General

Kriega is a British brand which manufactures a range of waterproof luggage. The unique design has been provided in such a manner that it can fit the subframe of any motorcycle. The pack/s can easily be mounted/removed by four quick release buckles, and hence no additional securing is required with ropes or bungee cords. Also, since the luggage system is waterproof, no rain covers are required.
The system uses removable alloy hook straps connected to the bag which allow combination of packs to be carried with confidence and convenience. The alloy hooks are made of aircraft grade material which attach to four discreet web loops located on the subframe. These web loops are affixed on the bike and may be left there forever desired. All sizes of bags would buckle up in the same loops.
The product has 10 year warranty.
These bags may be used in multiple combination of sizes depending on the requirement of stuff to be carried. Multiple bags piggy-back on top of each other or may be affixed on either sides depending on the sizes of the same.

Build Quality

The product feels tough and has a 100% waterproof main body which is achieved through the use of a removable inner jacket. The outer zipper pocket is somewhat rain resistant but not water proof.
The outer shell is stitched from cordura and has abrasion resistance reinforcement.
The inner dry pack is white in colour which is a removable tape-lined provision.
The hooks are made of 6061-T6 alloy aircraft grade aluminium.
The Universal System(US) bags have a rear mesh pocket. The material of the mesh is strong and gets a sticky grip on the seat of the motorcycle.

Packing Feasibility

These bags in no way are the floppy kinds. They feel tough and have the rigid character in them. That said, over-stuffing these bags is not possible. They retain their shape vey well and hold the luggage well inside. The bags upto the capacity of 30L open from one side only like a kit-bag and have roll-top closure system. However, the 40L(largest capacity in the series) opens up from both the sides so that the access to the luggage is convenient.
Depending on the luggage to be carried, additional capacity bags may be included.
On a multiple day trip, the mesh pockets provided behind each bag may be used to stow wet garments or the removable shoulder straps provided with the bigger capacity bags to lug them around when taken off the bike.
The design of these bags are very much a personal choice as there are riders who may prefer lateral opening up of the bags for easy packing and accessibility.

Worth the Money?

It is quite subjective...People may find this product a tad expensive than the other luggage systems available in our market.
I have the dirt sack 40L bag too, which I have used on the Tiger, but after using the Kriega I wouldn't use the previous one due to reasons which are personal.
Any damage caused to the bags are covered under warranty, hence it is felt that it is more practical to use these.
Ergo, worth the investment for me!

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

I'm giving away free, a Studds Top Box with the original keys and mounting clamps as I upgraded to a bigger SW Moto Top Box.

The box is in good condition and can be mounted on any bike with a rack. It can easily take one full face helmet. In case any of you are interested, please PM me and you can come and collect from my place. I'm based in Bangalore.

Mods, I hope this is not against TBHP rules as I'm not selling this, rather giving it away free to any enthusiast who can put this to good use.

Installed seaty in my baby scram sort of bike. Made use of drain cell base used in garden and some cable ties for forming a sturdy base to already provided rear rack in my CT125x. The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread-20230225_063339.jpg

Just got this as well for the SM650. I've been using it for a week now. Fits my use case perfectly. Discreet when not being used and blends well into the bike, fitting on the rear seat perfectly. Yet when needed has the right size to carry small things for city use. Overall quite happy with it. The only qualms if any are that I wish it were easily detachable from the mount.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

While my Tiger had the OEM hard case side panniers, I had been meaning to switch to semi rigid soft bags for my Multi. Enter, the SW Motech Sys Bag set up which accommodates up to 40L in each bag. This has finally been supplemented with an SW Motech top box as well now, as of earlier this week.

The advantage of these generic luggage set ups of course is that even when I sell my ADV and buy the next one, this can entirely move onto the next bike, with only model specific pannier mounts etc to be purchased.

The second aspect I like about the SW Motech side bags is that the aluminum plate at the bag sits full time on the bags instead of on the pannier mount. This (IMO) gives the pannier mounts and side profile of the bike a cleaner look than if I were using the Kriega OS / Givi equivalent since on those models the mounting plate sits full time on the pannier mounts, which robs the bike of a clean look when the bags are off the bike. I’m also including a pic of the bike with “just” the pannier mounts to illustrate.

