re: KTM Duke 390 - 375cc, 45 PS, 150 kg

44ps & 139kg means the Duke 390 will literally be twice as powerful as the 200, imagine what this will do to gullible bikers promoting themselves from their 100-150ccs!!!!

scary thought indeed. there are already boatloads of dimwits zipping around on their bullets, cbrs, modded rx, pulsars in my city. especially the classic 500 kids that blast past the traffic with their thunderous exhaust scaring the bejesus out of normal folks. I don't mind of they hurt themselves, its rue innocent folk that these idiots end up hurting, killing that bothers me. with power comes responsibility and as a nation, we are one of the most irresponsible when it comes to driving. there's a reason Spider-Man is not Indian.

Looks like KTM is going to make a fresh release in the Paris show in a few days. I don't know if this is the Duke 390 but it sounds like a single for sure. Also sounds like the highly strung sound (but then all KTMs are highly strung)

Though I have a feel it is a moto 3 bike revving but then it could be the new 300 without an end can ??

Hi,
Were the casualty rates for RDs higher than that for other (Indian) bikes?

I don't really know what the casualty rates for the RDs were, but consider this: 30.5 BHP, tiny tyres and drum brakes at both ends. If a rich wannabe biker ever bought one of these and randomly twisted the accelerator without knowing the implications...

Comparo. KTM 390 Duke vs 200 Duke. Love the orange paintjob on the trellis frame of the 390!

Somehow, the 390 with its different tank paintjob looks a bit diminutive to me. Makes me wonder, is the tank shell really less beefy than the 200, or is it just the pic?

It was not called the Yama-Raj-Doot for nothing. Anyways, the difference here is that even though the KTM makes 10+ horses more than the legendary RD, going by what we got on the 200, it will most probably have the best brakes in the business (which the RD sadly did not).

My extended family on the maternal side have had 3 RDs and 3 near-fatal accidents. (Thanks to Fog + Level Railway crossing / cattle / unscientific speed breaker) So at least in my extended family, the *almost a fatality* rate is 100%.

Obviously, kids from my generation never got to see any of those 3 bikes.

re: KTM Duke 390 - 375cc, 45 PS, 150 kg

This will be one mad mad bike .44 bhp and just 10 kgs more than 200 ! . I don't see any changes apart from engine compared to Duke 200. This will wheelie even before the clutch is released ! ,can't wait to test ride .

They're actually the SAME BODY (well minor strengthening may've been done but mostly the chassis' are identical); your illusion of less beefiness is due to the less vivid color in the 390's tank (black over orange). If the 390 is painted more vividly (I hope it comes with orange wheels and the 200's orange tank and some more orange at the rear) I suppose KTM would have a way to distinguish it from its lesser displacement sibling. Isn't it fascinating that the same chassis/body is used in a 15 PS, 25 PS and now a 45 PS bike ?

On a not-so-related note, my Duke 390 dreams officially stand shattered. Since its the same wheelbase/size/seat, I suppose it will feel as cramped as the Duke 200. Why doesn't a European company which makes bikes for European customers (where 15 year old boys tend to be well above 6') ensure that its bikes are comfortable for us larger/taller riders ? Instead its Indian twin the Pulsar 200NS is the larger/comfier bike (funny part being Indians tend to be shorter than Europeans so it should've been the other way round).

True. Practicality is a word that doesn't exist in the Duke's vocabulary. Quite a few irritants. For shorter people like me (5'6"), the pillion will complain over long distance. Thinking of which the question of the small 11ltr tank (iirc) pops out. Not a friendly tourer, this beast. Will take a lot to tame! I know from the 200 that the Duke never allows you to rest. Its like it constantly wants you to be on the edge, piling on the revs, never letting you relax even for a moment!

Thanks. Yes I know about the same underlying chassis. I merely meant to point out the apparent external bodywork difference (ie outer tank shell). Seems that's a trick of the colour scheme. As far as distinguishing goes, though, just the orange frame does it for me! :-D

Looking closely, one might notice that in the 200 the "DUKE" is sprawled in big letters on the tank sides and the "200" comes in smaller font. Whereas for the 390 its the opposite.

Absolutely. To their credit, the KTM engineers must have given a lot of thought to the design of this nimble, lightweight chassis, so overdesigned it seems when you look at it from lens of the Duke 125. Seems to me they had thought ahead to the 200 and 390 engines right back when. All they must have done for the 390 (over the 200) is to beef up bits and pieces here and there to handle the huge onslaught of 44 horses!
