Re: Formula 1 – A Beginner's Guide

Nicely written thread Silver Knight with all the data compiled in an easy to understand format. It will surely help anyone entering the world of F1. I've been watching F1 for a few years now. I watched season 2 of Drive to Survive (2019 season) but haven't watched season 1 yet as I did not here good reviews on that. Will do when I get time.

Just wanted to mention that yes, on paper, Frank Williams is the team principal of Williams, but it his daughter, Claire Williams who is actually running the team as Frank has now taken a step back, owing to his old age. The team has a rich history and hope they bounce back soon.

To those who are just starting to watch the sport, I suggest watching the drivers and team principals press conference. Also, Sky sports pre and post race shows (will take up a lot of time) have a lot of interesting information in them.

Re: Formula 1 – A Beginner's Guide

Nice compilation mate - lots of effort going into it & very well structured. Well written. Liked reading it.

Been following F1 since the days before Michael Schumacher became a star. And now I feel the days of this "sport" are numbered - at least from a viewer count point of view.

Slightly off topic, but Just noticed it in the press release images posted above for the Haas & the Ferrari. My god look at the rake these cars are running at least for the photo shoots!

Re: Formula 1 – A Beginner's Guide

I picked up F1 2019 on PS4 couple of days before to kill time during the quarantine. This game is so freaking good and pretty close to the actual F1, it gives you so much perspective regarding F1 just like Drive to Survive.

I have been following F1 for almost a decade now and knew it was pretty complex to drive an F1 car but this game makes you realize the crazy amount of Tech in an F1 car.

The game is available for the PC gamers as well. Do give it a try if you have a chance.

For Playstation users, you can opt for free trial. You get to play Australian GP from practice session till Race.

PS: If you haven't played racing on a PS4 controller, this will take some time to get used to the driving, but the feel of the game is worth it.

Very true. A driver winning races is dependent on many factors. The team, the car, teammate, weather, tyres and luck.

Who is a Team Principal?

Team principal is the person who owns and is in charge of a certain constructor during each race weekend. They are also usually responsible for giving out team orders.
A team principal is not necessarily the owner of a constructor (eg Gόnther Steiner for Haas) . They may be shareholders like in the case of Toto Wolff - Mercedes (30%).

Yes you are right mate. And BTB Steiner is one of the most interesting character in the F1 these days for me.

Re: Formula 1 – A Beginner's Guide

Having worked with and seen these guys up close, I can tell you that the amount of precision engineering that goes into building these is insane. Their bases / factories are like surgical clean rooms, and the sheer intensity of what they do is nearly unimaginable.

That best drivers list is highly controversial, and not something I would subscribe to. At the end of it, I still think that rallying requires more outright driving skill than circuit racing.

Tell us more, maybe a thread separately, perhaps?

Re: Formula 1 – A Beginner's Guide

I've worked alongside some of the suppliers and specialists in 'Motorsport Valley' and have ex-colleagues in quite a few of them. F1 development is obviously notches above other race series, but what really amazes is the quantum of difference. I was offered a job by one of the teams, but sadly it shut down. Honestly though, I don't actually follow the races themselves, since I'm more interested in the engineering than the actual driving.

Goddamn. I haven't even bothered to watch F1s and more or less a similar story as yours. Seems, Netflix is having a huge impact. Dunno which to watch now Netflix or F1.

Cheers!

Re: Formula 1 – A Beginner's Guide

My two cents:

Why are there two drivers per team ?

Answer: Because if there were one car per team, then driver's championship would directly lead to constructor's championship. This would be boring. Plus, time and again it is has been witnessed that intra team rivalry has been one of the USP of F1.

True. To add to that -
  1. 2 drivers with different driving styles gather double the data for factory to work on.
  2. Redundancy. With a single car - if there is a mechanical failure you'll suddenly score 0 points altogether.
  3. And - that also means there is 0 TV and live visibility for the people who paid for all those stickers on the car via sponsorship deals. Before it is a sport, F1 is about all big money & the sponsors want to get returns for their investments.
  4. With 2 drivers of slightly different attitudes & styles, the team potentially gets more fan following. A polarizing single driver who might not be to people's tastes - can end up turning away a lot of fans of a team to a different one. And its hard to bring them back afterwards.

Considering there is no F1 for the foreseeable future, the choice is simple. Netflix and chill in Ooty
