DIY : 2T Oil Level Indicator for the Yamaha RX

Here is my Yamaha RX135 thread
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motorb...aha-rx135.html

Though RX 2T tank comes with a transparent window to check low oil level, I always wanted a indicator to show low oil level. Not because of laziness, I may miss to check oil level on busy schedules.

Went in search of TVS Max 100R oil level switch. To my surprise this particular part is out of stock in most of the shops and with TVS dealer too. Finally after 2 days of hunt got what I wanted.

Parts / Tools used:

Oil Level switch from TVS Max 100R
12V bulb (small one)

Candle (to heat the tank)
Knife (to cut the tank, I don't have drilling machine)
m-seal

DIY
a) Fixing the switch in tank
- Drained oil from 2T tank
- Removed the tank and plugged to 2T oil hose to pump
- Cleaned and rinsed with thinner
- Washed with detergent and dried
- Found a suitable are for oil level switch fitment and heated using candle
- Once when the plastic became soft, using knife cut to to few mm smaller than switch dia
- Use a file to finish the hole
- Cleaned the tank again and dried
- Fitted the oil level switch and packed with m-seal

b) Fixing the indicator lamp
I don't want to spoil the stock look by adding any additional lamps. Wanted to instal additional indicator but that should not be visible outside.
- Removed the pilot lamp assembly
- Opened it and found lot of space inside to accommodate one more bulb
- Initially fixed a RED LED in the NEUTRAL lamp compartment
- Though the light intensity is sufficient during night time, I am not satisfied with that
- Removed LED and fitted a small 12V bulb inside Neutral lamp compartment
- Additional bulb will share the -ve from neutral bulb
- Fitted back the assembly

c) Wiring
- Switch gets the input from Indicator flasher
- Output from the switch is connected to the additional bulb in neutral lamp compartment

Working
When the oil level is low (just touches the top of transparent window in tank) additional bulb in neutral lamp compartment starts flashing

I have taken Video of this, but I could not post it now (office laptop doesn't allow to upload the video in Youtube) and the size is close to 20MB

Here are the few snaps (Sorry guys, missed out few snaps, tank with switch assembly, bulb fitment, etc)

Great and useful DIY! My Yamaha's was engine was ruined because my brother rode it without 2T oil in the tank. This would surely help you to track the oil level. This type of Indicator should have been provided @ the first place by Yamaha.

Thanks dude.
Same thing happened with my friend's RX, thank God not a major seizure.

Yes, Yamaha must have provided this, atleast Suzuki / TVS did it.

Mr. Boss, I liked your DIY. Necessity is the mother of all inventions. I would like to post some small suggestions. There are some brake oil reservoirs whose lid houses with such a switch. A hard hunt would have fetched you such a lid with which you could have replaced the existing cap with the lid with a switch.
Also Kinetic Honda has a similar oil level switch as seen in the Max-100 R.
One more idea for avoiding a cut in the tank is to find a way out to cut and paste the reed switch on the existing lid of the 2T oil tank. Hope you would have thought about this before even thinking of cutting a hole in the tank.
Lastly, Silicone gel could be used in place of M-Seal as the gel can stand some amount of vibrations as compared to a M-Seal joint.
Hope your idea motivates more Rx100 owners to carry out this DIY and save their bikes.

Thanks a lot for all your inputs dude. Really useful . I hope this should help other RX owners for better DIY.

If i have to fix the switch in cap, float height is not sufficient. Also I have a spare tank, so if making a hole goes wrong, I can use the other tank.

To be true i may not be able to give you technical details. But i always felt safe with the Premix and the bike always ran good. in my many years of ownership of the 2 Strokers, my Yamaha only seized once cause i failed to check the OIL level in the tank and then i moved to the Premix way like i always did in My chetak and LML out of need than option.

Re: DIY : 2T Oil Level Indicator for the Yamaha RX

Great work there !!!!
Just wanted to also let know you all know that Yamaha had oil level indicator for the RX-Z's from 98 to 2003. I dont know why they didnt implement that to the other RX series.

Re: DIY : 2T Oil Level Indicator for the Yamaha RX

Guys, Please let me know if RXZ oil tank can be fitted in RX135. I'm restoring my other bike, so it will be helpful if I can use the part from RXZ instead of making another DIY
