re: OMG! 3rd RX at home - 1998 Yamaha RX135 4S. EDIT: Restoration completed!

Something is going against me. It is more than a year I couldn't start working on this project. A couple of unavoidable projects for my close friends and other important commitments kept me away from this bike. It is standing in this condition for past 2 months
OMG! 3rd RX at home - 1998 Yamaha RX135 4S. EDIT: Restoration completed!-img_20151003_175316.jpg

Had a plan to resume the job this weekend, but got an unavoidable request for another RX restoration

This bike belong to my friend and ex-colleague. I couldn't say 'No' to his request. It's time to start another thread.

Looking forward to this one, Mr. Boss.

What is the condition of the bike mechanically?
What is the plan for the restoration?

The bike looks complete and almost completely original.
With the experience of so many RX restorations in the past, I think this one should not be too difficult for you.
Good luck!

This bike was completely restored in end of 2011 and used till mid of 2014 without any issues. On a fine day when I rode this bike I felt something is wrong and later we found the piston started seizing due to lack of 2T oil supply Kept aside without touching it due to various other commitments.
Let me start a new thread on this regard, with more details and plans.

re: OMG! 3rd RX at home - 1998 Yamaha RX135 4S. EDIT: Restoration completed!

Finally I managed to convince my friend that his bike will be restored after completing mine Mean time I gave my RXG for him to use until his bike is back to shape.

Coming back to the subject, still I'm confused on the Cafe Racer concept. This is what I had in mind
OMG! 3rd RX at home - 1998 Yamaha RX135 4S. EDIT: Restoration completed!-2-copy.jpg

But this involves chopping the frame rear end and I'm bit concerned with the same.

I certainly would suggest you do not modify the frame. Instead of a single seat which ends at the rear shock-absorber, get a longer cafe racer seat with a rear seat cowl to cover up the pillion seat.

If you go ahead and chop the frame, there are two potential problems:
(1) You need to revert to an original frame for some reason - RTO creating issues with fitness renewal or you have to sell off the bike or anything at all. Getting new frames from Yamaha is becoming more and more difficult and the supply may soon dry up.

(2) Rigidity of the frame gets compromised - the RX frame is very light and once you chop an area, especially close to the rear suspension mount which sees a lot of movement and resultant forces, it may create too much flex or worst case, break your frame.

Why not go for something like this? Just search for cafe racer images on Google and you will get a lot of ideas for your project. Looking forward to the progress and the end result!

Even I'm not convinced in chopping the frame. Single long seat seem to be one of the solution. OTOH few people are against Cafe racer modification. Instead they ask me to do performance modification with stock looks or simple modification. Scratching my head now.

Everyone has an opinion. Take what you like and leave the rest.

It is your bike and your dream. Do what your heart tells you and see it through to perfection. Simple.

If you yourself are in two minds about the cafe racer modification, make sure that you don't alter the frame in any way. All the other modifications can be reversed anytime.

Cheers

Mr.Boss, did you get going on this project yet? It would be nice to see another RX taking shape again.

Like I said before, there will always be some bad luck following this project
I'm out of country currently and I will be returning back by end of Feb'16 only. Once again this project is put on hold.

I am going through the same situation as you are, right now. I have been waiting to build my recently acquired 135, but have to wait till my next trip home.

Anyway, the wait only makes these builds extra sweet!

Managed to spare some time with this bike again.

Dropped the idea of cafe racer modification. After a lot of heart vs mind debate I'm not convinced in chopping the frame of this rare species. This bike will be restored to stock spec.

Bike is already dismantled a few minutes ago and frame, engine case, tank, hubs, fork tubes were sent to painter.

Is there a thread available already? If so share me the link. If not, keep me informed.
PS: Hats off for your dedication and the effort when it comes to 2 strokes.

re: OMG! 3rd RX at home - 1998 Yamaha RX135 4S. EDIT: Restoration completed!

Opened the engine today. It was running on 1st OS piston.

Work done today:
- Cylinder sand blasted
- Rebored to 2nd OS with Goetze piston
- Crank calibrated (with old OE connecting rod)
- Clutch bell rubber bushing replaced
- Center case is cleaned thoroughly and assembled back with new bearing kit (no painting)

I hardly get spare time on evening these days, so spares hunting will happen during next weekend only. Till then mechanic will co-ordinate for getting the things painted and plated.
