Yamaha readying Saluto 125 cc motorcycle for launch EDIT: Now launched at Rs. 52,000

Yamaha is believed to be gearing up to launch a new 125 cc, commuter motorcycle in India. The Saluto, as it has been named, is expected to be powered by the same 125 cc as the company's other 125 cc offerings - the SS 125 and the YBR 125. This engine produces around 11 bhp and 10.4 Nm of torque and is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Yamaha will hope that its new bike will help it increase its market share in the 125 cc motorcycle segment.

The spy image of the Saluto shows the bike with a telescopic front fork suspension and dual shocks at the rear, black alloy wheels, blackened engine and a long contoured seat. The bike is devoid of any fancy graphics. Yamaha has given it a wind deflector and silver-coloured side panel and grab rail.

Media reports suggest that the Saluto will be priced close to Rs. 60,000 (ex-showroom). More details on the motorcycle are awaited.

A royal salute to the guys at Yamaha who come up with these names

I can't remember any of the names of Yamaha bikes of late other than R15 and FZ. I don't remember seeing them on road either!

I don't think this will change with the Saluto

Another disaster waiting for Yamaha India in the commuter/Executive segment. They'll never learn. Forget them. I feel pity for the poor owners who tends to choose these bikes. They will just come & go. No one stocks spares, not even the Yamaha Dealerships, in the end making it difficult to maintain these kind of bikes & scrapping them. No one remembers the Old YBX, YBR, old Fazer,Libero,G5 etc etc.

+1
Neither the engine nor the looks differentiate this 'new' bike from the existing range of products. How did Yamaha expect to increase the market share with this product?

I feel this may click for the ones who are looking at supplying bikes to their delivery boys or the older gen uncles who are looking at decent spec bike.

Let me tell you all, I see that these bikes have a longer and a stable future. The new gen FZ, Fazer, R Series will come and go. But these commuter bikes are here to stay. The masses would go for these bikes.

I own a Libero from 2005. Absolutely strong, stable and reliable without any rattles or niggles.
Whereas a new gen Pulsar, KTM, Yamaha have a zillion niggles and issues, which are not just expensive to repair, but are a big question on the quality of these superbikes sold in India atleast.

There are 2 segments - Superbikes & Commuter.
I think if this is priced well in the 45-50k range, should serve as a hot commuter bike.

+1 to everything you said!! Yamaha commuters from yesteryear keep going on and on without major complaints and are truly bullet proof. But the sore point of this bike is going to be its expected price point of 60k ex showroom which in a city like Bangalore will become an expensive proposition for folks looking for a robust, VFM commuter bike.

Is this a detuned version of the 125 cc block? The previous 125cc engines from Yamaha used to produce 11 BHP

Gladiator was much better looking than this IMO. Looks like a face-dropped SS 125.
Also now the 125 cc lineup includes - YBR, SS and Saluto. Confusions all round.
With Saluto being the lesser powered of the 3. Same on the footsteps of Sz 150 and Crux in for Alba 100.

Somehow it all seems like desperate attempts rather than being exclusive.