First three pics: the final set up with SW Motech top box and side Sys Bags (L)

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Hi Folks,

I am looking for tail bag for a 2 week ride on my interceptor. My requirements are

Capacity 60-70 liters
Quick mounting ability
Multiple pockets (preferably)

Viaterra claw is a good cheap option, but decided against it because mounting it every day on the ride is crumbersome. Considering their hammerhead model, as well as SW motech drybag 700, but that one has just one large storage area.

Would appreciate recommendations from the community.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Being a fan of Via Terra products I had purchased a trail pack fitted to handle bar. My 7" phone can be easily placed inside with some cards and cash. Quite nice product. As usual being Via Terra I expect it to last for atleast 5 years. Costed me ₹999/-

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

I bought a Viaterra Claw on an impulse last month because I had to shift to Gurgaon from Calcutta, with my bike. Although I wasn’t going to ride down, I figured it would be easy to carry my stuff in a tail bag, take delivery of the bike in Delhi, mount the tail bag and ride off. Did exactly that.

The Claw took swallowed all of my lifetime’s belongings (except my other motorcycle ) easily. This included clothes, files, 2 laptops and their chargers, toiletries, small utensils, shoes, things like a sandwich maker and a hot iron and loads of other stuff. The bike went in the Rajdhani’s luggage van while I carried my luggage with me on the train. Once we were there, I just loaded the tail bag onto the bike, strapped another rucksack on top of it (that had food) and off we went! Really satisfied with my purchase, and worth the price at Rs. 35xx for the full sized (72L) version.

Can you please shed some details on the aluminium top case. Did you see any issues during ride with stability or handling? I am looking to buy one for my on the way 850gs. Primary use is to keep the riding gear safely in the box while going around after parking the bike.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Hello everyone, I’m looking for a system for 5-8days’ worth of luggage - 2-3jeans/trousers, 6-8 tees/shirts, 1pair sneakers, shorts, basic toiletries.
I ride an Interceptor650 with a custom seat and a generic top rack. Considering I’d want to place the luggage on the top rack, what’s a better option - the Viaterra Element tail bag or the Hammerhead?

Very difficult to answer IMHO because both of them matches to your need, perhaps the 45 liter Hammerhead is slightly better than Element as it has 10 liter more, but comes with a steep price tag {which is justified for the value it offers, but not sure if you need all those like to carry like a backpack & conveniences} or if you're happy to open it simple like a soft luggage rack & carry it like a hand luggage with 10 liter less storage that also trades off for an extremely low price {compared to Hammerhead}

But for a week's trip, 35 liters is more than sufficient

PS: You can wear one jean for an entire month, 1 week is nothing; 6-8 tees are really not required, you can still manage with 3-4 + if you roll the tees, the 8 can be easily accommodated

On a slightly related note, and to supplement what Aargee wrote, not sure what kind of social activities you have planned outside your riding time but please do revisit your packing needs. 2 dry fit tees at best should serve riding needs and a couple more dry fits Tees for your ‘off the saddle’ wearing needs.

Similar with jeans. One is more than enough and as an alternative perhaps just one decathlon type trekking style bottom wear which is good to wear on the roads as well as quick to clean and dry. A pair of shorts should do well as a back up.

EDIT: Also search some cool packing videos on YouTube. You’ll be amazed at how space efficient packing can get with a few tricks of the trade. Just like packing all your socks inside your shoes etc etc., rolling tees in a particular way etc.

Re: The Saddle & Tail Bag Review Thread

Thank you @aargee and @axe77. Outside of riding, I’ll be attending a few semi-official do’s.
I quite like the form factor of the Element over the Hammerhead, though the carrying convenience of the latter is better than the former. But if 35ltrs is enough for my need, then definitely the Elements is way more VFM.
I think I’ll head over to a store over the weekend to check both of them out in person.
