Vijay Mallya resigns as FMSCI representative to FIA

Vijay Mallya has resigned from the position of Federation of Motor Sports Club of India (FMSCI) representative to the FIA. He submitted his resignation ahead of FIA's World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) meeting in June following an intervention by the Sports Ministry.

The owner of Force India F1 Team and the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines is wanted on charges of fraud and tax evasion and is facing extradition.

Mallya's replacement will be appointed in December when the current tenure is over. In the meantime, former FMSCI president Vicky Chandhok has been deputed for the job.

Earlier, Vijay Mallya was removed from the FMSCI honorary chairman's post.

Re: Vijay Mallya resigns as FMSCI representative to FIA

It will be quite a day when folks like him and Lalit Modi are brought to trial in India and kept in lock up like the Sahara chief was/is. Unfortunately the British have very clever laws that allow moneyed fraudsters on the run to find a haven there provided they have invested big bucks in the UK. That is why so many Russian oligarchs and business tycoons all over the world maintain a home in London. The damage this man caused to Indian aviation's reputation and cost of capital is hard to measure.

All the developments that we've seen from the time that Liberty Media - the new F1 management - has taken over show them as an extremely forward-thinking team that is pushing all the right buttons for the sport. It's no longer an 'old boy's club' and has gotten a lot more open & innovative. I'm wondering if this move was influenced by Liberty Media.

VM has been FMSCI's representative at the FIA for a very very long time. While Liberty Media is aligned to the FIA like the FMSCI, ASNs such as FMSCI are not necessarily aligned to Liberty Media. VM has almost no stake in the sport after his withdrawing from Force India as well.

Further, though we have a F1 facility, I don't think Liberty Media would be interested in conducting a F1 race in India till the Govt. of India is directly involved in the event. Given these, I don't see any reason to believe any link between Liberty Media and VM's resignation as FMSCI's representative.
