Thumbs up for GS150R. I have it for past 3 years, and I am still amazed how well it has kept up, touchwood. Have done more than 20,000kms on it, out of which 15,000 or so were on touring, and only 5k in city. No lose parts, not vibrating nuts anywhere. I think only a Suzuki 250 (if at all it comes) can replace it now.

I too considered Unicorn before going for GS150R. I found it too uninvolving, and GS's high seating and huge tank tilted the decision in its favour.

^^I went and saw it at ABT Suzuki, with half a mind to buy it, but they had only one display piece. Next load is expected only on Friday. Price quoted was Rs 74600 and I was offered Rs 9000 for my Splendor. Since I left them undecided, I got a call half an hour ago with a free insurance offer (Rs 1400.00) thrown in to sweeten the deal!

re: The "Splendid" Hero Honda Splendor - 12 years, one lakh KM up!

I guess this thread is the apt one to have a few queries on the Splendor. What could be the reason for low FE on a Splendor? It has done only less than 50k. Taken many times to the local mechanic, but the FE never improved more than 55kmpl. I had been getting 40-45, but then recently the mechanic serviced the carburetor and the FE is bumped to +5. Is that all? What are the major things to check for low FE on the Splendor?

Sorry Gansan to hijack your thread, but this is the best splendor-related thread i could find.
I stay in Kasturi Nagar (near Banaswadi). Could someone suggest a reliable mechanic to whom i could take my beloved splendor. Iam sick of trying out the various A.S.S centers around.

Thank you.

re: The "Splendid" Hero Honda Splendor - 12 years, one lakh KM up!

^^Did you try the A.S.S. (Liberty Motors) at Peenya? That was very good and mine was serviced only by them for five years (2000 - 2005). I am not aware of any good independent workshops.

Incidentally I gave mine to a local garage near my home last week - had known the fellow for years, but never used to think much of his abilities - as I thought since I was either going to overhaul the engine or exchange the bike, I had nothing to lose!

But this worthy has just replaced the timing chain, some oil seals and has totally arrested the oil leak. Plus change of spark plug and engine oil. Also some cosmetic repairs like seat cover etc. Total cost Rs 1850.00. Bike runs very nicely now and after a week when I checked the oil level, there was no noticeable drop! And there is no misfiring now, whereas it used to misfire like crazy whenever I closed the throttle.

This chap says after a month or so he will change the clutch plates and recondition the clutch bell. Then after a few months, change the head/ bore / piston kit. No need to touch the crank case or con rod according to him. Total estimate about Rs 4K. Says the engine will be good to go for another 50K KM!

I am inclined to let him do it now, as I am loathe to let the bike go!

@gansan - Peenya is too far from where i stay. Would prefer someone in Bangalore East area whom i can zip across for any issues/queries,etc.

Btw, what is the average life of a battery. I remember i changed to an Amco one in 2006. And i feel its gone weak now. Should i replace or recharge?

^^ It was a little far away for me too! But the bother was worth it. Life of a battery will be about three to four years - provided it is maintained well and your running is at least 20KM a day.

I also have the same model, which Gansan haves. Do any one have the parts catalog of this model?

^^I suppose the parts catalogue of the Splendor, from the day it was introduced till today, will be the same!

re: The "Splendid" Hero Honda Splendor - 12 years, one lakh KM up!

The cubic capacity is same but still there are changes in splendor.
HH upgraded it according to pollution norms. There was a pipe from exhaust to air filter in later models. (late 2000 onwards).
In some 2006-2007 HH has changed engine oil grade from 20w 40 to 10w 30.
There was also a disc brake model of splendor.
There must be changes in silencer, cylinder head, piston, piston rings, front fork, magneto & spark plug ratings.

The change in oil grade was only to meet the emission norms. I feel that this change was not required. The engine is the same as it was right from the beginning, so if you put in 20W40 as it was before, you'll feel the change in smoothness.

Never knew of the disc brake version. When was that released?

re: The "Splendid" Hero Honda Splendor! 20+ years and 150,000 km up!

I do not remember the year exactly but it I had seen a new one with disc brake (on road & showroom). Perhaps it was there when ‘splendor’ become ‘splendor plus’. As far as I remember showroom life was less than 6 months.

Iam hearing contradictory messages regarding engine oil change. Should it be every 4000 or 6000 kms? The service supervisor said its after 4000 but HH website says 6000.

The Hero-Honda 4T+ oil can used to carry the words "extended drain interval of up to 6000 KM, with regular top-ups in between". But I would advise a 4 month / 3000 KM interval, whatever the oil.

If your owner’s manual recommend 20w 40 grade for engine oil, then there are 2 cases:
1. Drain interval is 2000Kms/ time period specified for any other brand oil
2. Drain intervals is 4000Kms/ time period specified if HH 4T plus 20w 40 is in use.
But now HH 4T plus is out of production so we need to replace oil after 2000Kms with other brands.

If owner’s manual recommend 10w 30 grade oil then drain interval is 6000 Kms/ time specified in manual.
