and function in consideration.

Just my guess..

Re: BMW G310R-based Adventure motorcycle. EDIT: Unveiled at EICMA 2016

Do you also know this is the only adventure bike in its category AND it could very well be the segment leader? Kudos to BMW for being brave. As much as I like the bike a few things worth noting:

After service and sales is a major concern.
If you may not know BMW spares are expensive. Check global forums.
The fuel tank is a disappointment. Should've at least been 15L.

The points to watch out for:

Ride quality.
GS adventure edition. All black!
All possible after market accessories...crash guards, panniers, steel rims, GPS mounts, etc.

Else, this baby GS is all ready to set the roads on fire. Bring on the adventures. It's a superb time to be motorcycling!

On the contrary, it has two rivals in the form of the Suzuki VStrom 650 and Kawasaki Versys 300, both of which got launched at EICMA this year along with the 310 GS.

Unless you were talking about the Indian market only, then possibly out of this trio we may only see the BMW here.

The real contender to BMW's offering both in terms of cost and capability will be the KTM 390ADV *whenever that happens*. From the looks of it that is not coming until 2019 almost. However the response the 310GS gets may help in speeding up KTM's 390 ADV project.
